Romana?

First post! Grin

What do you folks think of Romana Olympia, or Romana Xanthe for a girl? I like the idea of Olympia because we discovered she was a girl whilst the first event of the Olympics was being staged a few miles away. Romana is because we are both keen on Latin and Roman history. Xanthe is a name we just like for the heck of it.

Is Romana really the best you can do with a love of Latin though? All it makes me think of is Romany gypsies, and tbh I think Olympia is a bit overkill with that as a first name. Xanthe Olympia is fine.

RancerDoo · 31/08/2012 20:53

Hm, not all that keen on Romana. I dont know why. It's my SILs name and she is v nice!

Loads of nice Roman names too... I love Aurelia and wish I could use it.

Stellan · 31/08/2012 20:55

I don't really like Romana although I like Roman for a boy. Romola or Romilly are far prettier choices, in my opinion, but there are also plenty of lovely Roman names you could use instead such as Aurelia and Serena.

Welshguy · 31/08/2012 20:55

I must confess, I was swayed by the Doctor Who connection with Romana, too. (ducks and hides...)

I like plenty of proper names, but Romana implies "of Rome", and you don't get more Roman than that!

Ok if your second name is Pizza.

PopcornCity · 31/08/2012 21:04

Dr Who (so quite 70s retro cool!)

Romana Xanthe is very pretty and unusual.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 31/08/2012 21:05

I was going to say it made me think of Doctor Who. I like it.

StormGlass · 31/08/2012 22:47

I thought of Doctor Who as well Smile

drcrab · 31/08/2012 22:49

I know a French girl called Romane ...

Sossiges · 31/08/2012 22:50

I know a Romana, she is lovely so I like it Smile

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 31/08/2012 22:51

Romy?

Sossiges · 31/08/2012 22:52

Don't think it goes with Olympia though because of the double vowel thing in the middle

mummabug · 31/08/2012 22:54

I love the name Romy :)

HoopDePoop · 31/08/2012 22:55

I thought of pizza too, sorry.

Mmm, pizza

Doctor Who! It's probably my favourite girls' name; shame we can't use it because our surname starts with an 'R'.

0lympia · 31/08/2012 23:11

Romana is awful. Cross my palm with silver and I'll tell you how you're gonna die. I like ROMILLY though, and if you want that eau de gypsy vibe, then I love Zelda!

Obviously though, Olympia is a great name! my friend had a baby during the Olympics and I heavily suggested the name Olympia to her but Confused she didn't use it!

NarkedRaspberry · 01/09/2012 00:37

Bad name.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 01/09/2012 00:48

It sounds like the Lady GaGa lyric. Bad Romance is it?

nooka · 01/09/2012 03:45

Romana to me is Dr Who, dh would be very approving (and both Romanas were very cool, so I think it is an excellent connection) I don't like the middle names too much though, I think two very unusual names is a bit much, I'd go for something more mainstream in case she finds Romana difficult to carry. Romana Olympia is a bit of a mouthful too!

Badgerina · 01/09/2012 08:29

I like Roman, for a girl. In fact, I know one. Better than Romana IMO.

Yika · 01/09/2012 16:36

Romane is beautiful and not at all unusual in France.

Roman is a boy's name to me.

I also quite like Romana. Romana Olympia is lovely. Have you also thought about Ramona? (A bit of a pointless suggestion if you want to refer to Rome however :)).

Badgerina · 02/09/2012 18:38

Yika how do they pn Romane in France? The one I know is French and may well spell it Romane (not sure). But she says it: Roman.

drcrab · 02/09/2012 18:50

They spell Romane with an E. but pronounced as seen Row- marn.

Yika · 02/09/2012 19:51

Yes with the emphasis on the second syllable.
