Does anyone have an Albert, Ernest or an Arthur?

If so, can you let me know what other names were on your list and also what nicknames you use.

I love these three names for a possible DS2 but they seem to receive a slating on these boards, particularly Ernest. I am surprised people dislike Ernest so much because I honestly, hand on heart, think it's lovely.

I just want to get a better feel for whether I am living in a little bubble when I am considering these names for any DS2.

I don't, but know people who do. Ernest gets shortened to Ernie. Albert is not shortened at all but you could have Bertie or Albie. I know an Arthur that again isn't shortened but you could have Artie?

Other similar names:

Stanley (Stan)
Bertram (Bertie)
Hugo
Edmund
Percy
Jolyon (Jolly)

Sure some others will have better suggestions!

TudorJess · 05/09/2012 09:31

How about Alfred, Edwin, Sidney, George, James, Frederick, Charles, Thomas, Henry?

emmyloo2 · 05/09/2012 09:40

Thanks for the suggestions. James and Thomas are nice but a little bland and popular for me.

I do love Henry but again I think it might be becoming popular?

Loving Edmund, Hugo and Frederick! Hugo was on our list for DS1.

I love all 3 of your names Albert, Ernest and Arthur and I also love any nn's for them. Good choices!

Happilymarried155 · 05/09/2012 18:25

Love Ernest!!! Really good solid name!

bigkidsdidit · 05/09/2012 18:28

I have an Albert, we call him Bertie mostly but also bert, Alberto, bertolli Blush all his formal things / name tags say Albert

Also on our list were Edward (Ted), Josiah and George

toysoldiers · 05/09/2012 18:32

I have an Arthur Albert and my second choice was Ernest Grin

There weren't really any others on the list but I like
Wilfred
Henry (Hal)
Arlo
George
Eric
Fred

Not keen on Stanley for some reason.

toysoldiers · 05/09/2012 18:34

As for nicknames - I don't do them Grin

Arthur is Arthur - maybe one day he'll call himself Artie but not on my watch!

toysoldiers · 05/09/2012 18:34

Or maybe he'll go with 'Thor' Wink

happierhigherstrongerwheezing · 05/09/2012 18:36

All good names.
I have an Edward Arthur and have a Hugo
I liked bertie for Ds2.

Littlecherublegs · 06/09/2012 17:58

I know of an Albert - it doesnt get shortened at all.
His middle name is Ernest!

Also know of an Arthur, again it doesnt get shortened. He has brothers called Frank and George.

Other suggestions:
Charles
Theodore
Alfred
Freddie
Wilfred / Wilbur
Abe
Barnaby
Ezra
Roland / Ronald
Victor

I love Albert, Ernest and Arthur, all three of them! Lots! I can't see anything wrong with any of them. They are slightly old fashioned but these things always go in cycles. They all have the option of being shortened but I like the full names and Albie, Bertie, Ernie and Art too. If you like them go with one of them. You'll never find names that please everyone. The only Arthur I know is a delightful little boy.

LeBeauReve · 07/09/2012 22:09

What is with people on here wanting to saddle their child with a name that they will hate once they hit puberty??
I promise you there is no teenage boy who wants to be called Ernest or Ernie.

At least choose something that can be shortened to a relatively normal nickname, not something that conjures up images of a weedy old man.

Alfred (Alfie)
Frederick (Freddie)
Edmund (Ed)

Also love Ezra and Hugo.

herethereandeverywhere · 07/09/2012 23:23

Love all 3 names.

I know a little Arthur (Arty) with a brother Edward (Woody) and an Albert (Albie) with a brother Wilfred (Wilf).

Oh and my great uncle Ernest had a brother called Stanley Smile

Clary · 08/09/2012 00:40

I like all those names. I don't know many so can't help on nns. The only Arthur I know well is always Arthur.

I also like Sidney, Stanley, Edward, Edwin, George, Frederick, Henry, Alfred. Oh yes and Rolandbut I truly was a lone voice on that one Grin

Clary · 08/09/2012 00:42

To clarify: I like the name Roland not Rolandbut - that would just be silly.

Ihatepeas · 09/09/2012 14:16

Love love love these names!!! I know a few little Arthur's..all just get called Arthur but it is totally gorgeous just as it is doesn't need shortening! Don't know any Alberts or Ernest's but both are on my list for Dc due in 8 weeks!!

Diamond7 · 09/09/2012 17:37

I love these names.

Albert can be Albie, Burt, Bertie or Al.

A friend has an Ernest. Think it is a lovely name. He goes be Ernie.

These names will divide but there is nothing wrong with that.

Love Arthur but getting popular. We might use it as a middle name.

Godalmightynotagain · 09/09/2012 23:00

Arthur's lovely but we could never use it as around here it would be pronounced 'Arfur' and that would drive me up the wall Grin

Leftwingharpie · 11/09/2012 07:26

Arthur's my favourite of the three. The other two make me think of Sesame Street. Either one on its own probably wouldn't.

MadBusLady · 11/09/2012 08:22

I love Albert! I'm not sure about using it though because it happens to be a portmanteau of my and DP's names if you see what I mean, and people might think we had done it on purpose. Grin

lou4791 · 11/09/2012 19:21

I have an Arthur. I was slightly nervous about using it as it seemed an unusual choice at the time- but I loved it. So glad I was brave enough now and didn't worry that it may not be to other peoples taste. His nickname is Bear ( Arthur means 'bear'). Not keen on Art or Artie though.

lou4791 · 11/09/2012 19:23

Oh and other names on our boy list were- Joseph, Heath ,Leo ,Louis, Henry, James and Dominic.

LotsofDots · 11/09/2012 19:26

Love all 3. DD2 would have been Arthur had she been a DS. I knew an Albert at university, he was known as Ally. I didn't know his real name for months, I assumed it was Alistair. Ernest is lovely, and I would frankly encourage any Oscar Wilde related hand bag jokes, very important!

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSky · 11/09/2012 19:28

I have an Arthur and a Wilfrid (and Lou our Arthur is known as Bear too Grin) both of them named after family members and am now horribly worried about how popular they're becoming! Arthur never gets shortened, Wilfrid is Wilf or Wilfie as was the grandpa he was named after.
We also liked Albert, Frederick, Mylo, Monty and a few others but TBH I always knew what my boys would be called and DH had no say in it at all!
