Everyone hates my favourite girls name :-(

I have loved the name Aurelia for years and have always thought I would name my daughter it. Now I'm pregnant and I tell people potential names (I know, I know I shouldn't) I am getting not very positive reactions.

Apparently it's 'too bling', footballer's wife-esque, sounds like Israeli(?!), is chavvy and many more other interesting and varied but generally negative comments about it.

Should I ignore people and go for it (assuming baby is a girl!) or is it an ill-judged, ridiculous name? What do you mumsnetters think of it?

Another one who loves it here! I think it's a gorgeous name.

Sophisticatedknickers · 08/08/2012 09:24

It's a beautiful old Roman name so definitely not modern or chavvy IMO.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 08/08/2012 09:25

If you love it, you really should use it. You will regret not doing it.

HappyJustToBe · 08/08/2012 09:36

I like it. I'm another who automatically thought of Love Actually. Smile

twolittlebundles · 08/08/2012 09:50

Nearly named my DD1 Aurelia- still love it but it didn't seem to suit her. Go with what you like- you're the one who'll be using it most for the next few years!

VolAuVent · 08/08/2012 10:00

Lovely name :)

What's it got to do with footballers wives and bling? Confused

Viviennemary · 08/08/2012 10:56

It's really nice. It's a bit unusual I have to say. But I like it.

austenozzy · 08/08/2012 11:02

Pretty name - unusual and not at all chavvy.

In my head I pronounce the second syllable as ree not ray; is that incorrect?

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 08/08/2012 11:19

o-RAY-lee-ah

CecilyP · 08/08/2012 11:23

I think it's a lovely name but would pronounce it aureelia. While it won't be to everyone's taste, I think your friends' criticisms are frankly ridiculous.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 08/08/2012 11:50

I love it, whichever way you pronounce it.

As for those who don't like it, with the greatest of respect, fuck 'em. Grin

You love it and it's your child.

And congrats!

Ephiny · 08/08/2012 14:01

I like it. My only hesitation would be over whether 4 syllables is a little long, but it is a beautiful name.

You don't need anyone else's approval though. If you love it, use it.

MammaTonic · 08/08/2012 14:35

Aurelia isn't totally my cup of tea, but I do think it is a pretty name, even if it's not a name I'd choose for my own child.

If your baby is a girl, and you want to call her Aurelia, then do so! Fuck what other people think; you'll not find a name that pleases everyone, yet everyone has an opinion. What matters is that you and your DH/DP likes it, and that the child can live with it. Its not like you want to call her Sundance Fairy Pixie
(although I do quite like that! :) )

In terms on the connotational value of Aurelia, I think it sounds quite upmarket, unlike the 'chavvy' criticisms you've recieved. I also believe the name means 'golden' or something like that. Certainly a connection to gold, anyway.

Check it out on this site nameberry.com/ Its great.

Good luck,
MammaT

Sod what random non-parents of this soon to be born baby think.

Aurelia is fine, nothing wrong with it.

Weenugget · 08/08/2012 15:17

I really liked this name (because of love actually) until my hubbie kept
(deliberately) mispronouncing it areola! Now it's all I can tnk of when I hear it! He reckons other ppl would tnk of that too - I disagree!

Haribojoe · 08/08/2012 15:19

Love that name, was one that I wanted for DD but DH and DSs weren't keen Sad

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 08/08/2012 15:21

yes you really should't tell people, people never say anything nice about planned names! even if they're dead ordinary!

austenozzy · 08/08/2012 15:28

Thanks MT. I suppose the ree/ray thing probably comes from the French variant. A bit like Amélie/Amelia I suppose.

persephonejones · 08/08/2012 16:24

I love it. It's my sister's name and she is always called 'Auzzy'. I don't think it is chavvy at all. We have always pronounced it Au-reee-lia but I don't know if that's correct. It means 'daughter of the dawn'

Agree that it is the opposite of Chavvy!

HugeMedalTally · 08/08/2012 16:58

Okay, here's what you do. Choose an awful name. Nolene, for example. Tell everyone that is your choice. Do not budge.

When Aurelia comes along, everyone will be just so pleased she isn't Nolene. Wink

squoosh · 08/08/2012 17:39

Awwww you do know HugeMedal that Nolene or Nolene's Mum is going to be on here in a moment.

MayimBialik · 08/08/2012 17:45

Ah thanks everyone for the positive comments.

Ephiny it does seem like a long sounding names doesn't it but if you think about it it's no longer than Olivia, Amelia, Ophelia, Octavia etc
