'Masculine' sounding girls names.

I cannot abide overly twee girls names, and am hoping to find something that sounds 'masculine' and almost surnamey.

At the moment I like-
Sloane
Tate
Blair
Peyton
Quinn
Whittier

Any other suggestions? Ideally they'd go with classical, albeit more feminine name like Charlotte, Alice, Jane...

I think German or Scandinavian names sound quite strong
Beate (Be-at -a)
Renate
Anja/Anya
Astrid
Berta
Monika
Gerda
Frida
Helga
etc

Gita
Senta

GetDownNesbitt · 19/05/2012 21:34

Stevie?

shinyblackgrape · 19/05/2012 21:48

frau - yes re the Scandinavian names.

Ulrika called her daughter Bo which I understand is a boy's name actually

I always thought it was a bit mean that her second daughter is called Martha in contrast but then I like twee girls names Grin

MerryMarigold · 19/05/2012 21:54

Be careful. The more you want her to be a tomboyish, un-girly little girl, the more likely she is to LURRRRVE pink, Barbie and glitter.

I would go for a strong, simple but girl's name rather than 'unisex' (Whittier Hmm or downright boy's names like Finlay Hmm or Jude.

Claudia
Charlotte
Meredith

There have been threads on 'strong' girls' names before.

sonniboo · 19/05/2012 21:57

Some of the suggested names are boys' name imo: Tate, Payton and Quinn.

How about a unisex name like Alex, Rowan or Morgan?

wonderwooman · 19/05/2012 22:03

Tegan
Billie
Meike (myker)

besmirchedandbewildered · 19/05/2012 22:12

Madison is surnamey but def girl, also Taylor.

Or you could go for a robust-but-definitely-girls-name that would sound good with your surname.

I have had Wine but I think these might sound ok?

Elkie
Megan
Ruth
Ellen / Helen / Eleanor
Iona
Ilse
Inez

And I think the herby names sound great - Sorrel, Sage etc. Also the Piper/Parker thing, love those.

Gonna suggest you avoid Grace Grin

Sorry that's off the brief...

MerryMarigold · 19/05/2012 22:16

I do know a girl called Bobby-Jo. 2 boys' names but somehow quite girly!

CrumpettyTree · 19/05/2012 22:22

Bernard

CrumpettyTree · 19/05/2012 22:23

Parker seems a very odd name for a girl. IMO

shinyblackgrape · 19/05/2012 22:25

I've just laughed out loud at Bernard!

winkle2 · 19/05/2012 22:36

I've always liked Sammy Jo!!

besmirchedandbewildered · 20/05/2012 10:56

Crumpetty there is an actress called Parker Posey.

PrunellaDeVille · 20/05/2012 18:42

richmal
jonquil
francis
robin
lindsay
jodie
percy (persephone)

minipie · 20/05/2012 19:17

Your list are all very American sounding to me. Are you in the US?

Here are some that aren't too frilly, but also aren't too American/surnamey:

Tess
Tamsin
Beth/Bethan
Juno
Robyn
Hazel
Ruth
Jess
Astrid
Ingrid
Kristen
Kirsten
Lauren
Alice
Frances
Cass
Marta
Seren
Bess
Claire

tiptoptally · 20/05/2012 20:34

I'm also quite tired of all the milly-molly-mandy-various-versions-of-eva type names that are about at the moment. Whilst still v feminine, I think these names are less 'twee' -

Caroline
Eleanor
Mairead
Rosa
Jennifer

littleweed10 · 20/05/2012 20:50

Mallory

Tessa617 · 20/05/2012 21:01

Wallis?

SilkStalkings · 20/05/2012 22:00

Gibson

lollystix · 21/05/2012 10:54

Morgan - I knew a female one at school

squoosh · 21/05/2012 12:25

Gibson???? For a girl?

Dearie me.

PercyFilth · 21/05/2012 12:28

Christian was originally a girl's name, as was Julian.

If she wants a more feminine name, these names can be easily converted by adding -a, -e, -na, -ne etc.

seeker · 21/05/2012 12:30

Well, Shirley and Joscelyn were originally boy's names- would you use them for a boy?

Positiveplus · 21/05/2012 12:31

Sorry if there are any repeats but how about:

Robyn
Rowan
Regan
Taylor
Morgan
Bronwyn
Drew
Alex
Jamie
Joss
Jude
Daryl
Wren
Fran
Greta
Carla

Personally like Robyn, Carla and Bronwyn.

winkle2 · 21/05/2012 14:46

Terri
Kennedy
Madison
