LOVE the name Juliet hate what it can be shortened too. DC2 due shortly and just cannot decide on a girls name I love. Anyone with a Juliet out there that does not have it shortened or would I be fighting a losing battle?

Ah, I've been wondering the same! I love Juliet and also Juliana but really don't like Julie or Jules either. I actually know a Juliana who is, as far as I know, always Juliana, so I asked her about it and she said she does get Julie sometimes but never Jules. I'm not sure that made me feel any better! I think you can try to a certain extent not to get it shortened but at some point it just will be. My name is a classic of that too - Eleanor, but I've never really liked Ellie, and yet half my friends call me Ellie, just can't do anything about it so I've learned to accept it!

It does put me off Juliet / Juliana, it's such a shame :( Would be interested to see if anyone else has any more helpful comments on this matter.....

BuntCadger · 01/09/2012 12:09

I've a 3 grown up friends, sll are Juliet or Julie

BuntCadger · 01/09/2012 12:09

And Julie is her full name. Never shortened, the other 2 are Juliet and also not shortened

squoosh · 01/09/2012 12:13

Well there will be some people in their lives who'll call them Jules but that doesn't mean you need to.

steben · 01/09/2012 12:28

This is true sqoosh! Glad others feel the same it is def on my shortlist if it is a girl...

I think Julie is really pretty anyway (probably because I live in a French-speaking country :)). But why would Juliet be shortened to Julie, it's not that much shorter is it?

Some people are bound to call her Jules, but it won't stick unless she adopts it herself and starts signing herself Jules... will it?

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 01/09/2012 16:29

I know 2 Juliets and neither have had their name shortened. One is late 30s and the other late 40s/early 50s

CharlieCoCo · 01/09/2012 23:04

Im really into Juliet lately, its beautiful in its own right. if you want a nn for her, how about jule (as in Jewel). not as bad a jools which i dont like personally and jewel sounds pretty

lljkk · 02/09/2012 09:13

Don't choose it if you can't stand the obvious NNs.

BeckAndCall · 02/09/2012 09:15

I know three Juliets - one 60, one 20 one a teenager and they always are referred to by their full name - I guess it's about how you introduce yourself throughout your life?

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 02/09/2012 09:23

I'm Julie and never shortened to Jules, can't see why Juliet would be.
It is a beautiful name biased

MyPetMonsterAndMe · 02/09/2012 16:32

I've taught 2 teenagers named Juliet and neither have had their names shortened. I'm a Julia and have never been anything other than Julia (except to my mother who calls me Jules occasionally but I like it)

You can't guarantee it - but I do know two Juliet's called Juliet. I was Frances, never Fran but that's just because I personally hate Fran.

We loves Juliet but hated Jules too, and on the flipside love Maggie but hate longer variations, so DD is Maggie Juliet

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 02/09/2012 16:39

I am Julia and it is never shortened except by one uncle! As he is a nice uncle it is allowed!

Hassled · 02/09/2012 16:44

I think if the family doesn't ever shorten a name and so the child never thinks to shorten the name, it just doesn't ever get shortened, IYSWIM. One of my DSs has a very obvious shorter version of his name which is in common use, but we've always resisted and it's never been an issue - no-one calls him by the shorter version. You'll be safe with Juliet and it's a lovely name.

confuddledDOTcom · 02/09/2012 16:52

My daughter has a name with a horrible shortening, but she has always been known by her name in full, people get told when they shorten her name (by her usually) and in general we've not really had anyone do it. I know an Eleanor who was about 3 when someone called her Ellie, she climbed on this lady's lap, held her face and said "El-an-or"! I was so proud of her Grin

Arabellasmella · 02/09/2012 18:44

I know a couple of Julias and they are not shortened. My favourite person is Julie and she is Jools and that is perfect imo

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 02/09/2012 18:50

I think Jools is the most ridiculous and awful shortening of a pretty name I have heard of.

I refuse to call Jamie Oliver's wife Jools on principle. Not that she knows or cares. She is called Juliette! Use that perfectly nice name! Jools. I ask you.

0lympia · 02/09/2012 19:00

yeah i hate jools too but I really like Juliet. I know two Juliets, one adult and one child and they are both Juliet not Joolz.

confuddledDOTcom · 02/09/2012 19:36

Do you all feel the same about Jools as a mans name? Julian Holland for example.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 02/09/2012 19:36

I refuse to countenance Jools as a name for man, woman or dog.

confuddledDOTcom · 02/09/2012 19:38

Oh dear, I had a mouthful of Pepsi then!

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 02/09/2012 19:40
Grin

As a name it is up there with Jonty, Cuthbert, Evie and Ethel as names which shouldn't darken people's doors.

Shoshe · 02/09/2012 19:49

I think in the end it will be the decision of the child as she gets older if her name is shortened.

I have a DN known as Jules, because actually she prefers it (she is in her early 20's now) her Mum still calls her Juliette tho Grin

Different ame but my Mum was Margaret and always Margaret none of this shortening for her Grin she hated her name but disliked the diminutives even more
