What other names are like this? Wink

OP posts:

DD3 had a Jaela in class with her in the US. Her family was hispanic, trying to be more American then the previous generation. DS was in class with a Taylor (a girl). It's a name from the land where white met bread (i.e. anonymous American suburbia)

lljkk · 21/09/2012 08:01

Did she pronounce it the Spanish way, Hi-ELa? It almost sounds like a proper word in Spanish. That Mexican ball game, ?Jael? Can't quite recall proper name or find it on Google.

Around here all the so-called "Chav" names are quite popular among ordinary solid Naice families.
The actual local Chavs call their kids Sophie, James and Emily.

I think the OP is looking for people to say it's awful and suggestions on how to steer her friend away from it.

lljkk · 21/09/2012 11:21

That isn't what OP said . If a close British friend wanted to call her son Laurie or Ashley I might well mention that those are girl-only names stateside. It's not criticism, just information. One of my teenage friends has called his DD Morgan. If we were still close I would have directly told him it's a man's name in Britain so sounds odd to me on a girl. His choice to ignore, obviously.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/09/2012 11:23

That might have been how the thread started but it very quickly degenerated.

A lot of people like the name actually, so it's not a clear cut issue is it?

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/09/2012 11:24

You not saying Laurie that's a white trash chav name here and your kid will be judged and probably will never read apart from texts are you? Your just saying its not a girls name. Mahoosive difference.

lljkk · 21/09/2012 11:25

Don't think OP should be held responsible for it degenerating.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/09/2012 11:27

Who has specifically blamed her?

I haven't. Though she did jump on the bandwagon a little tiny bit by using a shameless reference.

If her friend read this she would stay in America!

jkklpu · 21/09/2012 12:55

Woodrow

SarryB · 21/09/2012 13:42

I'm actually a Thicko in Scotland, ta.

Mellower · 21/09/2012 14:02

Oh cool I finally get the point of the thread. Yeah it's fine girl/boy who cares, heard worse, maybe she can start a new trend, I'd rather be a Taylor than RL name tbh.

mathanxiety · 21/09/2012 15:06

No, it was pronounced Jay-la, J as in Jane.

Popularity of Jayla (pronounced the same) in the US here

That page shows an unscientific suggestion of other names in the US that are associated with Jayla (Jaela). Interestingly Taylor is among them (and Jayden, Jaidyn, Alyssa, Briella, Brandon.)

'If her friend read this she would stay in America!' where the same distinctions are made among names only different terms are used to refer to the equivalent of the C word.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/09/2012 16:27

American, British, whatever calling people chavs is still shitty!

Or what ever the us equivalent is. Guessing involves trailers.

TeaTimeAtTiffanys · 21/09/2012 16:47

My name is Taylor. I have yet to make an appearance on Jeremy Kyle, but I'm assuming it's only a matter of time? Hmm

I think some people really need to think before they post.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/09/2012 17:33

Hi Taylor!

What not even one session with graham?

Glad to hear you have managed to scrape together some form of normal life Grin

Can you read and everything?

TeaTimeAtTiffanys · 21/09/2012 21:57

It's been hard, Pickles, very hard indeed.

As for the reading thing, I'm working my way through the Magic Key series as we speak. It's nice and challenging, and I'm finding the storylines thrilling. Absolutely thrilling.

Mellower · 21/09/2012 23:43

Grin and Envy you have a cool name! Well imo anyway.... well done with Magic Key, I find those books enthralling and the adventures we go on etc ah fabtastic!!!

I am actually a bit pissed off my DC had now finished them Sad Even though I got to read then twice....Grin

FrontQuad · 22/09/2012 00:45

Posters are entitled to ask questions about names and others are entitled to respond whether they like them or not. That is why mnetters ask for honest opinions.

Similar names with the same imagery in this country would be: Lexy, Lexy-Mae, Kimberly, Brittany, Megan, Ashley, Ruby, Ruby-Mae, Lily-Mae, Chloe, Savannah, Page, Chelsea, Danielle, Maya, Mia, Poppy, Jodie, Jade, Bailey - many of these will have a myriad of spellings.

I can't think of a similar type of name to Taylor that I like. I'm sorry if that offends anyone. That name is one I would never, ever use. I'm sure that there are names that I like, that people who like these sort of names would detest too. Different groups of people like different names, it makes life all the more interesting.

lisaro · 22/09/2012 01:01

Frontsquad I agree totally apart from Danielle. It's a totally accepted, valid name. That apart, good post.

FrontQuad · 22/09/2012 01:36

I will remove Danielle from that list for you, Lisaro wink and will replace it with Darcy!

FrontQuad · 22/09/2012 01:37

that was meant to be a Wink

lisaro · 22/09/2012 01:55

Aww thank you front, may I be so forward? Much appreciated.

mathanxiety · 22/09/2012 02:13

'...what ever the us equivalent is. Guessing involves trailers.'

No, very, very bland suburbia.

sashh · 22/09/2012 04:10

Some of you are so rude and judgemental. Your DCs won't go far in life with such narrow minded parents. You think you're above everyone, when in fact you are just showing how thick and uneducated you are.

Judgemental = thick and uneducated. Er no it doesn't.
