Seren... I know it's popular but is it chavvy?

I'm about to have DD2 and was planning in calling her Seren. I'm English but we live in South Wales and I've loved this name since moving here 3 years ago.

I love the name but don't want to lumber her with a name that is the current equivalent of Sharon or Tracey in England!

So Seren... Just popular or popular AND common?

Should say that I am also a slightly hippyish non Welsh speaking incomer which may be why I like the name Grin

Just want to add my tuppence worth - as a paediatric nurse I definitely notice trends in the names of our clientele, and I've yet to encounter a Seren of any age (I'm in East Anglia, so maybe it's just not caught on here yet?).

Bailey-Rae, Noah, Kayden & Zion, on the other hand...

South West Wales here and it's as Takver says, pretty popular and slightly alternative. While the name means star, i dont think its quite the same as calling a child star iyswim? My niece is a Seren and she is a nice girl from a good home

Pinkflipflop · 03/09/2012 19:08

I think it's lovely! I have only ever heard tthe name on here and don't know anyone in RL with the name Seren!

EMS23 · 03/09/2012 19:12

I wouldn't say we're slightly hippyish but we are non Welsh speaking incomers so fit the bill on that score!

I do feel it's not the same as calling her Star, which feels very hippy to me. But I'm also half Italian so wouldn't use Stella. Maybe it's because Seren is a name here that it seems different to me.

If the 20 week scan was wrong and it's a boy I want to call him Taliesin which is so so Welsh, I'm sure I'll get a few raised eyebrows!!

I know 4 little Serens all under the age of two and an older one who is about 7. Must be popular in my area.

MrsBovary · 03/09/2012 20:24

No, I wouldn't have thought so. Slightly popular perhaps.

Stellan · 03/09/2012 20:27

It is the sixth most popular name in Wales. For that reason, I would avoid it unless you really love it.

Beautiful name so go for it! I know a few small Serens, all under five years old. far from chavvy, just becoming a wee but more popular, but so what. if you love a name, go for it. there will only ever be one important Seren, your Seren!

QuickQuickSloe · 03/09/2012 22:40

I LOVE Taliesin Envy DH vetoed it for our DS.

carrielou2007 · 03/09/2012 23:02

Lots of Seren's here, beautiful name and Serena to an Italian family. Every time I my dc's sing along with Seren, Harry and Ella in 'dab dabs' as they call them I think it's a very pretty name Smile

hellymelly · 03/09/2012 23:10

I'm also in West Wales and agree it is popular with non-welsh speaking incomers (slightly hippy in persuasion). It wasn't generally used as name in Wales until pretty recently.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2012 07:00

I have a Seren. We are in England though and it is still very uncommon indeed :)

bobbledunk · 04/09/2012 23:27

Pretty and classy imo but I suppose that perception depends on where you live.
