If I call her Aurora, would it just make you think of this weeks tragedy?

The Disney Princess springs to mind as I live in the uk.
If I was living in the US then I'd avoid the name.

JollyHockeyStick · 23/07/2012 14:43

Nope, makes me think 'Borealis'.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 23/07/2012 14:43

I was thinking storm from the xmen.

squoosh · 23/07/2012 14:46

I think of Sleeping Beauty.

I also think that it's a tricky word to say.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 23/07/2012 14:46

I think sleeping beauty

TheCatInTheHairnet · 23/07/2012 14:46

I guess it depends. If. You liked the name beforehand, go for it.

If you read about the shootings and thought, "Aurora! That's a nice name!" that would be a bit weird!!

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 23/07/2012 14:52

Isn't she one of the Disney doe eyed non feminists? Sorry I am not up on my princesses but that's what it makes me think of. It's a pretty name tho.

FrillyMilly · 23/07/2012 14:58

It wouldn't make me think of the shootings. It makes me think of sleeping beauty.

Nemonemo · 23/07/2012 15:03

No it was what we'd decided ages ago, but now it's 'the aurora shootings' in the paper, and I'm wondering if that's going to be the first thing people associate with it. It feels a bit weird to name her that a month after a big tragedy of the same name.

I have known some Spanish speaking women/kids called Aurora. It comes from the Latin meaning 'dawn'. My main reservation would be the way its pronunciation would be mangled in these 'ere northern parts Grin

It's pretty though and no, I would not associate it with the shootings.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/07/2012 15:05

No. It might if you lived near Denver, not otherwise.

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 15:14

No

holyshow · 23/07/2012 15:17

Disney Princess associations for me here too. What about Aurelia? I love Aurelia.

Trills · 23/07/2012 15:19

Definitely Sleeping Beauty.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 23/07/2012 15:20

No. Northern Lights.

Trills · 23/07/2012 15:22

I didn't even know that anything had happened anywhere called "Aurora" until you brought it up.

Every mention I've seen has used the word "Batman" to clairfy what they were talking about, not the name of the theatre

SpringHeeledJack · 23/07/2012 15:23

do bear in mind that A LOT of little kids can't pronounce their rs

she would most likely be Auwowa till about Y2

Nemonemo · 23/07/2012 15:24

Apparently sky news are referring to it as Aurora and BBChas used it today. Maybe I'm just picking it up more as that word now means something else to me! Consesus is a no, so maybe we don't have to come up with a new name!

PetiteRaleuse · 23/07/2012 15:24

No. It actually took me a moment to make the link to this week's tragedy - I think of it as being in Denver. It wouldn't be like calling her Columbine as that was never a first name (or if it was, not a common one).

Aurora is lovely - it was on my list but DH vetoed it both times.

Nemonemo · 23/07/2012 15:25

Well our surname has a lot of 's's and she may well have a lisp, so that sort of thing doesn't bother me.

Sadly, these mass shootings seem to happen annually in America and in a couple of years time it'll have drifted out of people's consciousness.

Not Columbine though, that one everyone remembers.

PetiteRaleuse · 23/07/2012 15:26

Plus, people might be reminded of it for a few weeks, but, and I really don't mean to come across as crass here, people have short memories. In a few weeks the UK press will hardly mention what happened except when the guy's trial comes up - possibly on anniversaries etc. Your DD's name will be with her for far longer than that.

iknowwho · 23/07/2012 15:28

Yes it would.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 23/07/2012 15:29

It's a beautiful name. My only reservation is that if she turns out to speak with a soft 'r' her own pronunciation of it might sound a bit odd ...

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 23/07/2012 15:30

No it wouldn't as it's mostly been 'Denver' they've been saying. It's a Disney Princess to me though & for that reason I wouldn't use it.
