Which of the names I love are suddenly going to explode in popularity?

Because DS has a really popular name that felt fresh and a bit unusual when we chose it and I now know at least five of them!

Basically, I'm not particularly original and so the odds are that if I like a name it's because it is powering up the charts. Opinions please on the following:

Joel
Aiden
Euan
Evan
Ivan
Robin

Astrid
Marnie
Nina
Merryn
Marina
Elfie

Nice names. No idea which ones are going to become popular. If Elfie short for something?

gallicgirl · 08/07/2012 15:31

Aidan, Euan and Evan are probably going to be popular - there are boys with these names at DDs nursery.

Maybe Marnie for girls, not so sure.
I thought Meredith was going to start being hugely popular but it doesn't seem to have happened yet.

Mintyy · 08/07/2012 15:34

You can't name a child Elfie! Don't worry, that one is never going to be popular.

Passmethecrisps · 08/07/2012 15:34

It just shows what a trail blazer you are and what fabulous taste you have!

It is difficult to tell - I think your name choices are lovely. Also wondering abou Elfie though.

AdventuresWithVoles · 08/07/2012 15:50

Probably none, but Marnie or Aiden, if you must. DD has an alternative identity as a Marnie.

Pancakeflipper · 08/07/2012 15:55

I have noticed a few Astrid's around of late.
Don't do Elfie unless you can promise that your daughter will be very slim and dainty all her life.

ladyinthelibrary · 08/07/2012 15:56

I LOVE Marnie. There was a book when I was younger called When Marnie Was There. Not quite sure how none of my three DDs didn't get called it!

nkf · 08/07/2012 15:59

I know that book. It's wonderful. There's a Hitchhock film called Marnie too.

BikeRunSki · 08/07/2012 16:01

Of those, amongst the U5s I know, I know

1 Marnie (3.9)
2 Robins (Both 2.8)
1 Elfie (ten months)

I know adults and older children with all the other names you've listed.

LadyofWinterfell · 08/07/2012 16:15

I have a Joel and a Merren, and she was the only one in 2003. I've never met another one. Joel is fairly popular at the moment, top 50 i think, but all the ones i know are older than mine!

I would think Joel will stay top 50, but Aiden or Robin will go up same as Austin has recently. Not sure about the girls names, maybe Marnie as it's quite an old name and they seem to be coming back in fashion!

Subarashii · 08/07/2012 16:43

I love Marnie too, which is why the warning bells are going off.

Point taken about Elfie, I've taken it off the list. I think it will get more popular as people look for the next Eva/Ava/Evie though. And I think it's lovely! But a girl taking after me would probably not be described as graceful or slim... Shock

In its place I will add:

Marian

Hmm. The more I think, the more I reckon Merryn is going to be big in a few years.

Elfie and Marnie are FOUL.

If it helps, I know a few Edies and Effies and one baby Eppie.

Aidan & Evan are already extremely popular.

Viviennemary · 08/07/2012 17:55

Elfie????? I thought it was a typing error and should be Elsie. Surely nobody names their child Elfie.

Yourefired · 08/07/2012 18:00

I predict the next big boys name will be Jonah. Nothing registering for girls in our area.

sandberry · 08/07/2012 18:00

Aiden is already popular as is Evan, infact I would say they've been and gone round here. Euan is likely to be popular. You'd be okay with Ivan and Robin.

Astrid, Marnie and Merryn are all on their way up. I love Marnie and Merryn though. Nina is a name that is around but imo not likely to be super popular just steady. Marina should be fine and I like Elfie!

AnnaNimitty · 08/07/2012 18:12

I saw some photos of Kate Moss' wedding, and one of her very pretty bridesmaids was called Elfie. The full name would be Elfrida. There's nothing
wrong with the name, and I'm guessing it will become fashionable. I like Marian, and although this name was popular in the 1940s and 50s, it may well make a comeback.

Personally, I have never seen the attraction of Robin, but your other names
are nice, and will probably all become increasingly popular

jeanjeannie · 08/07/2012 18:22

Love all of those - nicest selection I've seen for ages! I like Robin the least and I had Ivan and Marina on our short list - so particularly partial to those!

Ham69 · 08/07/2012 18:29

Elfie is the name of Ross noble (Geordie comedian)'s daughter. If you like it, go for it. I don't think any child will be 'ribbed' for their name these days. I'm sure it will never become too popular.

Bearcrumble · 08/07/2012 18:31

I know an Astrid age 4 and a Marnie and a Marina - both 2-y-o.

My 2-y-o DS also has a name that is pretty popular at the moment (Alexander) but you don't really think about that sort of thing with your first. I now have a new baby called Marianne and am terrified of it taking off.

stressheaderic · 08/07/2012 18:33

I know a Marnie who was named so that the parents could say 'our Marnie' and it sounded like Armani. I shit you not.

Mintyy · 08/07/2012 18:38

PLEASE not Elfie! That is a stupid name.

Bumperlicious · 08/07/2012 18:38

I like Merryn, only ever heard it on someone my age.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/07/2012 19:48

I know a baby Marnie and a Nina from your girls' list.
A Joel and Evan who are about four and a baby Euan.

rosielum · 08/07/2012 21:38

I have a 12mth old Marina, named for a Spanish friend of ours. She said the name had gone out of fashion in Spain for a while but was becoming increasingly popular again there.

5madthings · 08/07/2012 21:54

my 18mth old dd is called Merryn, havent met any others and in the yr she was born there were less than 20 babies named merryn, i hope it doesnt become popular!

Astrid was also on our list! we have similar taste as i also liked Robin for a boy or a girl but they are both becoming more popular i think.

i know a few Euans and i also know one Marina, or i did, they moved she must be about 8 now?

my dp wanted the name Nina for dd, but i can only think of nina and the neurons! sorry, i do know a 7yr old nina tho, who is lovely, againi think its becoming more popular.

the only marnie i know is a dog, but its quite a nice name :)
