Which of the names I love are suddenly going to explode in popularity?

Because DS has a really popular name that felt fresh and a bit unusual when we chose it and I now know at least five of them!

Basically, I'm not particularly original and so the odds are that if I like a name it's because it is powering up the charts. Opinions please on the following:

Joel
Aiden
Euan
Evan
Ivan
Robin

Astrid
Marnie
Nina
Merryn
Marina
Elfie

Joel -lovely name, I know 1 boy called Joel.
Aiden - ok, but it is quite popular round here, so there are quite a few of them.
Euan - nice too, but have met a few (though DS1's age, 13, rather than younger)
Evan - love it, not too popular
Ivan - not so keen, but I haven't met any
Robin - gorgeous, my friend has a little Robin, the only one I know (though I knew a few female Robyn's when I was a child)

Astrid - love love love it! Never met one
Marnie - nice, not a name I've come across
Nina - reminds me of Nina and the Neurons too.
Merryn - lovely
Marina - not too keen
Elfie - cute, but sounds like it should be a nn.

I have an Evan. Have never heard of anyone around here or anyone I know using it. DDs name is a very popular one. To be honest, I just liked the names. Popularity doesn't bother me, it's if I've taught a horror with a particular name it puts me off.

freerangeeggs · 08/07/2012 23:43

I quite like Elfie, but I wouldn't like to be called it myself. I could see it working well on certain people, but like the previous poster said, only dainty people :)

Mirren and variants are already quite popular in Scotland - quite similar to Merryn.

Your names are all lovely. I don't think any of them will increase hugely in popularity, but Nina and Astrid are very 'on-trend'

I think with your choices it will depend on where you live. More likley to be Euans in Scotland than England.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 09/07/2012 04:48

I know 4 Marnie's. It's a lovely name though.

SuperSesame · 09/07/2012 10:50

I have an Ivan and I did get jittery about it
soon after I'd introduced him to people.
For some reason, I got questioned on a number of occasions if it was a family name. Is that code for 'why on earth would you chose that if it wasn't a family name?'
But now, a year later, I love it and am so glad we chose it. I don't know any other children with it and I hope it doesn't get popular!

IVAN THE TERRIBLE

SuperSesame · 09/07/2012 11:03

Yes he is terrible but in a cute way!

Subarashii · 09/07/2012 17:40

Thanks Anna

We are in the South-East.

Evan and Aiden are already popular. I don't think any of the others will explode, I wouldn't be too concerned about popularity with any (except Evan and Aiden).

RillaBlythe · 09/07/2012 21:07

I have a Nina, I doubt it is going to explode in popularity tbh. I've met one other since she was born.

VolAuVent · 09/07/2012 21:27

Astrid is the most faddy of those.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/07/2012 21:29

Ooh I love Robin - and I don't think it is likely to become over-used.

Moshlingmummy · 09/07/2012 21:32

I know a Joel, Aidan, Euan and Marnie - all are pre schoolers.

My favourites would be Evan and Nina from your list

Subarashii · 09/07/2012 22:01

Robin is fab, but would he just end up being nicknamed Rob? Not that I have anything against Rob, but he might as well be Robert, no?

Astrid is probably faddy but I'm a big Fringe fan, and it's growing on me...

I have a one year old Ivan and we've not met another yet so you're probably safe with that! I love your list! Several of those were on my short list too. Particularly like Merryn/Merren for a girl. Have you thought of Ivor or Ivo for a boy? They're more unusual and both lovely I think, but both sounded unfortunate with our surname... It's not 'Biggun' but I'm sure you can imagine!

NappiesandGladrags · 09/07/2012 23:03

Joel, Nina and Elfie are fab names and names i'd expect to 'become' popular

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 09/07/2012 23:58

I have an Aunty Marnie. She's 79! I know a 50 yo Elfie as well. Still can't get my head around a grown woman called Elfie, but it's a pretty name.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 10/07/2012 00:13

There isn't much point about worrying about it anyway. DD has a name that is frequently called over popular on here, but 9 years ago it was unheard of. Even the registrar commented on how uncommon it was. It's annoying, but it is what it is!!
