Hello Oh Wise Mumsnetters!

Would love some opinions on the names Rocky and Hudson. If we call our DS3 (9 weeks to go!!!) Rocky are we setting him up for ridicule???? Me and DH love it.....but just unsure.....!
Is Hudson too 'American' (we live in UK).....
After having 2 DD's we are struggling for boys names!!! Help!

I love the name Hudson, but maybe that's because I have lived in the states. I know a little boy out there with this name, he gets called Hud for short very cool. Like the movie Hud with paul newman.

BelleTheBeatnik · 13/06/2012 17:31

What about Roscoe?

Rocky is a bit of a Marmite name. Don't let that put you off if you love it :) but I'd suggest using it as a nickname for something else, because it's quite 'out there'.

Hudson isn't to my taste but there's nothing wrong with it IMO. Congratulations btw :)

Smartino82 · 04/08/2013 20:22

Rocky is a fab name! If my baby is a boy it will be called Rocky. X

Queazy · 04/08/2013 22:34

I don't like either of them tbh. Rocky is particularly bad tho. I remember my mum wouldn't even let us name our hamster that when we were younger. Perhaps our loss tho - on the right little boy I'm sure it would suit just fine x

sonlypuppyfat · 04/08/2013 22:37

Rocky is a dogs name

Bowlersarm · 04/08/2013 22:41

Andrew Flintoff has a Rocky Smile. He must be about 5 ish now.

Anjou · 04/08/2013 22:42

It totally depends on where you live, what your surname is, what your other children are called, what sort of circles you mix in etc. 'Rocky' does have 1 obvious and several less obvious connotations, so the surnames Balboa, Road/Rhodes or Bullwinkle would probably mean this name is not for you! Smile How about Rocco (pretty well known Italian name) or Roque (Portuguese, pronounced 'Rocky').

Hudson doesn't make me raise an eyebrow. There are heaps of surnames-as-first-names, so I can't see this being deemed too 'out there'.

Congrats & good luck! Smile

Love rocky but wouldn't be brave enough to use it. Also like vining

kiwik · 04/08/2013 23:18

Not to my taste (and my Mum's dog is called Hudson), but they're not that outlandish.
Rocky is a bit nicknamey, and Hudson too surnamey for me.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 05/08/2013 07:06

I love unusual names...but rocky and Hudson are dreadful.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 05/08/2013 07:08

Argh!

Zombie thread

MrsEllsmore · 05/08/2013 08:29

I don't mind either actually but as I'm sure you will have worked out many people won't like them so you have to think about whether that bothers you our not.

Bowlersarm · 05/08/2013 09:45

Oh yes Blush. I wonder what they went with.......

caz05 · 05/08/2013 14:38

I like both but prefer rocky if I had to pick one.

Littlecherublegs · 05/08/2013 20:54

I quite like Hudson actually - I don't mind some surnamey names. I love Jackson for example!

Rocky on the other hand is awful! Rocco is slightly better.

ExtremeCouponQueen · 05/08/2013 21:09

I actually like both names. I prefer hudson out of the two.

Bowlersarm · 05/08/2013 21:11

ZOMBIE THREAD

May 2012 - he'll either be a Rocky or a Hudson by now, or he won't!

laravh · 05/08/2013 21:17

They're both ok as far as im concerned. Prefer Hudson, but that's because I know a very cute Hudson. Wouldn't bother me at all that its very American.
They're are far worse names in my opinion which I'm sure most mumsnetters would love

qazxc · 05/08/2013 21:17

Hudson or skylar would be my front runners. I think that rocky and mohawk have very strong connotations and would be better as nn.

formicadinosaur · 06/08/2013 16:39

Rocco?

formicadinosaur · 06/08/2013 16:42

Rocco is short for rochbert, a saint. Rocco is quite a common Italian name.

neveronsunday · 06/08/2013 16:46

Dennis

I know Rocky & baby Alan too GrinGrin

Although Alan must be about 15 by now I would have thought.

Small world etc.

thegreylady · 06/08/2013 19:12

Rocco could have nn Rocky

I have an ex named Rocky...it really has affected his job prospects as interviewers just plain haven't taken him seriously. On the back of spending years unable to get a better paid job, he ended up with really low self esteem. A name like Rocky really makes or breaks you.
