If you could have chosen YOUR OWN name (first and or surname) -what would you have gone for?

I've never really liked my name - surname is OK but not a fan of my first name. I often flirt with the idea of changing it (has anyone ever successfully done that?) or assuming a pen name.
Inspired by the lovely double barrelled surname thread below - what would you like to have called yourself..?
I like the surnames:
Bloomfield - just sounds so inviting!
Russian sounding names - ending in vich or kov

I think my names ok. I didn't like it when I was young but an quite happy with it now. My surname is a long very unusual one, and even though I have to spell it out every time I love it. Will be changing it when I get majored though... Will be a bit sadSad

ivanapoo · 03/06/2012 14:47

I think animal surnames are cool - Fox, Swan, Lyons, Bird, that kind of thing. I've always thought Emilia Fox had an awesome name.

I really like trad first name surnames too like James, Charles or Henry.

ladyinthelibrary · 03/06/2012 14:53

PrettyInDecadence I have chosen almost the same name as you! I used to have delusions of grandeur sign myself into places as Maria (my middle name) Montgomery-Smythe. Hate my first name which always get spelt wrong, my maiden name and my married name. If anything, I would go to my gran's maiden name which is Taylor .... I often ask people what first name I look as though I should have, but without much success!

SiioCal · 03/06/2012 15:20

Same here badge !! I love my new surname only got married last year and I still love the sound of it !!
My first name is fairly unusual but not so unusual that it's weird iykwam ? The only negative is the spelling is not remotely phonetic so I have a life of having to spell my name . I do love it tho it's much better than my sisters mug to her annoyance Grin

SiioCal · 03/06/2012 15:23

Oh tits I'm currently brewing dc2 and if I have another DD it's fairly likely she will be a Charlotte .

Janoschi · 03/06/2012 18:47

I really like my weird alliterating name but if I changed it, I'd like either:

Phlox Barraclough
Patricia Barraclough

MagdalenaAlec · 03/06/2012 18:59

It would be nice if I could change my first name (I cannot, I am French too)!!
I have an hyphenated FN (Sophie-Magdalena) and I took my husband's name when I got married, which unfortunately is double barrelled... lots of dashes on my passport.
As a result I use only Magdalena and DH's stage name which can sometimes get confusing for people.

I would have loved to be an Elizabeth too!

TidyDancer · 03/06/2012 19:03

I love my own name. My surname I didn't like growing up, but I've made my peace with it now. Grin

I wouldn't change either now.

TidyDancer · 03/06/2012 19:03

(will change it when married to DP, but that's about it)

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 03/06/2012 19:05

I like my first name. My surname is a bit shit, and unfortunatley DH's surname is almost identical to mine. I told him I didn't want to change my name because it's MY name, but I would have definitley at least went double barreled if his name was nicer than mine!

HandMadeTail · 03/06/2012 19:09

DH says he would like to be Dirk Thrust

I would be Princess Consuela Bananahammock

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 03/06/2012 19:09

Oh I love the name Magdalena! I'd like it for next dc if it's a girl but DP says no.

LemonTurd · 03/06/2012 19:10

Pandygirl that's nearly the Queen's name, she's Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Smile

Tits I would love the name Charlotte Envy

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 03/06/2012 19:14

Nancy Loren.
Love the name Nancy and if I had Loren as a surname people might think they can see a family resemblance between me and Sophia.
If they squint.
A lot.

MagdalenaAlec · 03/06/2012 19:32

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow: then you'd better like the nn "Magda" because 99% of the people your daughter will meet will not even try the full version! I tried to fight it at first (with DH's family) but when we moved to the US I gave up and compromised with Lena/Leni.. but every time someone calls me like this I just feel like a 6 yo being shout out in the park.

PrettyInDecadence · 03/06/2012 20:06

ladyinthelibrary Montgomery definitely has a sense of grandeur about it, doesn't it?

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 03/06/2012 22:19

I don't like Magda as much, I just think Magdalena has an elegance about it. I like lena though. I also associate the name with a lovely lady I used to work with, we never shortened it there. All my American cousins call me an abreviation of my name that nobody has ever called me, it seems to be the done thing over there!

lilyliz · 03/06/2012 22:33

Pretty nothing grand about that name where I live, common as muck as they say. When I was young, really young like under 10 I would pick names I wished I'd been called and tell everyone that was my name now egs are Hemionne, cassandra, wilhelmina and because I thought she was the lovliest person I'd ever seen Nyree Dawn Porter. Now I am happy with my ordinary first and surname.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 05/06/2012 01:27

Ahh.
Lara de Winter.
Harper Lee.
Alex(andra) Darcy

No inspiration from books then :)

Popoozle · 05/06/2012 23:09

I used to wish I was called Chloe. Back in the 1980's when everyone seemed to have my name (Emma), and Chloe was still very rare.

My favourite surnames have always been Vaughan and Llewelyn (no idea why, I just like the sounds) so Chloe Vaughan or Chloe Llewelyn.

NappiesandGladrags · 05/06/2012 23:15

I worked in a Nursing Home when at school - just in the evenings and at weekends now and then, in the kitchens etc and ever since i would love the name of the sweetest most courageous lady i have ver met and her name??

Queenie Plumtree

outstanding in my honest opinion - yep that name would do me nicely!

nurseneedshelp · 05/06/2012 23:24

My first name is "Lee" and i'm female but because its spellt so stupidly i'm often mistaken as a boy??!!

I sometimes introduce myself to older patients at work as "Leah" because I cant be arsed to explain it...

I was going to be called "Star" wtf??? Thank goodness my lovely dad refused to go along with it " Nurse Star" my colleagues would really think I was taking the michael!!!!

telsa · 05/06/2012 23:42

Knew someone with surname Rainbow once - love that name. That or Rose. First name Esmeralda

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 06/06/2012 00:45

nurseneedshelp for what it's worth I'd love to have had your name!
Also, FWIW, Lee Radziwill was beautiful!

Lannie33 · 06/06/2012 03:25

i wanted to be Claire or Sarah when I was little b/c my name was so unusual and ethnic. But now my name is so 'me', it's not the most beautiful sounding i've ever heart (in English) but it's not bad, it's a strong name and no one (i mean no one) knows any others, so I never ever have to say my last name. So overall not bad...a lot better than some of my siblings!!!!!
