Nicknames for Eloise

that aren't Ellie or Ella?

I love the name Eloise, and DH is keen too (this in itself is a bit of a miracle Grin) but am a bit put off by the worry that they would inevitably be called Ellie or Ella. I don't dislike Ellie and Ella but there are sooo many of them.

Any ideas for what else could Eloise be shortened to that isn't too tenuous?

My middle name is Louise & I get called Loulou sometimes.

squoosh · 26/06/2012 16:05

It's going to be Ellie. Even if you try to be a bit 'desist immediately from calling my child Ellie', it will be Ellie.

I'm sorry.

squoosh · 26/06/2012 16:07

Although you could try and make Lo stick at a push.

oreocrumbs · 26/06/2012 16:09

My friend Elouise gets 'weesy' or worm, as in weesy worm - no idea where that came from, but her parents call her that too Confused.

I do think that anything that starts with an El is going to get Elle, Ellie, Ella etc.

suzikettles · 26/06/2012 16:12

Lola, Loulou. Ermm, apart from the El ones that's about it.

minipie · 26/06/2012 16:13

hmmm

drat.

maybe we'll just carry on calling her Sprog like we do at the moment.

I like Loulou but would it actually stick or would she just end up being Ellie anyway?

BellaOfTheBalls · 26/06/2012 16:13

Lois?

minipie · 26/06/2012 16:28

Hmmm, Lois doesn't fit so well sound-wise with Eloise though obviously it does letter-wise.

If we call her Lou or Loulou will everyone else follow suit, or will they just call her Ellie...

Elsie?

minipie · 26/06/2012 16:37

Elsie's ok - bit more unusual than Ellie - though a bit oldladyish for me. How about Elsa although it does make me think of the Nazi baddie woman in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Lou Lou sticks, trust me! My childminder's whole family used to affectionately call DD 'name' Lou laa (name begins with L) and I still sometimes call her Lou. She's 25 Smile

minipie · 26/06/2012 17:11

mm - would it still stick if name began with E not L though married?

My DD is Eloise and I know another two little girls called Eloise. All three of them are called Eloise, and their names are not generally shortened. My DD is sometimes called Ella (but this is mostly at gym where there is another Eloise and it helps to distinguish them). She is never called Ellie. I think there are so many children called Ellie or Ella that most people tend not to shorten Eloise because that would only add to the confusion.

I have taught several Eloises over the years, and I have only known one girl who has shortened it. Everyone else has been known by their full name.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 26/06/2012 23:31

Eloise generally doesn't get shortened. If it does it is generally to Elle.

I have one friend who has always called my weezy.

I am a grown up one. My dh calls me El. Everone else calls me Eloise or El. The only person who is allowed to call me Ellie is my MiL as it is a term of endearment rather than a nickname anyone else who attempts it gets the stabby glare and cease forthwith.

Tbh I've found it's one of those names where people ask if you shorten it rather than automatically shortening it, iyswim?

mumnosbest · 26/06/2012 23:35

If you dont shorten her name i dont think people will unless she chooses to later. My niece has a long name easily shortened to quite a common name but nobody has ever shortened it and shes 16.
if you want a nickname go for louis (low-is), elle, lola, louis (loo-ee) or lou

minipie · 27/06/2012 11:58

Thanks all. That's interesting about it not getting shortened.

I'm happy with it not getting shortened at all or her being called El (guessing that would be more when she's older probably). It's really just Ellie I'm keen to avoid...!

I guess my concern is prompted by my Dad saying "well if you call her that I'm just going to call her Ellie as Eloise is a real mouthful" Hmm moral of the story is probably that I shouldn't discuss potential names with my parents!

BobbiFleckman · 27/06/2012 12:03

my Eloise doesn't get shortened at all. She has a pal called Eloisa whose mother does call her Ellie.
It's not really a mouthful kind of name though - hardly Iphegenia / triple syllable awkward

WineOhWhy · 27/06/2012 12:06

My DD knows one. She is usually called Eloise, sometimes Lo-Lo. Never Ellie. I think Lola could work

whatinthewhatnow · 27/06/2012 12:23

my dd is eloise and is always eloise, or, randomly, the beezer, the beesknees, or squeeze. Never ellie (bleurgh), ella or anything else. Nobody else has ever tried to shorten it I think because we don't. the only prob is lots of people think she's Louise. well, when I say lots I mean old ladies.

SandyBottoms · 27/06/2012 12:46

The first nn I thought of was 'Lou' but Eloise is lovely as a whole, why shorten it?

minipie · 27/06/2012 17:32

I wouldn't choose to shorten it Sandy but thought others inevitably would... seems not!

SandyBottoms · 27/06/2012 17:41

It's beautiful. Tell your dad it's Eloise or nothing!

smokinaces · 27/06/2012 17:50

My sister is Eloise. For years growing up she was Lou. Then she decided she would be ellie when she was a teenager - and I think she uses ellie all the time, her fb profile, work etc. She probably has friends who don't realise what ellie stands for.

scentednappyhag · 27/06/2012 17:52

I'd shorten it to Lo if I met a hypothetical Eloise.
