I must admit, it did sound hilarious to me when I first heard of babies being called Mabel. I had to smother laughter the first few baby Mabels I met. But the hilarity is wearing off now. It's a nice enough name.

camsie · 25/05/2012 19:56

Nay from me.

SilverSky · 25/05/2012 19:56

Don't do it.

sleepdodger · 25/05/2012 20:02

I am sure if I ever met a child with this name I'd think it was a lovely child.
But I'dd also think their parents were slightly bonkers to have lumbered them with it!

CornishKK · 25/05/2012 20:23

Love it, don't love the May-belle suggestion though.

MoaningMicroraptorRoarsAgain · 25/05/2012 20:25

I love it. I would probably use NN Bella as well, so shoot me Grin

MoaningMicroraptorRoarsAgain · 25/05/2012 20:26

But DH ruled it out and hated it. I wanted Mabel last time but baby had a willy so it was a no.

pud1 · 25/05/2012 20:28

I LOVE IT. my dd has it as a middle name after my gran. Wish I had used it as her first names but I did not have the guts after all the negative comments I had before she was born.

PercyFilth · 25/05/2012 20:47

I like it. Yes, it is an "old granny" name, but prettier than most, and infinitely nicer than popular non-names like Tilly.

AhsataN · 14/06/2012 17:40

maybell is a flower

kitsonkittykat · 14/06/2012 17:41

I love Mabel. Its gorgeous.

passivehoovering · 14/06/2012 17:48

I love the name, DP and I liked it for our DD. Even though my Mum phoned me up and begged me not to use it we STILL really liked it.

However.

We said it out loud.

I have an Estuary accent, DPs is Yorkshire. It sounds really dreadful in both. DD is called something else :) It's something to do with the "le" sound I think.

Mum2Kaison · 14/06/2012 17:53

I like Mae-belle or Mai-bell.

clinkclink · 15/06/2012 14:44

Hate it, and, like the poster above, I laughed when I heard of a newborn being called this (not in front of the mum obviously!).

But I am 40 and the mums I know who are calling their kids this are in their 30s. I think it doesn't have the same connotations to younger mums.

EdithWeston · 15/06/2012 14:49

I'm not keen on Mabel, but think it's a perfectly good name.

3boysgirlontheway · 15/06/2012 14:57

Is Lily Cooper (Allen)'s DD called Mabel?

I like it, it is pretty.

MagdalenaAlec · 15/06/2012 15:43

I thought Lily Allen's dd was Ethel? love Ethel, btw.

I like how Mabel sounds, v pretty.

3boysgirlontheway · 15/06/2012 15:44

You are right she is Ethel, they are similar in my mind for some reason.

greenandcabbagelooking · 15/06/2012 15:45

I like it. Although it does remind me of the dog on Blue Peter.

PrettyPrinceofParties · 15/06/2012 15:55

Yes, I was thinking Blue Peter pet too. I like Ethel, I had an aunt called that who was always known as Ettie, which I think is lovely.

Papyrus · 15/06/2012 16:02

Expecting DC5 next month and if a girl she is going to be Mabel.

PercyFilth · 15/06/2012 17:23

There, you see, I heartily dislike Ethel. Mabel and Ethel may both be 'old lady' names, but for me Mabel sounds pretty and Ethel is ugly - sounds leathery like an old boot or tough gristly meat! I really dislike the -eth sound though (Beth, Ethan, Seth, ll those names) - rhymes with death :(
