hi, i'm new to mumsnet (29 weeks pregnant with 3rd baby). have noticed you all give great advice on names - so was wondering........

dh is dead set on the former; i'm not sure. also, any reasons why you would prefer one to the other?

many thanks, clara x

I think I prefer Gabriella as you've got more nn options (Gabby or Ella). Also as Gabriella is more popular if she's a Gabrielle know as Gabby people may assume her full name is Gabriella. Both are lovely though.

MsOliveOyl · 07/06/2012 14:28

I like Gabriella best. No particular reason though!

Lunarlyte · 07/06/2012 14:40

Both are lovely - a determining factor for me would be your surname; obviously you may not want to post this on MN.

Say each name aloud with your surname. I think that might help you decide. (FWIW Gabriella would go best with mine!)

GooseRocks · 07/06/2012 14:41

Gabrielle for me. To many syllables in Gabriella!

underthevalley · 07/06/2012 15:45

Don't know why but Gabriella

SwedishMumInLondon · 07/06/2012 15:47

Definitely Gabriella

WineOhWhy · 07/06/2012 15:49

Gabriella

Gabrielle may be confused iwth boy's name Gabriel?

StepOutOfSpring · 07/06/2012 16:22

Gabriella - it has a more flowing sound.

AnnaFender · 08/06/2012 01:23

Noooo, I like Gabrielle! It is girly enough without making it an -ella name. Also, I prefer Elle to Ella as a nn.

SwedishEdith · 08/06/2012 01:42

Oh, Gabrielle definitely. Classier.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 08/06/2012 01:48

Gabrielle, it's prettier - also the Xena associations do it for me Grin while Gabriella is High School Musical.

MarkGruffalo · 08/06/2012 01:53

Gabriella

Gabrielle is the name of that pirate singer

AndWhenYouGetThere · 08/06/2012 12:53

Gabrielle, because I prefer nickname Elle by far to Gaby/Ella and feel like Elle can translate to an adult nicname well.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 08/06/2012 12:53

*nickname

Lunarlyte · 08/06/2012 14:29

Agree about the 'Elle' NN and I'm Grin at Gruffalo's comments!

minipie · 08/06/2012 14:57

Gabrielle

Gabriella has too many syllables for me.

pinkyrabbit · 08/06/2012 16:12

I like Gabrielle better - seems more feminine. Gabriella seems harsher and yes, has too many syllablles for me too really. x

pinkclara · 10/06/2012 20:35

thanks everyone;
lunarlyte, i've been saying it aloud for about a week now and gabriella sounds better with our surname.........................................
just need a middle name now, which is difficult as like pinkyrabbit says it does have a lot of syllables!

Gabriella - i just think it's adorable and flows really well!

As for a middle name, they wont be said together very often Wink

JaneaneGruffalo · 11/06/2012 00:34

lunarlyte Thanks for laughing (i usually only find myself funny) Tragically I have even been sad enough to find out what me hearties actually sings in that song. Apparently tis: Dreams can come true Look at me babe I'm with you You know you gotta have hope You know you gotta be strong....Now I obviously need my ears cleaning out cos I don't hear at least half a dozen.

I digress

clara How about a one syllable middle name then? Smile

Gabriella Rose
Gabriella Claire

sanserif · 11/06/2012 00:44

Well I'm going with Gabrielle. It's already quite long and the 'a' makes it that one syllable longer without IMHO adding much. Gabrielle is a strong name, I feel like Gabriella weakens it a bit and doesn't go as well with additional names and surnames.

gabbyyyyyyyyy · 04/05/2020 14:01

@JaneaneGruffalo lol my name is gabrielle and my middle name is claire

midsomermurderess · 04/05/2020 14:38

Gabrielle. With an 'a' it's the wrong side of flouncy.

MikeUniformMike · 04/05/2020 14:39

Not keen on either really. Gabrielle seems a bit 1970s. usually Gaby, and Gabriella is too long so she'll end up being Gaby or Ella.
There are lots of Ella names around.

midsomermurderess · 04/05/2020 14:56

I've come across Gabita as a shortening. It's Spanish I think. I prefer that to Gaby.
