Are Arthur or Iris mean?

They're my our favourites at the moment, but are they a bit too old-fashioned - like beyond cool?

Discuss.

Both lovely names

MissPricklePants · 20/05/2012 21:42

Both great names!

Allthesanityinme · 20/05/2012 21:43

Both great names, classic and cool I would say

Sarcalogos · 20/05/2012 21:44

Both great names.

jenbird · 20/05/2012 21:45

I love them both x

slacklucy · 20/05/2012 21:45

love Arthur, not so sure about Iris but recon it could grow on me.

Schmokeandapancake · 20/05/2012 21:46

Like them both but depends if you mind how popular they are-I know a fair few of both....

Booette · 20/05/2012 21:47

I love Arthur. Iris is not a name I'd choose, but it's not an awful name.

hatebeak · 20/05/2012 21:47

They both seem pretty popular at the moment, so I doubt they could be seen as mean.

Fuzzywood · 20/05/2012 21:48

Not mad keen on Arthur but don't think it's mean. Iris is lovely.

TartyMcFarty · 20/05/2012 21:50

Really? I hadn't heard of either. Impossible though, to find names that chime in with your own taste but aren't too popular.

I also like Seth or Annie.

Love Iris. Not at all keen on Arthur. But it isn't dreadful.

LemonTurd · 20/05/2012 21:57

I love Iris Smile

To me, 'mean' is miserly.

tummytickler · 20/05/2012 21:59

I have an 11 year old Iris - not cruel at all imo! Annie is lovely too - although I would use Anne and have Annie as a nn.
Really dislike Arthur. Not keen on old man names (I see the girls names as being a bit more classic for some reason). Not wild about Seth either, although both my sons have OT names, this is not one I like.

Lunarlyte · 20/05/2012 21:59

Errrrrrrm ... They aren't my taste as, in complete honesty, I think they do sound like elderly people's names. I have a very close friend who has a Florence and would like an Elsie and I'm like "yikes!" but would never say anythingto her.

Names such as these are having a Renaissance (Florence, Edie, Elsie, Albert, etc), so you are certainly not mean.

The names we chose for our girls get stick on MN for being too popular or even twee. Sometimes, I literally see venom on my iPhone screen ?lol? It's each to their own! x

Francagoestohollywood · 20/05/2012 22:00

I like both

Jaffacakeeater · 20/05/2012 22:02

These are both my top names! Sadly meanie DH says 3 dcs are enough.

exoticfruits · 20/05/2012 22:08

I don't like either but they are fashionable at the moment so are not mean.

joanofarchitrave · 20/05/2012 22:14

Not at all mean but you might find there are a few around. Unlikely to be more than 1 in a class though IMO, and really, it doesn't matter. Iris is particularly lovely.

Iris

TartyMcFarty · 20/05/2012 22:20

Oh, I love Elsie Smile

Lovely link joan, thanks.

My daughter has a friend called Iris...it;s a lovely name. Her friends call her Iggy!

Clary · 21/05/2012 00:24

Mean people or mean names to give a child Grin

Neither actually. DD has two twins she gets on sooo well with and one is Iris, the only Iris I know actually but flower names are trendy in general so it works well alongside the Violets and Lilys.

Arthur is a great name Grin as I always post. It's old-fashioned but of course is coming back in alongside Stanley and Edwin and Albert. I know one 12yo Arthur, one who is about 6 and one who is a baby. It's not so very out there.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 21/05/2012 00:32

I know two Iris' and three Arthur's under 5, so I think they're too popular to be 'mean'.

They are old fashioned, but then so are Elsie, Edie, Maud, Stanley, Albert, Alfie, Archie etc and I know at least one of each of those under 5 as well.

Personally I think Iris is awful. Quite like Arthur.

emmyloo2 · 21/05/2012 08:44

They are both gorgeous. Arthur is one of my favourites for DS2 should I have one. Iris doesn't fit with our surname which starts with an "s" but it is lovely name. I think both are great!

NenNen · 21/05/2012 08:56

Love them both! Iris is a gorgeous name. I wanted this for DD1 but mean DH said no!
