Hi, DH and I are expecting a boy in September, we have decided he will be either Mikey or Martin. Would love some opinions please...

Mikey for Michael?

Ridiculousrick · 14/06/2012 22:29

Just Mikey.

Mikey would be ok as a nickname and if we were americans living in the 70's.
Martin is ok.

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 22:33

i like both, but i'm leaning a teeny bit toward Martin simply because it's so underused right now

tethersend · 14/06/2012 22:34

LOVE Mikey; would have called DD2 that if she'd been a boy. In fact, I still might.

BellaOfTheBalls · 14/06/2012 22:35

I would go for Martin personally only because I cannot stand nicknames used as first names.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 14/06/2012 22:35

Mikey makes me think of New Kids on the Block

much prefer Martin/Marty

MarySA · 14/06/2012 22:36

Well Mikey is OK as a short form for Michael. But not as a name on its own. There's nothing wrong with Martin but it doesn't appeal much to me.

Ridiculousrick · 14/06/2012 22:37

That really made me laugh MSD, hasn't put me off as I really love it!

Mikey is very cute for a little boy - a tad ridiculous in 30 odd years times when he's MD of a multinational company. But hey, each to their own - you're not the one who'll have to live with the name.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 14/06/2012 22:56

I guess Mikey could be shortened to Mike in years to come

TuesdayNightClub · 14/06/2012 23:03

Martin wins hands down. I like the name Michael very much but just 'Mikey' is pretty bad, I'm sorry.

StepOutOfSpring · 14/06/2012 23:10

Martin, definitely. Sensible and classic, but if you want a nickname you could have Marty for short.

WithACherryOnTop · 14/06/2012 23:33

Martin is very nice.

Mikey isn't.

PercyFilth · 15/06/2012 00:52

Love Michael but Mikey is a no-no. So Martin gets my vote.

Stellan · 15/06/2012 13:01

Martin.

Mikey is really not a good choice for a grown man... Wouldn't you rather name him Michael or Micah so he has some options as he grows?

Martin is a fine, solid and sensible name and you don't hear of too many baby Martins these days.

Littlecherublegs · 15/06/2012 13:03

Dont like either though if I had to choose, I'd go for Martin.

Michael is much better than Mikey though and then I'd choose that!

nbee84 · 15/06/2012 13:05

As Stellan says - Mikey might sound like a reasonable name for a child but as an adult it is not great. It has a childish ring to it and wouldn't sound very professional if your ds grew up to be a doctor/architect/solicitor/scientist etc

And people will always say "Mikey, is that short for Michael?"

Florin · 15/06/2012 13:09

A grown man will not want to be called Mikey. Imagine him as a doctor or lawyer and being introduced, in the business world it would be so embarassing stuck with that name. Why not call him Michael on his birth certificate and then call him Mikey then as he grows up he can decide if he wants to be called Mikey/Mike/Michael

Frontpaw · 15/06/2012 13:09

I do know a Mikey (don't ask how but its short for Zachary). He is in the US and it is a cute name for a toddler. I expect he will want to be Zac when he is older.

We also have a Mike, who is Mikey (also in the US) when his wife wants him to do something.

gnocci · 15/06/2012 13:28

If the only other option is "mikey" then I'd say martin.

Michael on bc with nn of mikey, yes, actual name mikey? Er no.

ThisAintKansas · 15/06/2012 13:29

Mikey on its own is a no-no for me. Too cutesy wootesy. So Martin.

Michael is lovely, though.

TodaysAGoodDay · 15/06/2012 13:30

Mikey is terrible. Definately Martin.

ivykaty44 · 15/06/2012 13:32

Is this Mikey or Mickey?
