What do yout think about Ellen and Elsie and which do you prefer? I like both but have rservations about both. Ellen - is it a tad boring compared to some names out there? Elsie - is it a bit over the top granny chic or pretentious?

Any other suggestions very welcome. We are looking for something that will stand the test of time.

I love Elsie, really pretty name, Ellen is nice just find it a bit plainer...

saffronwblue · 18/09/2012 10:50

Have you thought about Elsa? Or Ilse?

randomimposter · 18/09/2012 11:05

I like Eleanor over Ellen
and Elsa over Elsie...

Or Esme, Esther, Eliza are other lovely E names.

seeker · 18/09/2012 11:07

Ellen is lovely. Elsie a bit prissy and frilly for my taste.

Can I throw Edith into the mix?

AndWhenYouGetThere · 18/09/2012 11:33

Elsie is lovely. I love it just on it's own, but for the "test of time" aspect, she could be an Elsa, an Elise or even an Elizabeth.

antshouse · 18/09/2012 13:29

I have an Eleanor who has become an Ellie at school so I rather wish I'd chosen Elspeth instead.. and she'd probably be Elsie, but that is less common for her age group (teen).

LemonLovesLilac · 18/09/2012 13:35

Elsieis the one I would pick.....ellen is super boring!

seeker · 18/09/2012 13:37

How can a name be boring?

Ellen is rather staid. Elsie is nice as a nickname for Elspeth or Elisabeth.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 18/09/2012 17:24

Elsie.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 18/09/2012 17:24

Elsie.

sunnyday123 · 18/09/2012 17:34

Not a huge fan of either as both examples I know get Ellie which is very common these days! Would prefer Ellen though as more additional and less "trying to hard"!

sunnyday123 · 18/09/2012 17:35

Also ny nan was Ellen and got nelly her whole life which is a cool name!

EugenesAxe · 18/09/2012 17:43

Wasn't Ripley from Alien an Ellen? She's not exactly staid.

That said, the Ellen I know is in reality an Ellie. Just in case that influences you...

I think I vote Elsie, as I quite like olden-day-making-a-comeback names.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 18/09/2012 17:58

Elsie is a bit granny chic for me, sorry.

I don't like Ellen.

Elise?

minipie · 18/09/2012 19:01

I quite like Ellen actually. You could have Nell as a nn which I really like.

Elsie is too cutesy for me. Elsa is great though. Or Elise.

EverlongYouAreGoldAndOrange · 18/09/2012 19:17

Sorry don't like Elsie at all.

Ellen is ok. What about Esme?

StellaNova · 18/09/2012 19:21

I like Elsie very much. I think it can stand alone rather than being a nickname and I usually very much prefer the full name; but I think it has actually become a name in its own right, like Sally (previously nn for Sarah).

wildpoppy · 18/09/2012 19:31

I know a lovely adult Ellen which has given the name a new lease of life for me.

I'd go for Ellen with Elsie as a nickname.

MrsJohnDeere · 18/09/2012 20:01

Ellen. The ones I've known in RL have been lovely.

Elsie a bit too old lady for me.

CPtart · 18/09/2012 20:39

Prefer Ellen but there are so many Ellies and Ellas out there it may get lost in the mix.

wigglesrock · 18/09/2012 20:49

I love Ellen and know a really cool 10 year old one Grin I'm not a fan of Elsie at all, but like Elise.

BeaLola · 18/09/2012 21:55

I like Ellen but a Mum I know whose DD has this name always says she is fed up with people thinking she said "Helen" especially when arranging apointments over the phone.

I don't like Elsie that much.

Love Eleanor, Verity, Charlotte, Amelia, Louisa, Alicia

seeker · 19/09/2012 09:05

Edith?
