I hate all Swedish boys names! :(

We recently had our 20 week scan and found out that we are having a little boy, I am over the moon! The only problem is that now we are more seriously name brain storming I have realised that there are relaly no Swedish names for boys that I love. My OH was convinced the baby was a girl so we had concentrated on girls names and had some lovely girls names picked out.

I have a Swedish baby name book and these are the names that I would consider (but non jump out to me as being amazing)

Alf (reminds me of the guy from home and away)
Alvar (means from nature.. it is appropriate as the baby was conceived the month we were due to have IVF)
Elmer (the elephant?)
Frej (sounds too much like freja?)
rasmus (I like Erasmus but OH will only consider Rasmus, I don't want to call the baby part of a name.. if it was Erasmus my OH could still call him Rasmus, also I don't like the name "raz" as a nn.. it reminds me of "out on the raz" meaning going to pubs and getting drunk)
Sören
Teodor (I don't really like the gift from god meaning as we are not really religious but tio is a nice nn)
tor (god of thunder, I like the meaning but i struggle to say tor in swedish as the o sounds a bit like ou and the r is rolled... so the baby would have its own mum mispronouncing his name forever)

I would love to give the baby a really English name but we live in Sweden and will live here most probably for all of the baby's childhood. DO you think it is so awful to give a child a foreign name?

I am going to apply my Vulcan logic to your baby naming quandry: You hate all Swedish boys names. You are English. Give him an English name.

It will give him an exotic air that the boys and girls will go wild for when he's older. Seriously.

I know a Swedish boy called Noel (pronounced No-ell)

Have loved the name Sören since I first met one over 30 years ago.

I also like Alvar for its appropriateness.

Know a really SWEET little boy called Stefan (Swedish mum) he is LOVELY.

Added into the confusion is my job I teach little kids spoken English so I know lots lovely children with Swedish names but it feels a bit wrong to steal their name, Stefen is one of those names.

I seriously considered Erik for DS2 when pregnant simply because of Erik the vampire in "True Blood" . DH was keener than me

I have similar naming dilemmas although Danish/English rather than Swedish/English and we're currently living in the UK.

Don't know what flavour we're having yet.

I really like Søren but I'm avoiding any names with special characters.

There are quite a few names I like but most are spoken for in the wider family.

I need names that work in both Danish and English, although I'm happy to have a longer Danish name with a shorter nickname which is easy enough for people over here. A lot of the more English looking names mentioned on this thread have quite a different pronunciation in Danish and I expect similar for Swedish. So what sounds nice in one language I don't like in another.

Oh, and I want to avoid anything that appeared as a main character in The Killing, Borgen or the Bridge!

From my work (lots of internationals) the 3 swedes had pretty good names:

All pretty cool actually... but I have no swedish connections so would be unlikely to ever use them :-(

I had a summer fling with a Swedish guy called Tomas. He was gorgeous!

Anders is nice and I know two Jespers, but they're both Danish.

Bjorn did pretty well at tennis as did Stefan.

Karstan do you know if you can actually register a äöå letter in a name in the UK? we will get duel citizenship for the baby but it would be rubbish to have to have soren or bjorn on their uk passport rather than sören or björn.

I love the name lisbet for a girl even with the dragon tattoo connection, its really unpopular here right now.. but I dont need a girls name!

Soren was on our like list for DC3 (due in 6wks) but as we already have a Lola who thinks that she is THE Lola from C&L, to produce a little Soren for her to play with would probably tip her over the edge :o

Not sure on the official registration. I just know that living in the UK 99% of computer systems won't accept the special character so it would get altered anyway. Perhaps less of an issue if you're staying in Sweden.

my DP's name has an å in it and my family just can't cope, we also have 3 ä's in our address and my family just put random dots above all the vowels.

littlemiss my DH is half Swedish and has an uncle Kai and an uncle tony. They are Swedish born and bred. Good luck on you hunt!

I agree, it can be tricky to take an åöä type name as it will be misspelt/mispronounced often.

Good luck! We wanted also to make sure that the names we liked were 'contemporary' to our DDs generation IYSWIM. Not popular as such, but just fitting to their age. We used top 100 type websites to check that kind of thing.

Soren, Sten, Tor, Axel, Oscar, Lukas, Hugo, Emil, Oliver are fab names...i don't see what the problem is.
I have a friend who named her boys Lukas and Soren (they are half-Canadian half-Indian...no scandinavian roots at all).
