Which do you prefer, Tessa (with nickname Tess) or Lana? I'm interested to know what you think of when you hear either of these names, what impression do they give out (if that makes sense)? Trying to finalise name for dd....

Tessa/Tess would be interchangeable nn for Therese or Theresa, and as such is fine. I's a capable, go anywhere, sort of name.

Lana doesn't do it for me, sorry; bit out-dated film star, a rather pedestrian kind of name.

CakeBump · 25/08/2012 08:55

I like Tessa/Tess too.

To me its a sort of country, capable name. A horsey girl sort of a name.

Lana is a bit trendy I think...

cece · 25/08/2012 08:59

Lana - old lady

Tess - glamorous - goes out clubbing a lot (or maybe that is kust my friend...)

tara0202 · 25/08/2012 09:02

I much prefer Lana. Not a fan of tess at all (even though my lovely step gran was tessie - short for theresa).

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/08/2012 09:02

Tess for me.

The main reason behind not chosing Lana is because in Friends, Joey laughs at Phoebe when she says she has a friend called Lana Titwilder Blush

WhitePony · 25/08/2012 11:08

I like Tessa/Tess: Tess is a very cute NN that will age well.

Lana is okay, but I personally prefer Lena (pronounced lay-na). Lara is okay, too, but I much prefer good old-fashioned Laura.

lljkk · 25/08/2012 11:09

Tessa/Tess. Laura is nice, too.

manhattansunset · 25/08/2012 11:15

I love Lana! - it would be on our list but is too similar to our other daughter. It's glamorous, feminine, elegant. If a bit diva-ish.. but that wouldn't put me off. Lana del Rey comes to mind, and I would wonder a bit if she would spark a name trend like Rihanna did? Overall I would use it though.. Lana goes with names like Ava, kind of old school.

Tessa is a nickname already! I like it as well, quite sassy. Although the full name is a bit too angelic for me (Theresa)

LemonBreeland · 25/08/2012 11:18

Sorry but they are both kind of dog names to me. And Tess just makes me think two ton tess.

WithACherryOnTop · 25/08/2012 11:57

Tessa by far.

MrsBovary · 25/08/2012 13:03

I prefer Theresa or Teresa for Tess.

Lana is ok, though reversed it isn't great, as many usually point out.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/08/2012 14:12

Tessa/Tess. Gorgeous.

GnocchiNineDoors · 25/08/2012 14:14

oh, and I would go for Tess as it is, rather than having a longer name on the BC.

lalaloopylou · 25/08/2012 14:24

I prefer lana , it's my nieces name and I don't think it sounds boring at all

Wildwaterfalls · 25/08/2012 16:23

I like them both. Probably prefer Tess or Tessa as it is more versatile in my mind: Tess(a) could be elegant, strong, friendly, bouncy, a bit shy etc etc.

Lana sounds very elegant but might not suit as well if she ends up being quite a different type of person, iyswim

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 25/08/2012 16:24

Tess by a million miles!

NoComet · 25/08/2012 16:26

Never heard of Lana?

Teresa is lovely, with lots of NN.

mathanxiety · 25/08/2012 16:30

Tess/Tessa.
Two of DD3's friends are Tess and both are lovely girls -- there was a little bit of a popularity explosion near us 14 years ago it seems, but that's neither here nor there.

(Both Tessa/Tess and Lana are already nns)

DowntonOut · 25/08/2012 16:31

I like them both, and have a Lana Grin

CanoeSlalom · 25/08/2012 16:34

Tess, as nickname for Teresa.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 25/08/2012 16:34

Tessa/Tess really lovely.

Girlzone · 25/08/2012 17:12

Thanks for all your feedback - it helps to get views from people who are neutral, rather than family/friends... I'm not confident when making decisions but don't want to be swayed by the strong opinions of close family! I wasn't sure how Lana was perceived generally as a name, and I know Tessa isn't popular according to the national naming statistics, so your comments are helping me.

How about Layla or Lola instead of Lana............Sorry Tessa is a dog's name!

joanofarchitrave · 25/08/2012 22:38

Tess is fabulous.

Lana is a fabric to me

BerthaKitt · 25/08/2012 23:03

Lana is Spanish for wool.

You may find that irrelevant.
