Do your children's names match?

I came across sisters called Eve and Hannah the other day and thought that was quite a novel approach to matching sibling names.

Anyway with DC2 on the way it got me thinking about the influence of DS's name on the name for the new one. How much consideration do you think needs to be making your children sound like they are related?

Doesn't their surname indicate that they are related???? People over think the sibling thing in my opinion, they will live apart longer than they will live together.

bamboozledAardvark · 04/06/2012 14:59

Well I don't think you'd be able to name siblings Harry and Henry or John and Jack for example, but aside from not actually having variants of the same name I don't think it matters. My DC have very dissimilar names but everyone will still know they're related because they look pretty similar and have the same surname!

mnistooaddictive · 04/06/2012 15:03

My dc have completely different names because they are individuals.

Meglet · 04/06/2012 15:07

No.

Psammead · 04/06/2012 15:12

I think it would be odd to have, for example Kimberly, Megan, Lexi and Mildred. I mean, Mildred would just feel like the odd one out, wouldn't she? But in general, people's personal taste stop this from happening so it's not an issue.

I think when people ask for names which 'match' those of their other children, they are basically wanting to hear names others consider to appeal to their taste.

twofurryones · 04/06/2012 15:12

Right then, I was just idly wondering about this but clearly all those threads about what 'goes' with DC1's names were written by invading netsmummers Wink

Oh and surely not all siblings have the same surname or look like each other.

Btw, am I being really thick? What's with Eve and Hannah?

JubileeTatWearer · 04/06/2012 15:15

None at all.

DC1's name is long and French.

DC2's name is short and British.

They suit their names perfectly.

JubileeTatWearer · 04/06/2012 15:16

They're palindromes, Psammead (took me a while).

twofurryones · 04/06/2012 15:18

Psammead You just answered me before I typed very impressive Smile

I have no idea what to call DC2 but I guess we'll just work it out when s/he gets here. DS has a pretty run of the mill name and DH is very boring so it's unlikely it'll be anything outlandish so they will undoubtably be from a similar genre.

Really though I'm just very impressed at the parents of the sisters having such dedication to pallindromes!

In the park the other day I met Mitchell and his baby brother Maxwell. Nice names on their own, but I couldn't help think that they will be shortened to Mitch 'n' Max! Which I'm sure their lovely parents did not intend.

Psammead · 04/06/2012 15:24

Aah, yes, obviously. Was just testing .

twofurryones · 04/06/2012 15:28

PTA that is funny, I know siblings Ben & Jen, and was a bit surprised about rhyming names until I realised they are actually called Benjamin and Jennifer and it probably never crossed their parents mind.

I do wonder what the pallindrome lovers would have called a boy. The only name I can think of is Otto.

Bob?

MinnieBar · 04/06/2012 15:38

Not matching as such, but DS's initial can be changed to DD1's initial quite easily, and DD1's to DD2's without too much trouble. So nice and easy for school jumpers Grin

Jins · 04/06/2012 15:39

I knew twins called Eve and Pandora which has stuck with me as a matching set of names

RustyBear · 04/06/2012 15:40

MIL always claimed she gave DH and SIL the same initials so they could share name labels. I'd have thought she was joking, but she didn't really have a sense of humour...

Psammead · 04/06/2012 15:40

Minnie - F, E and B? Grin

Psammead · 04/06/2012 15:45

Hmm. DD is an L. To save label headaches we should find a name for Dc2 which starts with B,C,D,E,G,I,O or U. So far we have Francesca, Felicity and Penelope on the list. Bollocks.

Tannhauser · 04/06/2012 15:47

Could be I, L, and E! Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/06/2012 15:48

Or F, P and B? Grin

I have three cousins whose names do not match at all. I won't give their real names here, but they are half Hungarian, one quarter English and one quarter German. The girls are Ildiko Zsuzsanna and Margit Terez and the boy is Kevin Eric. Quite, quite bonkers.

happywheezer · 04/06/2012 15:49

I know somebody who has an A for Ava
B for Blake
C for Chloe

I think they have 10 children too and are a bit weird because they live in a windmill.

MrsRhettButler · 04/06/2012 15:50

My dd's names actually rhyme! Angry dp's fault not mine, I I hate it!

MinnieBar · 04/06/2012 15:51

O - P - A!

Ok, the last requires a bit more creativity with a biro, but it's doable.

We didn't plan it, honest. On the downside, DH got me an otherwise lovely bracelet with their and his initials on.

It spells 'S-O-A-P' Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/06/2012 15:54

It could have been worse, MinnieBar. It could have been re-arranged to read P-O-A-S... Grin
