Seren... I know it's popular but is it chavvy?

I'm about to have DD2 and was planning in calling her Seren. I'm English but we live in South Wales and I've loved this name since moving here 3 years ago.

I love the name but don't want to lumber her with a name that is the current equivalent of Sharon or Tracey in England!

So Seren... Just popular or popular AND common?

No,it's a great name. Up and coming, I would say, rather than popular.

Isn't it scandinavian?
I haven't heard it being associated with chavvishness at all

FelicitywasSarca · 03/09/2012 16:14

Not chavvy/common at all.

TudorJess · 03/09/2012 16:17

Hadn't thought of it as chavvy but I do think it's getting faddy now.

GoByTrain · 03/09/2012 16:18

I love this name - but then someone on here said it sounded like a gypsy's name (if I remember rightly). Mind you, what's wrong with a gypsy's name?

Anyhow, back to topic: it is sooo hard to work out which names will be future Sharon/Tracey names - given that Sharon, at least, is an old Biblical and - were it not for the baggage - a rather beautiful name.

PS doesn't Seren means 'star' too? - which I also like.

iwantavuvezela · 03/09/2012 16:22

It's welsh for star ....

tanfastic · 03/09/2012 16:25

I know one Seren and the family is certainly not what I'd call chav. I love it.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/09/2012 16:32

Not chavvy IMHO.

Is it popular? I don't know any.....

mrsbugsywugsy · 03/09/2012 16:37

It's a lovely name. I only know one and she's my age.

greenhill · 03/09/2012 16:40

Have you watched Abadas on CBeebies? Seren is a singing bat and v cute.

Wafflenose · 03/09/2012 16:46

No, it's classy.

EMS23 · 03/09/2012 17:08

Phew, very glad to hear that! I'm 38.5 weeks pregnant & overheard a Welsh lady today saying she hated hearing mums screaming Seren everywhere now and chose not to call her daughter that because of it. The way she said it, sounded like she meant it was chavvy.
Seren it is then!

I love it :)
Very pretty.

Idlegirl83 · 03/09/2012 17:13

Like 'Seren'....but not so keen on 'Serengeti' which is the longer version of it, popular around here!

jumpingjackhash · 03/09/2012 17:18

Gorgeous name, stick with it, especially if you love it (don't worry what some other random stranger thinks)!

Wink You well?

Orchidskeepdying · 03/09/2012 17:20

My welsh friend says its chavvy. Its welsh for star... Would you call your child star? If you would then go for it.

EMS23 · 03/09/2012 17:43

Hi Jumping Wink!! Good thanks, DH feeding me curries and taking me on long walks to try and get the baby out before Friday!! You ok?

jumpingjackhash · 03/09/2012 17:46

I'll bet he is! My DH is also willing little Seren along (as are the rest of the blues...)! Grin

All good Smile

storytopper · 03/09/2012 17:47

Beautiful name. Never heard it before - I'm in Scotland.

Nahla321 · 03/09/2012 18:05

I like it. I've heard a few Serenity's around here lately were i live but i think Seren is a much nicer shortened version. Never heard of Seren before though, its lovely. I would use it if i were you :)

thegreylady · 03/09/2012 18:08

My cousin's dd called her little girl Seren-I think it is beautiful. Her sister is Stella-they both mean star of course :)

Hullygully · 03/09/2012 18:09

Unless your surname is Dipity, I'd give it a miss.

jumpingjackhash · 03/09/2012 18:10

I have an older relative called Stella and if I ever have a DD I'd love to call her that (but it would cause all sorts of family squabbles along the lines of 'naming after her, not me...'! Grin)

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 03/09/2012 18:13

I've never heard it before, think it sounds lovely. I also like the Irish for star- realt, and the name that follows, realtin, meaning little star :)

SoupDragon · 03/09/2012 18:24

Like 'Seren'....but not so keen on 'Serengeti' which is the longer version of it, popular around here!

Eh??

Takver · 03/09/2012 18:45

Around here (west Wales) I'd say it was mainly popular with slightly hippyish non Welsh speaking incomers - probably because of the meaning. Doesn't stop it being a pretty name, though :)
