Yes, meant to say that Lily-Rose is the character!

I have a beautiful daughter named Lily May that I named after my wonderful gran. What gives you the right to decide what names are boring, old fashioned or popular. In future keep your narrow minded opinions to yourself. It's the parents choice what to name their child not yours.

ShovettyMcShovetty · 03/08/2014 10:43

mammy, this thread is ANCIENT so I wouldn't bother having a go at the op tbh. She probably isn't even on here anymore. Thanks

maggiethemagpie · 03/08/2014 21:15

mammy, she has every right to say what names she thinks are boring, old fashioned or popular as this is a DISCUSSION on the NAMES board. In fact she has the right to freedom of speech. As do you.

shareacokethissummer · 03/08/2014 22:00

Everybody seems to name lily may after their Gran - and Evie too Grin

It must all skip a generation. I wonder if Jean, Pauline, margaret, will make a comeback next, followed by Helen, Claire, Tracy, Lisa.

Dixiechicken · 03/08/2014 22:41

I regret my dd1 name. First name is only slightly different to Lily and thought I'd was original using the middle name Mae 14 years ago.

I didn't bank on the popularity.

Vintagejazz · 04/08/2014 22:16

It's a nice name but I agree that a lot of names just become boring and unimaginative through over use.

And what is it with people who open these threads simply to flounce around being offended? It's a baby names forum. It's for people to voice their opinions on names. If you don't like it, don't take part in it!

Vintagejazz · 04/08/2014 22:18

Jeeze, just realised some poster opened this two year old thread to get all upset and snappy about someone not liking their daughter's name. Some people really need to get a life.

steppemum · 04/08/2014 22:26

my great grandmother and her sisters (born around1885) were:

Daisy May
Lily May
Rosie May
Violet May

My Mum called me Daisy May as a nickname when I was little. I used to think they were wonderful unusual and pretty names.

I am very sad they have become so popular, I didn't use any of them for my dds as they were no longer so original.

steppemum · 04/08/2014 22:38

AArgh - didn't realise it was a zombie thread.

zazA09Jane · 05/08/2014 00:05

burst out laughing when I seen this, I know 6 lily-mays..but they vary between lilly-mai/lillie-may/lily-may. I also know a 'Lexii-Maii' yes.. spelt with all 4 iiiis

splendide · 06/08/2014 09:46

Lily is a really pretty name I think

ACM88 · 06/08/2014 13:36

Despite it's current popularity, it's always been pretty, not sure if it will ever fade. But I would never chose it, a name looses it's appeal to me when I know several!!

Don't think the thread has rude intentions.

Beautifullymixed · 08/08/2014 12:21

My great nana was called Lilian May too.
Must have been a very popular name back then.

My dd aged 21 has the middle name May as greatnana died while I was pregnant. Sad

I do agree about the popularity of Lily May and wonder if the parents just gave up trying to think of names and went for the first one they liked.
Why would you use a name so overused?
I just smile when I hear names announced that are all the same. For example, at our school three Mias were born in the space of eight months. Just after the royal family.
Two even have the same middle name!
Where is the originality?

NinjaLeprechaun · 08/08/2014 12:43

Why would you use a name so overused?
When my daughter was born the name I chose for her was a top-ten name, and had been even more popular the previous few years. Only I didn't spend time around a lot of people with children, and had no idea. I'm sure I'm not the only person this has happened to. Mind you this was pre-internet, so it's easier to check now. She was named after my grandmother so I might have gone with it anyway.
Or maybe they had a popular name and didn't mind - or an unpopular name and hated it - and so it doesn't matter to them.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 08/08/2014 17:15

I like Lily, it's pretty but wouldn't use it due to it being so popular. I'm bored of May/Mae/Mai as a middle name, it's like the default option.

Beautifullymixed · 08/08/2014 17:24

When there's a Lily in Eastenders and Corrie you know it's overkill. Smile

Pebbles0934 · 09/08/2014 02:17

I think Ava has taken over from Lily?! I know 3 newborns called Ava!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 09/08/2014 10:51

Ava is very popular. I work with children and hear the same names frequently.

freyaW2014 · 11/08/2014 23:27

I have a lily and it's timeless I think

rachel234 · 12/08/2014 07:02

Lily must have risen up the popularity charts as I know so many aged 10 and under. Personally I prefer less trendy names.
And imo it is nice for middle names to have some meaning or significance.

My DDs name is not Lily May but it's in the same vein. Her middle name choice was after my grandma, and I had no idea how popular it was. Her first name was just something we both liked and apparently it's very popular and gets mixed reviews in here but i don't actually know another one.
I am sure people must have said not another xxx xxx but to our faces all said she has a beautiful name.
We are not all super imaginative and while we may have considered some other more unusual names on our short list, we went with something more simple, pretty and classic.
Lily in itself is very pretty and May just happens to flow very nicely with it.

rachel234 · 15/08/2014 07:17

It may be a pretty name but any name that becomes so overused loses its sparkle and its main purpose (namely to identify). It will also sound dated as it falls out of fashion again.

AliciaBotty · 16/08/2014 15:12

I think it's only on here that people aspire to unusual names. I honestly think a lot of people are flattered by having a popular name as it reinforces their taste. Also, most people just choose a name they like.

Weird.
