Lyra? Pretentious?

I had loved the the name Lyra when pg with ds, obviously didn't get an opportunity to use it. Since then I've wondered whether it's a bit try hard or made up and pretentious. I have a very unusual name myself (which I have always loved) and if I have a dd would like to give her something that's not run of the mill, but don;t want it to look like I'm 'trying' to be different. Anyways, I'm due imminently and dh re-suggested this name today.. so opinions please....

Lovely name, not pretentious but I associate it with the character from the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.

if you want honesty..... It doesn't sound pretentious to me - just made up.
How about Lara?

MrsApplepants · 06/08/2012 22:18

Makes me think of Lycra. How about Lara instead?

MrsApplepants · 06/08/2012 22:19

X post!!

nearlymumofone · 06/08/2012 22:21

Tommy yes I like honesty- fire away!

I love Pullman, and the character- that's part of why I loved the name. I like Lara too, but I'm not sure it's enough?

Although I'm kind of thinking that simple names are more unusual these days1

Lyra is an older name than lara, it is a constellation. I think it's a great name. Makes me think of a wild and bold girl. Go for it.

Uppermid · 06/08/2012 22:26

Love it

nearlymumofone · 06/08/2012 22:26

I imagine if I were to have a dd she would be wild, bold and fiesty- I think the name could suit her.

Pretty-immediately think of Pullman. I quite like Pullman though, so that's fine :)

InvaderZim · 06/08/2012 22:31

Have run into some small Lyras. It's a fine name!

nearlymumofone · 06/08/2012 22:32

Invader Really? Is it quite popular/common then? I'm awaiting this national stats to check it out!

Beautiful name.....not at all pretentious! It's the name of Sophie Dahls daughter!

CloudRazor · 06/08/2012 23:09

Dd is Lyra so obviously I think it's a great name Grin
We've only met a few other Lyra's so it's not overly common.
HTH

yellowraincoat · 06/08/2012 23:11

You can't give her a name based on what you hope her personality will be like! That makes me feel sad in case she is quiet and shy :(

It makes me think of Italian lira.

Springforward · 06/08/2012 23:12

I like it, and Pullman's Lyra too.

HenriettaChicken · 06/08/2012 23:16

I like it but I don't think it's that unusual...I know of a few.

MarianForrester · 06/08/2012 23:18

I love it. And I think it would be good no matter what her personality. Lovely.

iloveACK · 06/08/2012 23:25

I think its lovely but does make me think Lycra or Lara, sorry!

UnrequitedSkink · 06/08/2012 23:26

Lovely.

ZenNudist · 06/08/2012 23:38

Not pretentious, quite nice actually. If you're going to take a fictional child as a namesake then at least Lyra Belacqua is a good choice. If you like it go for it.

TenthMuse · 07/08/2012 14:46

Not pretentious, particularly, but perhaps a bit celeb-trendy? Pretty, though.

squoosh · 07/08/2012 16:54

It's gaining in popularity I'd say. It fits in with Lila, Leila, Layla, Lily type names.

I immediately think of His Dark Materials too. Think Sophie Dahl's daughter is a Lyra

natsmum100 · 07/08/2012 18:30

How about Lyria?
