Is it a bit too Rooney-esque? I love it but have had bad reactions from others towards it. FWIW I've never met a little Kai, so have no preconceptions about the name, I just think it sounds nice!

Omg the thought you could give your child the same name as one that only has the bloody nerve to live in a COUNCIL FLAT

As I say I associate it with the Rooneys but if that doesn't bother you then who cares

Devora · 08/07/2012 01:05

I'm loving the 'council flat name' backlash Grin

You're right, how very dare anybody give their child a name that is rumoured to be popular with the [gasp] working classes?

I like Jayden. But then I was raised in a council flat.

He's got to go through life with his name, and it's got to work for him whether he becomes a brain surgeon or a plumber. Up to you what you choose but it's useful to look at the reactions to names you're thinking about -- because he'll have to live with the reactions in person.

"Depends where you live. In Hampshire Kai is pronounced like the more expensive type of goldfish. Tyler sounds like Toilet."

not where i live in hampshire, i know both a tyler and a kai and neither are pronounced as you describe.

stclair · 08/07/2012 15:13

Sorry, just means food to me.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 08/07/2012 15:17

Kai has a lot of different meanings throughout the world. Its a name that 'travels'.

Unfortunately its tarred in the UK by Rooney. I love it but wouldn't use it now due to that connection which is a real shame. They've ruined a great name.

JemimaMuddledUp · 08/07/2012 15:23

Spelt Cai it is quite popular in Wales and doesn't seem to have any WAG connotations. I have a nephew called Cai.

PrettyInDecadence · 08/07/2012 15:39

Cai is a good idea, but do you think people would always be spelling it wrongly?

OP posts:
AdventuresWithVoles · 08/07/2012 15:44

Yes Cai is confusing spelling, just go with Kai if you like it. I know loads age 10+. We live in a rural part of England where tractors outnumber people, no council flats in sight.

PrettyInDecadence · 08/07/2012 16:46

Okay, so Kai is definitely proceeding to the long short list :)

I actually quite like the name, but it does have a number of connotations associated with it.. Forget Rooney, Daniella Westbrooke ruined the. Ame years before.. Jesse is lovely, not sure Kai is a lovely enough match..

SLVC · 08/07/2012 21:27

(not that I think matching matters particularly, just Kai has ch** vibes that I wouldn't say Jesse has..)

SilkStalkings · 08/07/2012 21:51

Enthusiastic Troll it is def Koi in Southampton!

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 08/07/2012 21:59

we is much posher round my parts of hampshire then Grin

Booette · 08/07/2012 22:02

I had it on my list for DS2 (who ended up with Kyle instead) but it's quite popular. DS2 goes to school with a Kai. And my friend has a Malachi nn Kai. Malachi is a lovely name!

Jayden is also a lovely name. Wink

Lannie33 · 09/07/2012 20:23

Kai is becoming very popular in N. America, I know about 3 or 4 under the age of 2. But I like it.
In Estonian it's a girls' name...i know 3 American girls (with Estonian background) named Kai, one is 34, one is 23 and one is 14.
