Feel like our choice of girls name has been ruined but DP says not to worry

Really concerned about what to do. I am expecting my 1st child in a month or so and we are team yellow. After lots of discussions we agreed on a girls and boys name.
Now the girls name we chose was Aurora - for a number of reasons both to do with our relationship and family. Thinking of the northern lights etc.
Anyway after the tragic shooting in the US I feel torn and its really upsetting me (probably a bit to do with hormones).
DP says not to worry and that in a month or so no one will think of it but I worry that some people will associate it or if it is a girl she will one day look back and think her name was inspired by something horrible.
I feel selfish thinking about this when people tragically lost their lives.

what do you think?

I don't think people will make the connection. It's too far away.

Team Yellow, team green ? Confused what a load of tripe !

Just say what you mean !

spanky2 · 26/07/2012 19:13

Ds2 was born the day before Madeline McCann went missing, so I always think of her. You are hormonal, just go with what you feel happiest with.

If it doesn't feel right don't use it... You can decide when the baby is here and you meet her (if it is a her...) events on the news hit me very hard when I was pregnant. Naming my boys was all down to a feeling about the name suiting the baby when I met them. You could pass some time looking for back up names and wait and see. Good luck with everything!

Thank you thank you thank you. Feel reassured! By team yellow I meant we didn't want to find out the sex so the point might be mute as it could be a boy! Used team yellow as was trying to be quick I guess!
Feel much happier about name now. Had been worrying and thinking of other girls names will stop it now :-) only worry is Disney princess didn't know that guess will have to get used to Disney eventually.

This is the name DP and I have picked too and I had the same concerns as you. Still not sure if we will use it but I still love the name.

Chewbecca · 27/07/2012 08:39

The name Aurora reminds me of the P&O cruise ship, I didn't realise it was either a Disney princess (DS not into disney princesses) or the name of an American town.

I've been thinking about this name ever since the other thread appeared a few days ago and if I'm being honest I've changed my mind about advising to use it and this is because if you are having second thoughts about it now, don't go ahead with it like someone else said you may not be able to forget about the Batman shootings yourself no matter if anyone else makes the association or not.
Personally I've started to dislike the name myself and this is because two syllables sounds almost the same and I would go as far as saying I now find that repetitive and slightly annoying. Sorry just my own opinion :-(

I don't think it would be like calling your child Columbine* but it is hard to say a few days later. Most people are talking about the 'Denver' or 'Batman' shooting, and I think the name of the suburb has passed most people by.

FWIW, Aurora makes me think of Wayne's World, as it was set in Aurora, Illinois.

*Columbine is a name, quite a pretty one, meaning 'dove'. And it was Harlequin's lady-friend in Comeddia dell'Arte. These days, it's too connected with the school shooting, and people call their dove-children Paloma instead.

Trills · 27/07/2012 12:51

I didn't even know that the Batman shootings (the only things I've ever heard them referred to) were anything to do with the word Aurora until the other thread.

The Disney Sleeping Beauty was called Aurora and she was an irritating dance-around-with-the-birdies type of girl, but that's all. I can't imagine an Aurora being feisty.

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 27/07/2012 12:58

Isn't Columbine a flower as well?

On a separate note, DD might have been Jordan if she'd been a boy (she's 15 so it was years before the plastic one appeared in the meedja).

How unfortunate would that have been!

Point being, anything might happen in the future in relation to the name and you can't control that, so you should go with what you like now.

honeytea · 27/07/2012 15:29

I only think of princesses when it comes to this name, id say use it even with the sad news recently as time will pass and the reasons behind the name will be more of a memory than the shootings.

As for the team blue/yellow/pink thing I hate it! We are having a little boy and I hate it when people say "your team blue" it makes me think of a baby with breathing problems :( I really hope our baby is a healthy pink colour, and we will dress him in all colours!

Avalicious1980 · 27/07/2012 15:57

I think people are relating the shootings to Denver rather than Aurora. Aurora is a beautiful name and tends to remind me of the Disney Princess......and the place that Wayne and Garth live in Wayne's World.......!

4thplaceformathanxiety · 28/07/2012 04:57

I think of Wayne's World too Smile

I think your DP is right.
