what if you dont like any names?

I am 33 weeks pregnant and we dont have a single name we like. With DD I had both choices already picked by now.

We look at name lists and talk about names, but just cannot find any. We have quite similar taste so I suppose thats good.

Some names we like a bit are Erin for a girl and Dylan, Daniel and Olly for a boy.

A girl called Erin was horrible to DD where we used to live. So thats out. I hate the nn Danny so I dont know if I would call a boy Daniel. Dylan I loved but have completely went off. And Olly divides us. I prefer the spelling Ollie. DP hates it. And we cant decide whether to put Oliver on the BC.

:(

Any advice?

I really like Erin! Names that remind me of Erin (or sort of seem similar for some reason!) are Imogen and Megan. Also love Florence.

Out of the three boys name my fave is Ollie. Or you could have Oliver which is really nice and then see if a nickname evolves?

As Erin is welsh, and Dylan is Irish, perhaps look at names list from those countries?

Whats your DD's name?

Chainoffools · 16/09/2012 16:16

If you don't like any names, how about naming the child after someone important to you?

seeker · 16/09/2012 16:20

If you don't like any names at all, I would think it's because you're flooded witht he same hormone that makes other people call their child something like Wainscott or Sarsparilla, so I would wait until after the baby's born and you'll be thinking more clearly, and the perfect name will just be obvious when you look at the baby.

Viviennemary · 16/09/2012 16:22

I like a lot of names. Think of the kind of names you like and the kind you don't like. Do you like flower names. I do. Violet Iris are both nice. Not that mad about Erin but look at other Irish names. And welsh ones. Or even Scottish names. Catriona. Boys names are more difficult I always think. I don't like as many of them.

Davinaaddict · 16/09/2012 16:23

We didn't have names for either of our two before they were born. It took us 2 days to name DS and a day to name DD. We didn't really feel it was appropriate to name our babies until we'd met them. Having said that I also appreciate others like to have decided on a name beforehand. Smile

Would you consider waiting until after your baby arrives before naming? You might find a name that is just perfect when you meet him/her, but that you've discounted or never thought of Grin

Ellen and Oscar. Done.

I love Oliver but DP only likes Olly.

DP likes Eleanor, which is my GMs name. But to me it seems a bit fuddy duddy. Dont like Ella or Ellie as they have family connections.

I have a Charlotte already.

I like Florence and Imogen. Will mention them to DP.

There are a lot of names which sound lovely, but dont seem very "us" if that makes sense.

The surname ends in y so y ending names dont always go. Olly gets another strike :(

Dylan is actually Welsh - my son's name so I love it!

We really struggled with names, especially for our 4th and last as we felt we'd used up all our name options by then. We ended up choosing a name that was our second choice previously, as it was the only name we liked enough to consider using, and we've now come to love it as much as the other names.

Maybe look at names you've liked in the past and see if you can "feel the love" again?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:29

When DD was born I took two weeks to name her definately. So I dont need absolute definites, more just a rough shortlist. At the minute we have nothing.

:o seeker. I always wondered what possesses people sometimes...now I get it!

Why don't you wait til your baby is born. And then you'll get an idea of what suits them once you've seen them. You've got I think 6 weeks to register the birth, and come up with a name anyway.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:31

Dylan was my choice if DD had been a boy Saskia :) I really did love it so much. I cant explain why I have gone off it.

saskia87 · 16/09/2012 16:39

I think sometimes you just get a bit bored of liking the same names! When my DD1 was born, our second choice had been Phoebe - which we've just named DD2. When pregnant with DD2 I wasn't sure about Phoebe as it just felt like I'd liked it for too long, and that I might be missing out on a better name (although never found one).

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:46

You could be right saskia.

When I was pregnant with DD I was convinced I was having a boy. I had dreams about a little blonde haired Dylan. That was 4 years ago now! Maybe its just too familiar now.

I think I will know better when we meet him/her. But it would be nice to have a bit of an idea. I dont really want two weeks of calling it baby again :o

Easy then for boys, say to DH yes to Olly, but as it's a nickname, you'll put Oliver on the birthcertificate as Olly doesn't really work for some jobs and it gives him the option when he grows up. Then announce the birth of little Oliver. Sorted.

DontmindifIdo · 16/09/2012 16:54

I also think Dylan is lovely.

I think the suggestion of Imogen works really well with Charlotte.

YesIKnowILookHugeThanks · 16/09/2012 16:54

Eleanor is a million miles from fuddy duddy - and yes I have got one. It's elegant, classic, strong and pretty all at the same time. It also has a lovely family connection for you, so I'd say job done - Eleanor it is.

Daniel is a nice boys name, more likely to be nn Dan than Danny these days I would think. If you like Daniel you might like Matthew, Nicholas, Andrew, Michael. Or how about something like Reuben, Rafferty, Gabriel, Owen, Oscar, Fintan?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 16:58

Does anyone have an Imogen? Or know of any possible nicknames which could come about?

DP likes Imogen!

OP posts:
hoppityhoppity · 16/09/2012 17:02

Imo?
Ginny?
I think Imogen is a lovely name

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 17:05

Its hard to explain with the Eleanor thing. DP likes it because its after a car and I like it too. But its not as popular here as in other areas and I guess I associate it with my granny.

Charlotte is an old name so Im not adverse to old names (and Charlotte was unusual around here 4 years ago) but Eleanor seems to unlike us.

I dont mean to offend anyone who has used it. It is a lovely name.

OP posts:
wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 17:08

DP likes Oscar.

Matthew very common around here. Owen is an ex.

Its hard to find names we dont already have associations with.

Oh and the girls middle name choice is Louise.

wokeupandsmeltthecoffee · 16/09/2012 17:11

My dd is Erin and I love it. It means Ireland. Second choice was Niamh but (now ex) dp couldn't comprehend the spelling. For a boy it was going to be Ethan but I've gone off that now.

Snog · 16/09/2012 17:25

Let Charlotte choose or choose an old family name?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/09/2012 17:29

:o Snog. If I ask her what names she likes she makes a series of sounds. There hasnt been a serious name yet. Shes 3.9 and can speak well. She just doesnt really get it.

MrsJohnDeere · 16/09/2012 17:47

We felt like this with ds2. We nearly called him Thomas because it was the only name that we both thought was OK, even though neither of us were that keen. Everything else one or other hated!

But you can over think these things. The right name will suddenly pop into your head at some point, possibly not until after the birth.

SugarMeFingers · 16/09/2012 18:41

I have an Imogen, she has loads of nns, here's a few- Imy, Midge, Moo, Mimi and Little legs!
It's a great name!
My other daughter has Aeryn as a middle name, said the same as Erin but i preferred this spelling.
Good luck choosing!
