I hate all Swedish boys names! :(

We recently had our 20 week scan and found out that we are having a little boy, I am over the moon! The only problem is that now we are more seriously name brain storming I have realised that there are relaly no Swedish names for boys that I love. My OH was convinced the baby was a girl so we had concentrated on girls names and had some lovely girls names picked out.

I have a Swedish baby name book and these are the names that I would consider (but non jump out to me as being amazing)

Alf (reminds me of the guy from home and away)
Alvar (means from nature.. it is appropriate as the baby was conceived the month we were due to have IVF)
Elmer (the elephant?)
Frej (sounds too much like freja?)
rasmus (I like Erasmus but OH will only consider Rasmus, I don't want to call the baby part of a name.. if it was Erasmus my OH could still call him Rasmus, also I don't like the name "raz" as a nn.. it reminds me of "out on the raz" meaning going to pubs and getting drunk)
Sören
Teodor (I don't really like the gift from god meaning as we are not really religious but tio is a nice nn)
tor (god of thunder, I like the meaning but i struggle to say tor in swedish as the o sounds a bit like ou and the r is rolled... so the baby would have its own mum mispronouncing his name forever)

I would love to give the baby a really English name but we live in Sweden and will live here most probably for all of the baby's childhood. DO you think it is so awful to give a child a foreign name?

thank you!

Soren is lovely.

redrubyshoes · 19/07/2012 11:36

Steen?

OhStopthat · 19/07/2012 12:18

What about Magnus? I wanted that for one of our DSs but was vetoed by DH.

englishmummyinwales · 19/07/2012 14:15

My son is called Lukas, which I thought was the common Swedish spelling (Lukas Moodysson, the film director is Swedish), but I see from that list above that Lucas is in the top 10, so spellt the more common way in the UK?

I also love Jonas and I've also always rather liked Stefan, which again is not too 'out there' for a half British child? Is that as out of favour as Stephen is here nowadays?

LemonBreeland · 19/07/2012 14:18

I really don't think you need to go THAT Swedish with the name. My cousin is Swedish and just had a baby William. There are plenty of names that will work in Sweden but are from elsewhere. Stay clear of J's and th's and you should be fine.

swedie · 19/07/2012 14:27

Rasmus is a whole name in Sweden. So that would be

swedie · 19/07/2012 14:29

What about:
Fredrik
Jakob
Henrik
Johan
Karl
All work in both languages.

littlemissbroody26 · 19/07/2012 14:40

I love the name elvin! that is going on the list :)

I knew a tor he was also very sexy i wonder if it's the same person!?

I am English so the baby will be a half brit. The problem I have with swedish names that also work in English is that they sound a little different, like joel is said you-ell, I love English names like rafferty and rupert.

I am going to try and do a deal with my OH.. DS can have his swedish last name if i get to choose an english first name!

:)

I adore all of the names listen in your OP. Which I realise is so unhelpful I might as well not click the 'post message' button - but heck with it, I'll do it anyway Grin

littlemissbroody26 · 19/07/2012 14:57

Emil nice but i dont like the way it sounds like ear-mil in swedish, also tobias is fab, but my oh has a nephew called tobias.. we both have huge families so there are not many names left!

Knew a very sexy Swedish Jürgen (Famous Tor's brother perhaps? lol)
