Humphrey - would you?

I saw a little boy at the park the other day called Humphrey. He was about 18 months and it really suited him. However it seems to be universally slated on here. Why? I really love it and would consider it for my DS2. I much prefer it to the constant Olivers, thomases, charlies, Finns etc that seem to pop up.

What do you think? Would a little Humphrey be beaten in the playground? And would it be embarassing to introduce yourself as a 14 year old Humphrey? Other names I like are Edward, theodore and Hugo. DS1 is george. George and Humphrey!! I like it!!

Yes, I can. He would be a rugby player with a degree from a good university. He gets rather drunk on Saturday nights out with the boys, but always turns up to mow Grandmas lawn on Sunday morning, however bad his hangover.

The gap year where he went travelling through Asia gave his parents a few grey hairs (lots of emailing home for more money to be transferred to him), but he has a at heart, and can't wait to meet the right woman and settle down with a Labrador and a couple of kids.

ASByatt · 20/05/2012 19:02

No, I wouldn't do this.
i have taught in secondary schools.............

I agree with LynetteScavo's character portrait, though! - But if he wasn't like that, it could be gruesome.

nightswimmer · 20/05/2012 19:05

Don't inflict that name on him, it's sheer perverse cruelty. And why would you, for the teeny weeny chance that he may not be teased, bullied, or called Humpty Dumpty, Hugo, on the other hand, is GREAT. there are hundreds of other names to choose from DON't DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UntamedShrew · 20/05/2012 19:05

My BIL is a Humphrey and very popular with the ladies Smile. I think it's quite a charming name but you need to carry a name like that with a certain confidence.

He is known as Humph or Humpo.

tammy234 · 20/05/2012 19:08

I too thought of Humphrey Bogart. We find it hard to associate boys/teenagers with the name because it isn't used very often so we don't know many (any?). Any name becomes the person who has it imo. But in theory I can think of cool Humphreys other than Humphrey Bogart.

I much prefer Humphrey to Harvey, Luka, Charlie, Alfie, Edward, Theo.... It evokes Humphrey Lyttelton for me.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 20/05/2012 19:27

DD's toy elephant, her most prized possession from birth is called Humphrey Smile

Wouldn't name a baby Humphrey for that reason alone- you say Humphrey, I hear elephant.

MarySA · 20/05/2012 19:49

It comes in the totally dreadful category I'm afraid. Would anybody really call a child Humphrey.

LynetteScavo · 20/05/2012 19:58

10 years ago people would have turned their noses up at Oscar. Wink

yellowflowers · 20/05/2012 21:51

I was at uni with a Humfrey - now a journalist and writer. He was posh and very good looking.

I also know a young Humphrey, about 18 months (maybe even the one you saw in the park). They call him Humpty. Took me a while to get used to it but seems lovely now.

Lunarlyte · 20/05/2012 22:12

Humphrey: cute on a lad under 5yo, but imagine what it would inflict upon him once he starts maturing! What girl would want to date a Humphrey when you have Matt, Joe, Adam, etc, to choose from. I'm just trying to demonstrate the point that Humphrey isn't a masculine-sounding name. Makes me think of a cute little boy or a ... sorry being brutally honest here total drip. I wouldn't date a Humphrey.

RillaBlythe · 20/05/2012 22:26

I love it. My great grandfather was a Humphrey. Actually it is my cousin's middle name (he is very good looking & into outdoor sports). I would use it, if I could get it past DP.

bronze · 20/05/2012 22:29

I know a humphrey who must be eleven or twelve who is absolutely lovely and it really suits him.

In fact I think his mum may even be an mner

yellowflowers · 20/05/2012 22:41

I don't know Lunarlytr. Aged 14 i'd have been thrilled for a real live boy, whatever his name, to be interested in me Grin

Firawla · 21/05/2012 00:51

It's cute! It could work - sounds posh

catinboots · 21/05/2012 00:55

We have a Hugo. Nickname Hugs or Hugzy! Everyone loves if!

catinboots · 21/05/2012 00:57

Humphrey is really cool!! Go for iit GrinGrin

?lol? at Yellowflowers Yes, I suppose I an thinking from the perspective of a 29-year-old woman with two children. I guess I would have been thrilled if any lad with a pulse was interested in me at aged 14, too.

For the record, I had a huge crush on a German exchange student named Lennart when I was at college - I still think it's a cool name, even though e turned out to be a total douche (I.e. he fancied my mate!) x

emmyloo2 · 21/05/2012 07:47

all very valid comments thank you!

I love LynetteScavo's description of Humphrey. I am not sure whether I want to be her idea of Humphrey or marry him! He sounds gorgeous.

and yy to Yellowflowers - when I was at highschool there was a french guy who had moved to Australia and his name was Arnold which of course was at the height of hideousness in the late 80s early 90s. He was drop dead gorgeous though so I still fancied him.

and agree that 10 years ago people would have turned up their noses at names such as Arthur or George or Albert etc. (probably a lot still do!)

squoosh · 21/05/2012 10:45

It's absolutely vile. And I mean V.I.L.E.

Don't do it.

Flubba · 21/05/2012 10:50

OMG squoosh - you don't hold back, do you?!

Northey · 21/05/2012 10:50

No, it's lovely! Distinguished yet friendly in one handy package.

Northey · 21/05/2012 11:03

Also, if you are of a hippyish bent, you could conceivably make Happy a nickname from it (via Huppy).

squoosh · 21/05/2012 11:25

Nope flubba not with a name like this.

The thread title is 'Humphrey - would you?' indicating she knows it's a polarising name. I try to see the best in most names but I would feel so sorry for a poor kid called Humphrey. I'd imagine his parents were trying very hard to be ironic and alternative. Yawn.
