It's pleasant, fairly non-descript, and cute for a baby - hence it's astonishing popularity. But because of it's popularity I find it boring and unimaginative. So I understand why people choose it but I can't say I love it personally.

Viviennemary · 17/07/2012 10:15

I think it's very pretty. Much nicer than lots of names I see on here. But I can your point if there are lots and lots of them.

Stellan · 17/07/2012 10:23

As this combination is so commonly used, I think you might as well just accept it as a name in its own right - like Lilian, I suppose. If you think of it like that, it's not nearly as commonplace as some of the other choices mentioned here.

That said, it's not to my own taste (I don't like most hyphenated names) but there's nothing wrong with Lily-May.

There is a LOT wrong with Lili-Mae, Lili Mai, Lili-May, Lillie-Mae, Lillie-Mai, Lillie-May, Lilli-Mae, Lilli-Mai, Lilli-May, Lilly-Mae, Lilly-Mai, Lilly-May, and Lili-Mai though. Some of those spellings are actually more popular than the prosaic Lily-May. Interestingly, Lily-Mae seems to be the most popular spelling. Have a look here for a full list - www.britishbabynames.com/blog/hyphen-names-2010.html.

This was SO unusual 11 years ago - people looked at me like I was mad when I said Lily (Lilian) May!

ErikNorseman · 17/07/2012 12:48

It's Sooooo dull! However I remember thinking my friend's DD Ella Mae had such an unusual and pretty name 10 years ago - now I'd just cringe.

valiumredhead · 17/07/2012 12:56

It was my Grandmother's name.

bigbluebump · 17/07/2012 13:58

Such hugely fashionable names will not only sound dated as they fall out of favour again, but will often need an additional modifier (e.g. initial) to tell it apart from all the others with the same name.

20wkbaby · 17/07/2012 14:02

Why would you start a thread specifically to be nasty about a very popular name? Unless you are on a mission to offend as many people as possible.

Try reading this thread through with the name of your child substituted wherever someone has written Lily May and see how you feel.

Contrary to how it seems on many baby names threads it is possible to voice an opinion about a name that you don't like without being offensive.

CharlieBoo · 17/07/2012 14:04

Yawn...

mayanna123 · 17/07/2012 14:11

Yes, a little unimaginative and dull. Especially given how many, many lovely classic underused names exist.....!!!

Lilyloo · 17/07/2012 14:13

It's obviously a nice name hence its popularity.

CharlieBoo · 17/07/2012 14:16

I meant yawn to this thread not the name, I just don't get the point of them other than to offend.

Newtothisstuff · 17/07/2012 14:22

My DD1 is a Lily, just plain Lily no may, 6 years ago when she was born (and it wasnt in the top 5 names) my Step Mother told me to pick a nice middle name because Lily was a stupid name and she would be embarrassed when she's older Sad it's now really over popular and she denies ever saying it !!

MammaTonic · 17/07/2012 14:39

I think it's a beautiful name.

MammaT

IawnCont · 17/07/2012 14:48

It's a pretty name. The parents probably know it's popular, and it doesn't bother them. And now I come to think of it, I don't know a single one.

However, in my mind children named May should be May-born. But that is my weirdness.

propercharlie · 17/07/2012 15:06

Where in my OP have a said anything offensive? In fact where have I stated anything other than a fact? I haven't even expressed an opinion about the name.

Fwiw it is a very pretty name, in fact, I like it.

The point is it is just so painfully over-used I simply cannot believe there are still parents opting for it!! I just don't get it!

OP posts:
IawnCont · 17/07/2012 15:52

Well, in your own circle, you know plenty. You "don't get" why people would opt for a popular name, even if it is very pretty.
Personally, I don't get why people are so bothered about other people's name choices.

squoosh · 17/07/2012 16:02

It's definitely the hyphenated name of choice these days.

I know a trillion Anne-Maries born in the late 70's.

valiumredhead · 17/07/2012 16:15

Err Lily is a pretty classic name Hmm

MammaTonic · 17/07/2012 17:09

I'm also aware from a couple of other threads on MN that the spelling 'Mae' (instead of 'May'), really irritates some.

May is probably the most common and/or expected spelling in England. Mae is a Scottish pet-form for Margaret, so Mae has the same meaning as Margaret. Mai, on the other hand, is a Thai (I think) spelling.

So, these spellings - of this name at least - are legitimate!

Ahhhtetley · 17/07/2012 17:12

Do you mean to offend people who've named their children that or do you not really care?

squoosh · 17/07/2012 17:15

I think she's just astounded at knowing a tenth Lily-May. I don't think she's being offensive.

perceptionreality · 17/07/2012 17:22

Is it Lily-May on the Green Balloon Club or is that Lily-Rose?

I agree op I know of a recent Lily-May.

MammaTonic · 17/07/2012 17:25

It's Lily-Rose on The Green Balloon Club. Isn't Lily-Rose also the name of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' daughter?

That's another gorgeous name, IMO.

MT

perceptionreality · 17/07/2012 17:42

I think Lily-Rose on TGBC's real name is Isabella.
