Elliot - for a girl?!

I've been thinking about this name for a while, and recently I've started to think it sounds really pretty for a girl. Am I alone in thinking this? We would probably go for something along the lines of Elliot Pearl/Elliot Grace.

Is this a stupid pregnancy induced idea?

There are so many fantastic girl's names out there, why the need to for people to keep wanting to use boy's names on their daughters?!

Oh and Elliott in Scrubs was so called named, as her father wanted a boy, she made that very clear in one of the earliest episodes. So yes, while she was a female, it was made clear that it's a boy's name!

I know there are some lovely girls names, but I just don't want to use an overly feminine name. Being a tomboy with an un-shortenable, girly name was not nice when I was younger!

It's a boys name!

DS1 is Elliot. He has gone through school with a few other male Elliots. I think it is a normal, usual, run of the mill name(obviously I love it too) but just lately we have had a few people comment on it being a really weird name![hhmm]

TheHAUNTEDHouseofMirth · 26/10/2012 20:41

I think it works really well and maybe it's time we stopped being so hung up on whether names are "girls' names" or boys' names". Why does it matter?

Natnat29 · 26/10/2012 20:45

Really like it not sure I'd be brave enough to use it though

Kelerina · 26/10/2012 21:39

I LOVE Elliot for a girl

MerseyMama · 26/10/2012 21:48

I love it , the little girl on "ouch sextuplets" is called Elliot

Good point, actually. A name's purpose is to identify a person/thing, not necessarily define their gender (or other characteristics like religion, hair colour etc). Perhaps it can even be an advantage (in terms of job searches)?

Cezella · 27/10/2012 01:39

My cousins daughter is called Eliot Rose (just the one l) - I love it

Startailoforangeandgold · 27/10/2012 01:43

It's a boys name to me and one I rather like.

Pudgy2011 · 27/10/2012 03:10

Love Elliot for a girl or a boy (was 2nd choice on our boy's list and still will be used if we have another).

I'm probably not very objective though, we were going to call DS Dylan if he was a girl and Emerson and Harper was both also on the girls names list!

Ignore what people say, people always Hmm at names they aren't sure about until they meet the baby. Then they just accept it. Nobody tells Cameron Diaz she's got a boy's name. Or Dylan Lauren...

Why do you want to use a boys' name when there is a much wider choice for girls than boys anyway? People before meeting her will assume she's male - it could be quite irritating/embarrassing I'd imagine.

There's Eleanor/Elinor, Ella, Eliza etc, etc if it's the 'elle' sound you like.

I think its a boys name, sorry, but I guess its quite feminine sounding with 'Elle' and even the ending is like 'Ette'?

Not feeling any love for Dylan or Cameron for a girl either, sorry! That would cause confusion.

How about something with lots of NN options if you're worried about overly girly names- Amelia, Elizabeth, can be Amy, Leah, Millie, Lizzie, Beth, etc

CzarChasm · 28/10/2012 09:18

I love Rowan for a girl (or boy). Also Sasha?

Kt8791 · 28/10/2012 10:19

Love this as a girls name, have just added to my short list! Elliot grace is lovely also like Ellie as a nn.

rezzle · 28/10/2012 12:55

Sasha's the kind of thing I'm after, not so much other 'El' names. It's tough, this naming lark.

My ds is Asher, and have seen this (spelt that way and also Asha for a girl.) Also have a friend with a dd called Levi.

rezzle · 28/10/2012 17:45

Asha is beautiful

I guess most folk do think its a boys name but don't let that put you off. It's actually pretty cute and will work into adulthood. We are living in times where so many kids have stupid names with idiotic spellings. I think you're good with Elliot though.

survivingautumn · 28/10/2012 20:23

They wouldn't bat an eyelid at a female Elliot in the US! Huge crossover of names - and increasingly so here too of course.

I think it's fine for a girl tbh.

BananaBubbles · 28/10/2012 20:36

I think it's a horrid name for a boy or a girl. It has an unpleasant sound.

You are never going to avoid the Ellie nn if you choose Elliot. It is just too obvious. Her little friends in school will be unstoppable even if you get adults to call her Elliot.

How about
Avery
Arden
Kendall
Drusilla (Dru)
Zion
Sybil
Noelle
Saskia
Natasha
Anoushka
Tess
Vita
Cleo
Carmen
Eden
Zoe
