Simon, Peter, Robert - bad associations? Alternatives?

JimbosJetSet · 03/07/2012 11:24

My favourite 3 names at the moment - I am hoping they fall into the 'everyone has heard of them and can spell them, but they are not particularly trendy at present' category.

But do you associate 'Simon' with 'simple?'
And 'Peter' with 'Baby P?'
And is Robert inevitably going to be called 'Robbie' (which I dislike)?

Or am I just thinking to hard here?

Thanks!

Peter is the nicest.

Westcountrylovescheese · 03/07/2012 11:28

I wouldn't have thought of simple Simon, I can't imagine it's a rhyme they use at school/nursery anymore is it?

Also wouldn't link to Baby P, many people I think wouldn't know that the boys name was that.

I know a few Roberts, none of which are known as Robbie... Ever... Rob more so.

I like all three and they are classic, easily spelt and not 'fashionable'. Favourite is Simon then Robert...

LaVolcan · 03/07/2012 11:38

I know a Robert who is known as Bert.

VolAuVent · 03/07/2012 11:39

They're all nice names, and I don't think those problems need to apply. Great shortlist - you can't go wrong!

mayanna123 · 03/07/2012 12:09

They are all lovely solid classic names that make a refreshing change from the overused Alfie/Archie/Sonny/Cutesy type names.

Even if people have previous associations, they will lose them instantly when they meet a new, lovely baby boy called any of the names.

mayanna123 · 03/07/2012 12:09

But PLEASE not Bert!!!

AlexanderSkarsgardIWould · 03/07/2012 12:11

I also would say Peter isn't overly associated with Baby P, Simon isn't overly associated with Simple Simon and and Robert is likely to be shortened to Rob.

Nice to see some normal names being discussed on MN for once!

birdofthenorth · 03/07/2012 12:22

Nice names. Especially like Peter. Prefer Simeon to Simon which I see as a little dated but still a nice name. Wouldn't have thought Simple Simon or Baby P.

I know a 2 year old Robert whose parents tried to insist on it staying the full version Robert every time but he gradually became Bobby and then Bob. Could you live with them if not with Robbie?

AWomanCalledHorse · 03/07/2012 12:27

I like Peter (considered it for DS) but all the Peter's I know are 'Pete' which makes me think of compost.
The baby P connection won't be there in 1,2 or 10 years, just like not many people will think Victoria Climbie if you said you were considering Victoria.

Robert; all the roberts I know are bob or rob.

Simon is good, I don't think 'simple simon' I think 'Simon Says' which might get old quickly?

MidWeekSlump · 03/07/2012 12:54

I like Robert best and would go with the Bob nn

ThatllDoPig · 03/07/2012 13:08

All good solid friendly traditional trustworthy names for boys and men. Lovely.

AWimbaWay · 03/07/2012 13:17

I like Robert. The Roberts I know are referred to as Rob or Bobby, not so keen on Bobby but that might be because a poor boy I knew at school was a little bit chubby and became known as Blobby (not by me I hasten to add!) but I like Rob.

squoosh · 03/07/2012 13:20

Bob is kind of cool. I'm with you on not liking Robbie though, think it sounds babyish on a grown man.

NoComet · 03/07/2012 13:22

I have to good friends and they are Rob and Bob, not Robbie.

I like Peter,

Simon was the naughty boy at primary and the quite one you forgot in the Sixth.

suburbandream · 03/07/2012 13:25

I wouldn't make the associations with Simple Simon and Baby P. Both are great names. Also like Robert but I think it's the most likely to be shortened, I've known a few Robs and Bobs but never a Robbie!

mistressploppy · 03/07/2012 13:28

I have a 4mo Peter and the Baby P thing does come up occasionally, but not enough to be a problem iyswim.

They're all lovely names and none have such a strong association with anything so as to be unusable imo

mistressploppy · 03/07/2012 13:29

Also, remember that they're not babies for long! Think about the boy/young teen/adult you're naming too

amck5700 · 03/07/2012 13:29

None of the names have bad associations to me.

What about John, Matthew or Steven?

HappyHippyChick · 03/07/2012 13:31

I have both a Robert and a Peter.

TBH I have never made the baby P association until you mentioned it now and even now it really doesn't bother me.

My dh loathes the name Robbie (stemming from a deep hatred of Robbie Williams) so I sometimes shorten it to Rob, no-one ever calls ds Robbie.

HappyHippyChick · 03/07/2012 13:31

Meant to say, great choices op!!

Viviennemary · 03/07/2012 13:35

There's nothing wrong with any of those names. They are good traditional names and I wouldn't make any links.

lottiegb · 03/07/2012 14:39

I know a few Robs (unavoidable I think) not Robbies.

A friend has a Peter, as classic but underused now, works well. Baby P was baby P, only talked of as Peter for a very short time, then usually with full name. I remember being surprised as I'd assumed the P was the surname initial.

Simon's ok, personally I've always thought it a bit wet but maybe that's the ones I've met. I wouldn't dwell on the simple connection.

Stellan · 03/07/2012 16:56

They are all fine choices!

minipie · 03/07/2012 19:40

No I wouldn't make any of those associations - there are far too many Simons and Peters for any particular association.

However Robert is definitely my favourite of those three. I know various Roberts and they are mostly Rob, never Robbie. Bob or Bobby is sweet for a small DS.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 03/07/2012 19:43

A baby bob would be so cute!
