Can I ask you what you think about Lia, as a shortened form of Callia? I adore the name Callia and all its shortened forms of Cally, Callie etc but I have two friends with DDs called Cally.

I do however really like Lia. Would Callia Rose, shortened to Lia, be OK?

Yes lovely . But why not just Leah , which is lovelier ?

NadiaPopov · 07/07/2012 15:57

Lia just sounds like Liar. How about Lea?

MrsRhettButler · 07/07/2012 15:58

Very nice.

MrsRhettButler · 07/07/2012 16:00

It doesn't sound like liar because its pronounced Lee ah Confused

Feckbox · 07/07/2012 16:09

I agree with nada. Even though it is not pronounced liar it reads as if it is.
Don't give your child a name they spend their life explaining.
Ask me how I know

NadiaPopov · 07/07/2012 16:09

People won't always know how to pronounce it.

Feckbox · 07/07/2012 16:09

nadia. Sorry

mrsbugsywugsy · 07/07/2012 16:44

I prefer Leah Rose

whatlauradid · 07/07/2012 16:46

I think it's lovely. She can be called Lia and have Callia on her birth certificate and choose as she pleases.

annoyedaboutcake · 07/07/2012 16:46

I really don't like Leah. I know Lia is pronounced in the same way but I just don't like it. Plus "Leah" wouldn't be a diminutive of "Callia" which Lia would be.

PenisVanLesbian · 07/07/2012 16:49

You know she will have a lifetime of misspelled names though? Because if you pronounce it the same as Leah, everyone will write Leah.

exoticfruits · 07/07/2012 16:50

I can't see why you wouldn't go for Leah and then she doesn't have a lifetime of explaining in front of her.

NaturalNatures · 07/07/2012 16:57

Could you drop the c and have Allia?

annoyedaboutcake · 07/07/2012 16:59

Exoticfruits - because I don't like it Grin and because it isn't a diminutive of Callia. I don't like Allia - sounds like an alley!

Leah is a name in its own right and I don't like it. Lia is a shortened form of another name (Callia)

exoticfruits · 07/07/2012 17:10

Fair enough. I like Leah and don't like Lia-but it isn't my baby!

tammy234 · 07/07/2012 19:15

I would pronounce Lia like Mia (Lee-a)

Whereas I would pronounce Leah as Lay-ah.

Emandlu · 07/07/2012 19:17

Why not call her Callia then but call her Lia as a nickname?

I would have read Lia as Liar too.

annoyedaboutcake · 07/07/2012 19:18

Lol emandlu that's what my OP says! Grin

mrsbugsywugsy · 07/07/2012 19:19

Fair enough. How do you pronounce Callia (which syllable is the emphasis on)?

Either way it's a nice name, but maybe not such a great idea if you already know two.

Iceflower · 07/07/2012 19:29

I had a friend from Sri Lanka named Lia, and I think it's lovely as she was. As far as I know, no one had any problems with pronouncing it Smile

annoyedaboutcake · 07/07/2012 19:55

It's Cal (rhyming with 'sal') lee (rhyming with pea) a (sort 'a' as in apple) I don't know any Callias but I know a Cally and a Calleigh and Cally is a very natural short form of Callia. I don't however know any Lias :)

Iceflower, love your username, that's good to know!

To me, Lia is pronounced the same way as Mia (Lee-ya/Mee-ya). I don't see the issue with her being Callia and Lia being her NN. Lovely :)

puzzletree · 07/07/2012 22:05

I love the name Lia, beautiful!

boyfallingoutofthesky · 09/07/2012 13:32

I know a Lia, no-one seems to have problems pronouncing it and have never made the Liar connection. I think it is nice, though possibly prefer spelling Leah slightly.

Why do you have to shorten Callia anyway? - it is quite short, and Lia seems like a bit of a contrived shortening, not one that would happen naturally (that would probably be Cal/Callie - eg, have never heard Julia shortened to Lia, just Ju.)

oops, just noticed why you don't think you can use Callie as nick name - I wouldn't bother with a nickname if I were you, I never understand why people choose lovely names which are not terribly long then always shorten them!
