Any suggestions ladies most welcome, it seems so much easier to agree on girls names. But we're a bit stuck on the boys....
So far we've listed eoghan and aiden

fucking hell, we're not snobs just because we don't like your nephew's name. I'm sure you don't like things I do, and I'm not calling you a bogger. Whatever bee you have in your bonnet about Jonjo leave it go ffs, not everyone is going to like it!

And it's not Irish neither, so there! :)

paolocee · 17/07/2012 23:05

A "bogger"? Jaysus, you really do hate the peasants, do you not, your ladyship?

Again, butting in where your input was not requested or appreciated. Ever thought of a spot of anger management therapy?

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 17/07/2012 23:05

Paco - this is baby names. Posters suggest baby names and others say they like them or dislike them. Sometimes they give the reason why. I did apologise further upthread for any offence I caused you, you may have missed it. I often see DS's name criticised here, and it stings a little, but I don't say anything because I think the purpose of this topic is to garner opinion on names and people may not always like the response but no need to get so upset about it.

paolocee · 17/07/2012 23:07

The name is Paolo. And you can deny your country's history all you like but it is still your history. I just hate snobbery. From whatever corner it emanates.

Starfishkiss · 17/07/2012 23:10

Cabhán?

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 17/07/2012 23:12

Sorry, that looks really bad I didn't mean to mistype your name. Why do you think I am 'denying my country's history'? Because I described a character based on a lot of people I know to to sum up a name?

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 17/07/2012 23:15

My kids have Irish names, I'm not denying any history Confused
You're coming across really angry Paolo (sorry about the name mix up), is everything ok?

CheerfulYank · 17/07/2012 23:19

I love Deaglan/Declan.

paolocee · 17/07/2012 23:30

FuckerSnail (fab name btw). And that WAS funny.

But I've seen it so many times. We're embarrassed about our kowtowing to the priests. And rightly so. But we can't airbrush it from history. Jonjo is a Catholic-inspired name. And it's associated with the rural classes. But why is that a bad thing? The English have reclaimed names such as Stanley, why can't we? And why do we have to pretend we're something we're not.

And as for FTU - please stop stalking me.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 17/07/2012 23:36

Hmm, good point. You don't see names like that enough. For example, I quite like Paddy for a boy, but DH doesn't, it's too culchie for him. He's a Dub though, which explains a lot. I should have stuck to my own kindGrin.

KeepYerTitsIn · 17/07/2012 23:47

I have a second cousin called JohnJo, English of Irish descent, he's v v handsome and an all round top bloke! Never heard any kind of comments on his name, as it's par for the course in Ireland and we're all really proud of our heritage. Most people marrying into our family quickly become quasi-Irish themselves and all seem to have given their kids Irish names, as have I. Most sound romantic, or cool, or both, I think.

paolocee · 18/07/2012 00:10

FuckerSnail, I totally agree.

Paddy is a great name. So is Jonjo. So is Padraig. So is Tadgh. Let's stop being embarrassed with who we are. BTW, I worked in D4 for a decade. Shitehole.

mathanxiety · 18/07/2012 05:41

Eoin and Eoghan are two separate names.
Eoghan is the equivalent of Eugene.
Eoin is a version of John via Ian afaik.

CheerfulYank · 18/07/2012 05:46

I thought Sean was the same as John/Ian. Blush

Is Eoghan pr Owen?

CailinDana · 18/07/2012 08:23

You're right Cheerful - Sean is the Irish for John and Eoghan is pronounced Owen.

squoosh · 18/07/2012 10:23

I love the name Paddy and hate the name JohnJo.

Hating the name JohnJo has nothing to do with being ashamed of my heritage, I just think it's a crap name.

So Irish people are obliged to love all Irish names and if they don't they are self hating born again snobs? Fuck that.

squoosh · 18/07/2012 10:37

And as for the oh so predictable 'D4 is a shitehole', zzzzzzzzz. Are people who live in D4 less Irish than those who live in Galway? I didn't realise there was a points system in operation before you could claim to be properly Irish.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 18/07/2012 10:43

I don't think I have been snobby or stalking any one, but the defensiveness over a name is bizarre.
That's part of posting on the internet though, people don't always agree, but you can't solely address someone or say your input was not asked for!
I don't think anyone is embarrassed by being Irish, but biblical names are not Irish no matter how often they are used in Ireland. Mary isn't Irish but commonly used in Ireland.
