Lyra? Pretentious?

I had loved the the name Lyra when pg with ds, obviously didn't get an opportunity to use it. Since then I've wondered whether it's a bit try hard or made up and pretentious. I have a very unusual name myself (which I have always loved) and if I have a dd would like to give her something that's not run of the mill, but don;t want it to look like I'm 'trying' to be different. Anyways, I'm due imminently and dh re-suggested this name today.. so opinions please....

I liked it when pg with DD1 4 years ago, having read the Pullman books. I was worried it was a made up name, but now I know it is a constellation, I would definitely put it back in the box for a potential DD3 - go for it OP!

I think its beautiful

pommedechocolat · 08/08/2012 00:59

Lara more unusual then lyra I think!

nailak · 08/08/2012 01:43

pullman, in a good way

stowsettler · 08/08/2012 16:00

I really like it. It's elegant and unusual.

BonaDea · 08/08/2012 16:10

What's not to love about Pullman? Go for it.

nearlymumofone · 08/08/2012 19:44

Thanks for the responses. It's the only name myself and dh both agree on so is a definate contender.

yes I read that Sophie Dahl's daughter is called Lyra (when doing a bit of research on the name), not that there's anything wrong with Sophie Dahl, but I would HATE to have a celeb-type name. However her alone having a Lyra won't be enough to put me off.

Always be a boiled pixie to me I'm afraid. And too much like "liar".

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 08/08/2012 21:15

I think it's really nice. I know it's from the Pullman books, but I've never actually read them so don't know what she's like. It's a very pretty name.

I love it, makes me think of His Dark Materials. It was on my list, except my surname is Croft and it's a bit too similar to Lara to make that an option!

NoComet · 10/08/2012 10:19

As long as you and your DH aren't very shy and quiet.

The Lyra of the books is a fiesty character.

(the only painfully quiet DDs I know have lovely, but quiet parents).

Likewise why too lovely, out going, sporty parents ever thought Grace and Daisy were a good idea?

NoComet · 10/08/2012 10:19

Too-two????

If you love a name that's the main thing. If you scan down these threads you'll soon realise that there isn't a name in the world that everyone likes. Even close friends who you share lots of tastes with will call their children something that you would never consider.

Also, your dd will become that name, and you won't think she is pretentious.
My dd is called Iris, also chosen simply because DH and I think it is a lovely strong name (with a small amount of influence from Iris Murdoch!) Many people comment how much they like it as a name, but no doubt there are other that think it is pretentious. And, now I've met so many more children at playgrounds / nursery etc, I realise that there is a very wide range of names out there, especially calling a girl an unusual-ish name is really quite common! (For the record, I've only met one Lyra! I love the name too).

It's lovely. Was on my shortlist for dd but doesn't quite work in my parents' language so didn't go for it.
