Humphrey - would you?

I saw a little boy at the park the other day called Humphrey. He was about 18 months and it really suited him. However it seems to be universally slated on here. Why? I really love it and would consider it for my DS2. I much prefer it to the constant Olivers, thomases, charlies, Finns etc that seem to pop up.

What do you think? Would a little Humphrey be beaten in the playground? And would it be embarassing to introduce yourself as a 14 year old Humphrey? Other names I like are Edward, theodore and Hugo. DS1 is george. George and Humphrey!! I like it!!

Well if you like it.... Go for it. ( just make sure he has karate lessons from a young age..... Grin )

Bearcrumble · 20/05/2012 06:53

I don't like the sound of the name - it sounds sort of bulbous if you know what I mean. Like an elephant that's started to melt.

Also the milk advert from the 70s.

LetsKateWin · 20/05/2012 07:05

I love Humphrey. I think I'd look like someone trying to be posh if I used it though. Smile

MrsSkinnyLegs · 20/05/2012 07:13

Humphrey's a brilliant name. It's on my shortlist Smile

shinyblackgrape · 20/05/2012 07:41

No - I don't like it. It sounds pompous but ungainly at the same time.

Also - what would nicknames be? Humphy? The Hump?

Flubba · 20/05/2012 07:47

I recently taught a 14yo Humphrey. He was very un-Humphrey-like but so sweet simply because he was called Humphrey.

Florin · 20/05/2012 07:51

I love the name however we weren't brave enough to use it because of other peoples reactions

Badgerina · 20/05/2012 09:38

It's a bit too ungainly for my tastes too. Also: HUMPY Hmm The other names you like are just lovely though Smile

poocatcherchampion · 20/05/2012 09:42

Love! Do it

Northey · 20/05/2012 09:46

Humpty, for a nickname, isn't too bad.

LynetteScavo · 20/05/2012 09:47

Humphrey is a brilliant name, but you have to be the right kind of person to suit it.

I love Hugo too, but it just didn't suit DS2, so we chose a different name.

Northey · 20/05/2012 09:48

It makes me think of a sort of rumply loveliness.

emmyloo2 · 20/05/2012 12:19

LynetteScavo - I remember you commented on my names posts from 2010 when I was naming my DS1 and I always loved your taste in names. What is your DS2 called if you don't mind me asking??

Mrsskinnylegs - what other names are on your list??

seems it's a love hate relationship. I was mentioning this little boy to a wife my a friend of my DH and she said "oh dear" when I mentioned his name was Humphrey but her taste in names is very very different to mine, so I took her dislike as a positive thing!

Hugo is lovely

shinyblackgrape · 20/05/2012 14:13

Emmy - I think your right te the love hate thing. It's not a horrible name it's just the incongruity of it on a small child. But that's world's issue - not little humph's!

MadameMessy · 20/05/2012 14:22

Humphrey reminds me of mothercare, don't they have a range called "Humphrey's Corner"? It's OK, not the worst. I do like Hugo though. Or Hugh

Northey · 20/05/2012 14:30

Pearl and Lily and so on used to seem incongruous for a small child, of course :)

I am becoming curiously attached to Humphrey and may have to file it away for my as yet unconceived child.

Stellan · 20/05/2012 16:54

The only Humphrey I've met was in his 20s & very bright & very athletic.

WithACherryOnTop · 20/05/2012 16:58

.Absolutely not. It's one of the ugliest, most awful names you could ever inflict on a person, and it'd be even harder to live with during the teenage years.

LynetteScavo · 20/05/2012 16:59

emmyloo2, you'd be disappointed with DS2's name. It was very unusual 9 years ago(we got a lot of Hmm faces], but it's very popular, (especially on MN) now. It really suits him though. And no, I'm not saying what it is! Smile

WithACherryOnTop · 20/05/2012 16:59

Edward,Hugo and Theodore are great however.

EskimoPie · 20/05/2012 17:21

I think it's a great name, though to any Australian, Humphrey Bear would spring to mind as a 70s/80s TV icon Hmm

Stellan · 20/05/2012 17:27

Worked fine for Humphrey Bogart!

Stellan · 20/05/2012 17:30

By the way, if you like Humphrey, you might like some of these clunky but cool names here: nameberry.com/list/192/Clunky-but-Cool-Names-for-Boys

I think your 14 y/o Humphrey will only be embarrassed introducing himself as such if you don't raise him to be confident and proud of his name. If you shy away from saying it when people ask his name, he'll feel the same way too. If you use it, be bold and brave and just say it like it's the most ordinary name in the world. He'll be fine then.

NenNen · 20/05/2012 17:30

Can you imagine Humphrey in the pub with his mates chatting up girls when he's in his mid-20s? If so, go for it! Personally I think it's cute for a baby but not for an adult.
