Feel like our choice of girls name has been ruined but DP says not to worry

Really concerned about what to do. I am expecting my 1st child in a month or so and we are team yellow. After lots of discussions we agreed on a girls and boys name.
Now the girls name we chose was Aurora - for a number of reasons both to do with our relationship and family. Thinking of the northern lights etc.
Anyway after the tragic shooting in the US I feel torn and its really upsetting me (probably a bit to do with hormones).
DP says not to worry and that in a month or so no one will think of it but I worry that some people will associate it or if it is a girl she will one day look back and think her name was inspired by something horrible.
I feel selfish thinking about this when people tragically lost their lives.

what do you think?

Ok, holding my breath typing this in case I'm a horrrible person. I'm guessing, by your post, that Aurora was the name of the little girl killed in that horrific shooting in America. I've read and seen lots about that, including a couple of long interviews with the little girls Dad. But I, already, could not remember the name, as indicated by the fact that I had to guess what you are talking about.

What I'm trying to say is that you will have noticed the name more because you were considering it as an option. I didn't. I think it's a beautiful name and your DP is right. If you love it, go for it

KickTheGuru · 26/07/2012 18:12

I think it may concern you more that others.

Would you remember the shooting if you name your child that? If not, go for it.

Don't change for other people though :)

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 26/07/2012 18:12

Aurora is the place, not the wee bairns name.

In all honesty, most people think of it as Denver anyway & people have very short memories. There was a thread about this name the other day (I presume it wasn't yours??) and the overwhelming concensus was to use it if you liked it as very very few people would link the two, lots of people (myself incuded) said their first thought was the Disney Princess... which is something that may or may not bother you!

PorkyandBess · 26/07/2012 18:13

I wouldn't make an association, in fact I don't know what the connection is with the cinema shooting.

patosullivan · 26/07/2012 18:14

There's already been a thread about this - see link below -

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/1524275-If-I-call-her-Aurora-would-it-just-make-you-think-of-this-weeks-tragedy?pg=1

Most people thought Disney princess or northern lights. Most people did not associate it with the US shooting - remember that a lot of the UK coverage was referring to it as the Denver Batman shooting, not the Aurora shooting.

I don't think you need to worry about it.

Frontpaw · 26/07/2012 18:14

Its a lovely name, and I don't think people will associate it because it is a 'person' name too (so not like calling little one Columbine).

Aurora is the name of the town where it took place.

I don't think in the UK many people will associate the name with the shooting but if it always reminds you, then I'd probably pick something different.

A friend of mine had a little girl a few months after Madeleine McCann went missing & although she acknowledged associations with the name, she had pre-chosen it & stuck with it. They're fine with it, but I have to confess, when I hear the name Madeleine, I automatically think McCann rather than my friends little girl (unless she's the one talking obviously).

It is a lovely name though.

Frontpaw · 26/07/2012 18:15

Was it a Disney Princess too? I did not know that!

kilmuir · 26/07/2012 18:16

Lovely name. If it has a special meaning for you and DP then go with it

HecateHarshPants · 26/07/2012 18:17

Sadly - your husband is right. Most people will not remember the name or make the connection.

SilkySmith · 26/07/2012 18:19

I wouldn't have made the connection, I'm sure there's probably been victims of various things who've shared my name too, and now I think of it there's been a natural disaster with the same name as my middle name but before this thread I never thought about it

JustFabulous · 26/07/2012 18:20

While I was pregnant a child was murdered Sad who had the same name as the one we had chosen for our unborn child. DH wouldn't consider changing it and tbh I am glad we didn't. There are other children born since with the same name and no one ever says anything about the poor child who was killed.

DukeHumfrey · 26/07/2012 18:23

What is "team yellow"?

Viviennemary · 26/07/2012 18:26

I don't think it will be associated with the shooting here in the UK. And in any case you could have named your child then the tragedy happened a few weeks afterwards. I think it's a really nice name.

CaseyShraeger · 26/07/2012 18:27

Generally in Internet usage "team green" means "have chosen not to find out the sex" and "team yellow" means "would have quite liked to find out the sex but baby hasn't yet cooperated". I think. At least on US sites.

SilkySmith · 26/07/2012 18:29

I've only ever heard "team yellow" and its been in relation to not wanting to find out

never heard of "team green" in terms of unborn babies sex

CaseyShraeger · 26/07/2012 18:30

I wouldn't change based on what you think other people might think. If you think that you, personally, aren't going to be able to get past the association then that could be a valid reason to change. TBH in the UK at least I think most people will think of the Disney Princess long before they think of the Batman shootings.

DukeHumfrey · 26/07/2012 18:32

Um, wow. Thanks.

Weird.

Nothing wrong with Aurora. To answer the question.

PeshwariNaan · 26/07/2012 18:33

I'm from the US and as horrible as it is to say - within a few years there will have been so many more shootings in so many more places, 'Aurora' won't even ring a bell. :(

Go ahead and stick with the name, it reminds me of Sleeping Beauty!!

Team Green/Team Yellow - WHY? Why not just say 'have chosen not to find out' or 'wanted to find out but couldn't'... really?!

SilkySmith · 26/07/2012 18:53

I dunno chipping? we found out with DS but we never said "team blue" suppose some people think its cute?

CaptainHetty · 26/07/2012 18:58

I love the name Aurora, it was one of my favourites for the baby due in 2 months. We decided on different names in the end but if it were on the list, I would still use it. I don't think many people are going to make the connection.

bagelmonkey · 26/07/2012 19:04

No one else will make the connection. It's down to whether you will or not.

The world being what it is you can pretty much guarantee that at some point whatever name you chose for your child will end up being associated with some kind of tragedy or evil in the world for 15 minutes. But the world moves on and one bad association (that will soon be forgotten) doesn't stop it being a beautiful name.
