Long time lurker in baby names/style and beauty pages but 1st time poster so please be gentle!!

We are expecting dc2 next week, boys name is confirmed and will be Noah William but if a girl still have a shortlist of 3 to choose from, would rather decide before delivery but husband and I cannot pick a favourite between them. Dd is called Amelie Elizabeth and our surname is Kerr, middle name most probably Anna or one of the 2 leftover from shortlist below.

Evangeline - loved for dd1 but concerned will get shortened to Eva, would at least want full name used until she old enough to decide if wants a Nname.

Seren - we are Scottish, living in Scotland, no Welsh connection, have never heard of this name locally so know is unusual up here, but appreciate can be perceived as more popular name elsewhere. Do you need to be welsh to use?

Elise - dd1 middle name is Elizabeth and this is a derivative of, do you think this is a problem?

TIA!!

Pretty split opinion on each of the options, might be more confused now!
Thanks to those who have suggested alternatives, I have been avidly following threads on baby names for 6 months now and have read the baby name books too, so if the name exists I most probably have seen it and discounted it due to my or Dh personal preference or doesn't go with surname, etc. (eg, I love Celeste, Dh doesn't!)
Re: ellesse sports brand, this doesn't.bother me as very different pronunciation and to be honest not very common round these parts.
Re: Evangeline, I am not bothered if a nickname is used by friends at school, etc, am more concerned if Dh and I will find too cumbersome to be used on a daily basis as hate to shorten it when still a baby/toddler.
Any others with 4 syllable names for your DC that still use the full version?

Elise

Please don't saddle the poor mite with Evangeline, it makes me think of a aged cross dresser for some reason (some old bloke called Ernest in a flowery frock and a bad wig) - Sorry :(

Elise is lovely and goes well with your surname and your other daughters name.

Came across a little girl called Ellis the other day too which I thought was nice, but again said with the wrong Scottish accent could sound like a pan loaf version of Alice...

I also know an Elisa (el ees ah) and an Alessia but you may not want two names ending in "a" i guess.

I have never heard the name Seren before but is does sound really different from your other choices - I can't honestly decide whether I like it or not, but all that matter is that you do - though I have to say that you can say it really quickly with your surname and it sounds a bit like it could be a town in Eastern Europe, Serenkerr Confused

amck5700 · 02/07/2012 21:59

...sorry, just noticed that i misread your daughters name as Amellia, so they wouldn't both end in "a"

I love Evangeline. Especially will a one syllable surname.

I am Scottish and when I say Evangeline Kerr it sounds mellifluous and rather lovely.

Would worry Evangeline would be Vange or Gelli by the time she was 12!! I like Elise and it goes well with Amelie which is French .. what about Eliane?

hellymelly · 02/07/2012 22:12

Seren Anna would be very odd, like Serenanna, so I wouldn't go for that combo. I like Elise though. (Also am Welsh, so think using a Welsh language name with no Welsh background is a bit odd but that's just my personal view.) Why not Anna as a first name? It is such a lovely classic name.

Ohmydarlin · 02/07/2012 22:36

Serena or Seraphine would be lovely alternatives to Seren and Evangeline. I wouldn't use Elsie if you've already given dd1 Elizabeth as a middle name.

cashmere · 02/07/2012 23:37

Evangeline is lovely. Lina would be a possible nickname or Angie but not as pretty. I also like Eve as a nickname as opposed to Eva.

I like Elise too but prefer Evangeline.

I also like Seren but it still feels too Welsh- seems very popular though so this may change rapidly.

Your boys name sounds familiar!!!

ScrambledSmegs · 02/07/2012 23:51

Hmm at Evangeline being 'shortened' to Gelli! There's a nn we never considered (thank god!).

OP, as you asked so nicely Grin - my DD is called Evangeline. Yes, it gets shortened, as little children struggle to say it, but it gets shortened to Evie by her friends, not 'Gelli'! I know Eva/Evie/Eve are considered too popular on MN, but we like it and she can say it quite happily (2yo).

Even the Queen had her name shortened to Lilibet as a child, as she couldn't say Elizabeth, so I wouldn't worry about long names getting shortened. You're in good company Wink

suziez · 03/07/2012 04:47

Evangeline is beautiful, any or all names will be lengthened or shortened, either by the child itself or by it's mates..they are all beautiful names but I prefer Evangeline most. It does sound like angel, which is right and fitting

TheWave · 03/07/2012 14:25

Like Elise. I know a 15 year old Evangeline and her friends call her that and not nn. Also like it.

JoanDarc · 03/07/2012 19:50

Am delighted to see some more votes for Evangeline, this was our 1st choice throughout the 1st pregnancy when we changed to Amelie with a couple of weeks to go. (which i still love) Think this may be the top one for me now, possibly Evangeline Seren, but think dh more keen on Anna as middle name.
ScrambledSmegs thanks for your comments, lovely to here from someone with a dd already named it. Do you find it cumbersome to use on a daily basis? Am concerned I may find it too long to use in everyday situations, but think it is just a case of getting used to it.

I like Elise and Seren the best and agree with everyone that Evangeline will definately be shortened whether you like it or not.

ScrambledSmegs · 03/07/2012 22:58

Well, tbh we use Evie too as it's just simpler for a 2 yo to comprehend. But I do regularly tell her that her 'best' name is Evangeline, and I think it's sinking in. I do want to use it as her everyday name but I guess that's really up to her!

ceeveebee · 03/07/2012 23:06

I think Evangaline sounds a bit try hard. Sorry

Elise is my favourite. Or Elisa/Eliza?

Fireandashes · 04/07/2012 23:31

Evangeline is a beautiful name, one of my favourites. Elise pretty too. I like Seren but not sure if it goes quite so well with Kerr.

baskingseals · 05/07/2012 07:21

I know an Angelica whose nickname is Jelly, and it sounds really nice.
if it helps I have an Alexandra, who is always Alexandra. she does have a nickname that isn't Alex or Lexi, which may have helped though.

if i were you i would go with Evangeline. it really is pretty.
i also know an Evalina, who is always Evalina. my small boys tend to call her Leena, which again is pretty.

congratulations Grin
