Everyone hates my favourite girls name :-(

I have loved the name Aurelia for years and have always thought I would name my daughter it. Now I'm pregnant and I tell people potential names (I know, I know I shouldn't) I am getting not very positive reactions.

Apparently it's 'too bling', footballer's wife-esque, sounds like Israeli(?!), is chavvy and many more other interesting and varied but generally negative comments about it.

Should I ignore people and go for it (assuming baby is a girl!) or is it an ill-judged, ridiculous name? What do you mumsnetters think of it?

I thinks it's lovely :)

WhiteAnkleSocks · 09/08/2012 15:08

Your friends are ridiculous, it's not Israeli (wouldn't actually matter if it was) and my Aurelia has never had any comments like that. Some people look a bit Hmm but I don't really care. If you like it, go for it! It is Latin and much more common in Italy and France. We pronounce it the way the Italians do (Aur-ay-lee-a). I must say, I was unsure because it is really quite unusual over here, but I'm SO glad we went for it. It is perfect for our DD.

Good luck with the rest of your pg, and ignore the nay-sayers :)

itsjustmeanon · 09/08/2012 15:16

Aurelia is a beautiful name.

Pudgy2011 · 09/08/2012 22:22

Aurelia is gorgeous and was on our list, it's really pretty and not massively overused.

Having said that, had DS been a girl, he would have been called Dylan so perhaps I'm not the best person to give an opinion. Both DH and I loved it for a girl. We're weird like that apparently. DS's name isn't normal either.

Frikadellen · 09/08/2012 22:43

Its a beautiful name

jennylindinha · 09/08/2012 22:48

I love the name Aurelia! DD's middle name is from the smae root; Aurea (Oww-ree-a) which is the name of one of DP's relative's names (he is Brazilian) and I think it is beautiful. I also like Aurora.

Anyway, if you love it that is what counts Smile

Devora · 09/08/2012 22:50

It's pretty. You should go for it.

nearlymumofone · 09/08/2012 22:53

I like it. I mention names to other people in RL knowing that people won't all like my choice, and I'm pleased they don't! I don;t like their taste in lots of things either.

Don;t let others put you off. Good luck x

HaggisMcNeeps · 09/08/2012 23:27

It's lovely.

FuckityFuckFuck · 09/08/2012 23:28

Personally it's not for me, but my opinion really counts for nothing in the matter!

If you love the name, sod what everybody else thinks of it

livealoha · 09/08/2012 23:29

I think it's beautiful

NurseBernard · 10/08/2012 20:41

Beautiful name, and the Au-ray-lia pronounciation is a used and accepted one; certainly the one I'd default to. That's how the Portuguese girl in LA pronounced it.

Stop telling people your name choices!!!!! Wink

KatieTaylor · 10/08/2012 23:11

not keen on it. it's quite hard to say! awr rell ee ya. sounds like o really?

mathanxiety · 11/08/2012 06:46

Aurelia is a beautiful name imo (I would pronounce it Aw-REEL-ee-a). I know a couple of Polish Aurelias but I don't know if it's traditionally popular among Poles or just a coincidence.

zellyrox · 11/08/2012 08:36

Its a beautiful name!! when i was pregnant with dd1 i told everyone our name and received such a negative response, we almost waivered and came up with a different name towards the end. But thankfully we went back to the name when she was born and i am so pleased we did, it is a beautiful name and she couldnt be anything but an Izellah, and we love it which is all that matters

I like it; I don't find it chavvy.

Zephyrina or something, perhaps, but Aurelia isn't a made up name and is perfectly nice.

EugenesAxe · 11/08/2012 08:50

I also would say Ore-ray-leeah. Ree in the middle is just wrong!

bigkidsdidit · 11/08/2012 08:50

Gorgeous.

There was a wonderful gymnast in the 80s called Aurelia Dobre who i think of first. She was awe-ree-lee-a. I love it!

kefybaby · 11/08/2012 08:51

It's a sweet and beautiful name. Certainly not chavvy!

Its lovely! Ignore everyone and pick it! We have a very unusual girls name picked (if we ever get one!) and are not telling a soul about it for just this reason!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/08/2012 09:58

If you love it then choose it, they had their chance when they had their children.

The only person who didn't like my DDs name was my DM. Was really pleased as me and my DSister both have very common clunky sounding names. Her taste in names is shit Grin.

There are two places you should discuss your baby names, with your DP/DH and on MN!

FoxyRoxy · 12/08/2012 12:27

Aurelia is my most favourite girls name, it means golden. I'm expecting ds2 and I fear I'll never be able to use it :(

HiHowAreYou · 13/08/2012 08:22

I said it out loud and and it did sound a bit like "Oh really, ya".
Erm, just add my stupid comment to your friends'.

If you like it, and your DH, that's all that matters.
