Have you ever heard of this name? How would you pronounce it? What would you think of a boy named Caio?

I'm trying to figure out if it is a possible name in the UK or if I should just give up...

i know a caio. pronounced ki,oh
More of a welsh name?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/06/2012 18:35

I read it as "chow" like the pretentious word for "goodbye".

StrawberryMojito · 12/06/2012 18:37

Definitely thinking Italian goodbye.

strawberrypenguin · 12/06/2012 18:41

Yep Italian goodbye. How's it meant to be said?

MagdalenaAlec · 12/06/2012 18:46

Caio makes me think of Caius, a bit transformed, but that is probably because I have been going through baby names books for a month now.. ;)

The Italian word for goodbye is "ciao", I did not make the connection but it might be a little confusing, yes.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/06/2012 18:47

Exactly, your eyes just re-sort the vowels.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 12/06/2012 18:51

Kai-oh. I know a fella called Caio. It suits him, but I think he gets away with it on account of being Brazilian.

BellaOfTheBalls · 12/06/2012 18:53

Kai-Oh. Although I think people would rearrange the vowels and call him Ciao!

It sounds a little but made up to my uneducated ear!

StepOutOfSpring · 12/06/2012 19:30

Too similar to Ciao... Italian goodbye.

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 19:39

Funny, I never thought of the association with the Italian word "Ciao" But it's good to know so many people thought of that...

It is pronounced ki,oh

I think the equivalent name in English would be Gaius.

And Fuckersnail you've hit the nail on the head: we are Brazilian :)

OP posts:
FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 12/06/2012 19:45

Ah. But if you are Brazilian then surely it's grand to name your child with a Brazilian name?

The Caio I know has had no problem with pronounciation that I know of here in Ireland. And don't Irish people (ime) who live abroad often call their children ridiculous, unpronouncable things like Siobhan and Caoimhe?

All in all, Caio is a nice name:)

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 19:59

Thanks, Fuckersnail I agree that there's nothing wrong naming our child a Brazilian name, but we are looking for something that would work in as many languages as possible and be as easy to say/write as possible. DS1 is Jonas, for example.

On top of that, they have/will have two family names (double barreled but not hyphenated) which is already confusing - and both of them are a mouthful. So we want at least the first name to be simple :)

(shame, though, as I like Caio and Gaius, but the second one doesn't work well back home)

I LOVE this name- It's pretty common in Wales. Kai-oh. It's a lovely name. :)

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 12/06/2012 20:07

I know what you mean - best to create as little difficuulty as possible, right? :) When are you due? I am due in November and currently trying to decide on names with DH and trying not to kill each other!

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 20:23

November as well!

Finding a name for DS1 was a nightmare so I don't expect it will be any easier this time! What names are you considering, Snail? (if you don't mind sharing)

FfoFfycsecs is it written the same way? Caio?

OP posts:
FfoFfycsecs · 12/06/2012 20:24

Yes! Exactly the same (there's another spelling, too- Cayo- But that's pronounced more kay-oh)

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 12/06/2012 21:35

Oh, sure we have loads of time so:)

We're not finding out the sex, just to make it more difficult for ourselves... Maybe Lila or Juliet for a girl, but we're stumped for a boy. I like Lucas, DH doesn't. Um...that's it!

With DS, we just came across a name and we both liked it immediatley, and that was that. I think with the second, it's harder because the names have to sound 'right' together too.

Interesting about it being common in Wales! I was thinking the likes of Kai must be popular, so perhaps Caio isn't such a big leap from that too.

mybootsaremuddy · 12/06/2012 21:40

I know a lovely little lad with it spelt Kaio (he lives in NZ).

Think it looks better spelt Caio though.

EdithWeston · 12/06/2012 21:46

I would pronounce it Ky-oh, but imagine as it is a sight rhyme for the singer, it could well come out as Kay-oh

schroedingersdodo · 12/06/2012 22:54

Snails we decided we won't choose any name before the baby is born, so we have several months ahead obsessing about names.

Lucas is in our list. But it sounds a bit boring to me, as it's too popular in Brazil. If you don't have any Brazilian connection, then I think it's a good option.

I like Lila and Juliet, but I think I prefer Juliet.

It's interesting to know it's popular in Wales. I like the spelling Caio, more than Kaio or Cayo. And Kay-oh doesn't bother me.

I'll keep it in the secondary list, then. Not as one of the favourites, but still as an option :)

I used to teach a Kaeyo pronounced Kai yo, he was lovely!

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 13/06/2012 10:05

I like the idea of waiting to choose a name until you se the baby, i may suggest it to DH. With Ds, when he came out, DH said 'Hello x' and it felt weird. He is his name now and couldn't be anything else, but it took a couple of weeks to get used to. What other names do you like?

duchesse · 13/06/2012 10:11

I misread it as Ciao the first three times. Suspect that might happen a lot.

How about Caius? (pronounced Cay-us rather than Keys)

schroedingersdodo · 13/06/2012 16:03

Snail we did that with DS1, it took us so long to decide on a name that after 8 months we agreed we would wait to see his face. He spent about a week nameless and then we slowly got used to it. It was weird, but after a while we couldn't see him as anything but his name.

So far the front runner has been Linus, but we still have plenty of time to change our minds...

duchesse I don't love the ending "us" - but if we go for it, we're more likely to go for Linus.

There is a boy at DD's pre-school called Kiyo which I presume is pronounced the same.
