Hello Oh Wise Mumsnetters!

Would love some opinions on the names Rocky and Hudson. If we call our DS3 (9 weeks to go!!!) Rocky are we setting him up for ridicule???? Me and DH love it.....but just unsure.....!
Is Hudson too 'American' (we live in UK).....
After having 2 DD's we are struggling for boys names!!! Help!

Awful. Just awful.

MadameMessy · 20/05/2012 13:49

No sorry. They are really dreadful

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 20/05/2012 13:50

There is a Hudson at my DCs school, he's in the nursery or reception (they lump them together in Foundation Stage) and people judge. And Rocky is just too naff for words, he'll either get Stallone jokes or chocolate biscuit jokes all his life.

Are you considering Doris and Day for a girl?

Rocky is setting him up somewhat. If he isn't a "tough guy" it'll seem incongruous, and I would kind of expect "Rocky" to be some sort of dog rather than a human! Hudson is probably easier to live with.

To be honest you're not going to get a good reception for either of them on here, they aren't very "mumsnet" names. If you care what other people think of your name choices enough to post, maybe choose something a bit less out of the ordinary? I think you'd need to really really love Rocky or Hudson to deal with the raised eyebrows etc (though it does depend where you live, they would be okay where I live).

What are your other two boys called? It is really hard to think of something for boys as the most popular names seem REALLY popular.

zxcv123 · 20/05/2012 14:22

I think I would assume Rocky was a nickname, not a real name. Perhaps you could give him another name (Richard, Robert, Robin?) and use Rocky as a nn when he's small?

Hudson sounds very American to me, as the Yanks seem to love surnames as first names. It'd probably end up getting shortened to Hud.

What are your DDs called? Then perhaps we could suggest some similar names.

jkklpu · 20/05/2012 14:24

Hudson is Upstairs Downstairs butler.
Rocky just too awful. Sorry.

WomanvFood · 20/05/2012 14:26

hmm am sensing a dislike for these then! lol...

I just cannot use a 'run of the mill' name..... too many Jakes, Jacks, Olivers and Alfies ...

A no to Skylar or Mohawk then.....?

What are your dds names so we can think what might match?

pjani · 20/05/2012 14:31

Hudson's fine I think. Just another surname being used as a first name. Rocky is a bit trickier in terms of him having a lot to live up to!

Bunbaker · 20/05/2012 14:32

I'm boring and don't like "out there" or "try too hard" names either. Part of it is because I have a very unusual name that I dislike.

Rocky immediately makes me think of the films and Hudson just isn't my cup of tea.

myalias · 20/05/2012 14:36

If you are famous then yes it rocks Smile but it sound too contrived.

WomanvFood · 20/05/2012 14:40

I can't say DD's names as they would totally out me!! But in any event i dont want to 'match' names iyswim?

Interesting responses though :)

What about something like Vincent nn Vinny? That's a "real" name but there's a motorbike connection I think and it can sound like a tough name but doesn't have to if you see what I mean. Not too popular either, he'd likely be the only one in the class...

templenewsam · 20/05/2012 14:46

Love rocky! Not keen on Hudson.

scottishmummy · 20/05/2012 14:48

rocky,as in squashed faced pugilist. ghastly
Hudson, as in gay romcom actor. trying too hard

1950sHousewife · 20/05/2012 14:48

Please, I beg you, take zxcv advice and make Rocky short for something. Its a fine nickname but a terrible, just awful real name. Even Rocco would be better.

As for Hudson, it's way too American for my tastes and if I was going to use it at least have a reason for it - i.e I liked the films of Rock Hudson or the Hudson River happens to be where we got engaged etc. But it's not awful like Rocky.

schroedingersdodo · 20/05/2012 16:32

Rocky Horror Show. A great name for a hunky guy in golden underwear.

tammy234 · 20/05/2012 16:45

I think Rocky would be a very cool nickname, perhaps for Rocco, Robert or Ricardo?

Mrsrobertduvall · 20/05/2012 16:46

Truly shocking.
And Vinny is terible too. Reminds me of a 50s aging rocker with slicked back hair.

scottishmummy · 20/05/2012 18:28

for me its vinny jones
ham actor hard nut
not a good association imo

cece · 20/05/2012 18:35

Victor is cool.

Iwantcandy · 20/05/2012 18:40

No one would take your Ds seriously. What if he wanted to become a judge or a doctor when he's older? Who'd go to dr rocky? If your like surname sounding hollywoodisg names what about Harrison?

Dennisukelele · 20/05/2012 18:43

I knew a grown up Rocky. He was a nice chap.

He had a baby called Alan. Grin

KoyKarp · 13/06/2012 17:06

My son is called Rocky, we have had a very positive reception and he loves his name... I think some posters people are very judgmental and will only be happy if you call your son Thomas, Charlie or Jack.
