Long time lurker in baby names/style and beauty pages but 1st time poster so please be gentle!!

We are expecting dc2 next week, boys name is confirmed and will be Noah William but if a girl still have a shortlist of 3 to choose from, would rather decide before delivery but husband and I cannot pick a favourite between them. Dd is called Amelie Elizabeth and our surname is Kerr, middle name most probably Anna or one of the 2 leftover from shortlist below.

Evangeline - loved for dd1 but concerned will get shortened to Eva, would at least want full name used until she old enough to decide if wants a Nname.

Seren - we are Scottish, living in Scotland, no Welsh connection, have never heard of this name locally so know is unusual up here, but appreciate can be perceived as more popular name elsewhere. Do you need to be welsh to use?

Elise - dd1 middle name is Elizabeth and this is a derivative of, do you think this is a problem?

TIA!!

I think Elise is beautiful :)

I wouldn't automatically make the connection with Elizabeth and actually think its nice that two sisters would have that similarity, but not dead obviously say like Laura and Lauren for example!

Nonio · 02/07/2012 10:05

I like Evangeline and your logic behind it. Evangeline Anna Kerr !

Wildwaterfalls · 02/07/2012 10:07

Go for Elise! I think it is lovely (was on our short list too). I think Evangeline might get shortened.

JoanDarc · 02/07/2012 10:10

Thanks! Am just delighted that someone at least thinks some of our names are nice, I have a very different taste in names to my friends and as everyone in my circle has been preggers lately, has made it difficult to talk names with those in RL!

Depends what you want really. Eve/evies are very common all over the country at present. Evangeline is great but would be shortened - if not by you, at school but her mates.

Seren I love.

Elise (re Ellesse) has had a um tracksuit wearing, red bull drinking association round hereabouts - apart from one lovely girl who's dad isn't of UK origin. Wouldn't use it myself beause of that but this that sort of thing is regional.

lottiegb · 02/07/2012 10:15

I wouldn't choose Evangeline - too long and easy to shorten, also sounds too angelic / showbizzy to me. I'd like Evelyn better.

Elise goes well with Amelie. Nns are available but not so obvious that people will jump to them automatically.

Seren is nice too.

jkklpu · 02/07/2012 10:16

Elise, though depending on where you are in Scotland, people may not pronounce it as beautifully as you would like.

JoanDarc · 02/07/2012 10:22

Thanks jkklpu - that's one of the reasons why I ruled out Aurelia and hubby vetoed Eloise was for pronunciation with a Scots accent! I think Elise will be fine with in our area.

They are all very nice - you could always wait til she's born and see which one suits her best?

SpottyTeacakes · 02/07/2012 10:25

I live Seren. Also really like Elise but pronounced el eeze rather than el lease if that makes sense?!

Stellan · 02/07/2012 10:58

I really think that all names of 4 or more syllables will be shortened. My sister is named Alexandra but she's nearly always called Alex. Evangeline will be shortened - it is inevitable with such a long name, even if you always introduce her as Evangeline. I would imagine that Eve or Evie are more likely shortenings than Eva. It's a shame as Evangeline is lovely in full but you'll have a real battle ensuring she is always called it.

Being Welsh, I would assume a child named Seren would have Welsh connections. I don't think you need to be Welsh to use it - after all, Megan was once ubiquitous - but I think you need to be prepared for people to assume that you are. Seren doesn't sound as pretty or feminine as Amelie so I find it a little incongruous for her sister's name. Might you like Serena too?

Elise reminds me of Ellesse sportswear. A bit Sports Direct for my liking.

In short, Noah and Amelie are fab; Evangeline, Seren and Elise a little less so.

A selection of names parents used for sisters of Amelies, taken from the Telegraph Birth Announcements:
Beatrice
Darcey
Eliza
Elsa
Florence
Helena
Honor
Isla
Martha
Matilda
Ottilie
Sophie
Summer

lottiegb · 02/07/2012 11:18

How about Estelle or Celeste?

mrstowers · 02/07/2012 11:26

I love Elise but fear it would be shortened by school friends to Ellie (shudder!). Sorry but there are soooo many Ellie's around here.

VolAuVent · 02/07/2012 14:04

I like Elise best of the three. Personally would avoid for the middle name reason you've given, but it's up to you of course!

Serena
Elodie
Louisa
Rowena
Anneliese

Evangeline is a beautiful name, but little children really struggle to pronounce it - voice of experience here Sad

thisisyesterday · 02/07/2012 16:04

Evangeline is a beautiful name

GnocchiNineDoors · 02/07/2012 16:05

I like Evangeline best from your list.

I alsi liked your other suggestion of Aurelia....shame its been vetoed.

GnocchiNineDoors · 02/07/2012 16:07

I have met a girl named Noa. Just saying, if you really like Noah.

SoupDragon · 02/07/2012 16:10

Personally, I don't like Evangeline at all but leaving my personal taste out of it, it will get shortened. It's too long not to.

I have a Seren. I am not Welsh and we live in South London Her father's side of the family are Welsh but, TBH, I chose it because I loved Welsh girls' names.

Elise is my second favourite from your short list (obvious I am biased about Seren :o)

cosykins · 02/07/2012 16:14

Seren for me! Very pretty but also strong.
Good luck!

Shesaysso · 02/07/2012 16:15

My name is Elise and I have spent my life being called Elsie - dont know if that effects your decision.

mumnosbest · 02/07/2012 16:16

Elsie is lovely but so is Seren. Seren anne is haed to say as 2 names. Elsie anne much better.
Evangeline anne is a no no imo because of the an anne sounds.

SoupDragon · 02/07/2012 16:18

Seren Evangeline flows OK I think.

washngo · 02/07/2012 18:53

Seren Anna is lovely. So is Elise Anna actually. I prefer those two to Evangeline.
