'Masculine' sounding girls names.

I cannot abide overly twee girls names, and am hoping to find something that sounds 'masculine' and almost surnamey.

At the moment I like-
Sloane
Tate
Blair
Peyton
Quinn
Whittier

Any other suggestions? Ideally they'd go with classical, albeit more feminine name like Charlotte, Alice, Jane...

oooh yes Darell

singinginthelifeboats · 19/05/2012 00:40

Sydney?

I know a little girl called that and I really like it.

I have a DD with a 'boys name with an 'ia' on the end' and that works......

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 19/05/2012 01:00

I like Peta :)

OOh I know a Morven! She's very beautiful, clever, genuinely nice, has a fantastic career and a gorgeous husband. Jammy cow Grin

GnomeDePlume · 19/05/2012 01:30

Just a small thought (and I whisper this quietly)....

It really doesnt matter what you call your DD. You dont have to give her a strong name to make her strong. You can call her Fluffy Princess but if you imbue her with strength it really wont matter because when she is playing in the front row of England's women's first 15 they will call her Fluff and love her none the less.

I wish you joy of your daughter.

singinginthelifeboats · 19/05/2012 01:35

Agree Gnome

kilmuir · 19/05/2012 01:50

They are awful. Don't have to have a very girls girl name , but they conjure up an image of Vinegar tits from Prisoner cell block h

NadiaWadia · 19/05/2012 03:31

Sorry but I have to say - They are all awful. What is particulaly twee about using a recognised female name? OK, some are more frilly than others, but you don't have to call her Lucybelle do you? What's wrong with classical female names like Charlotte and Alice, as you suggested (did you mean for a middle name?)

There is such a wide choice of lovely female names, I am sure your daughter won't thank you later for giving her a surname instead of a proper name.

Sloane, FGS!

NadiaWadia · 19/05/2012 04:01

Sorry, maybe that sounded a bit OTT! Your choice, after all.

I just think you should consider the possibility that your daughter may prefer to have a more recognised 'girl's name' as she grows up, and there are certainly plenty to choose from.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 19/05/2012 05:50

Some of these suggestions are just boys names not masculine girls names, you might as well call her Dave. There are loads of girls names that are not twee and not boys names.

From your list I like Tate and Quinn. The rest are awful. Sloane is bordering on abusive. I'd maybe go with something that is a girls name, but can has a nn that is masculine. My suggestions are;

Robyn
Cameron
Charlie (Charlotte)
Alexis (Alex)
Erin
Harriet (Harry)
Regan

Flubba · 19/05/2012 06:04

:o @ Dave

Billie
Bobbie

Can't think of anymore at the moment, Fifi-Lala and Sweetie-Pie-Cutesy-Toes need my attention.

seeker · 19/05/2012 06:33

There are loads of girl's names that aren't twee but are still obviously girl's names.

Would you call a boy Julia?

3littlebadgers · 19/05/2012 06:42

Janoschi · 19/05/2012 13:30

We have a Robin... any good?

mixedberrymilkshake · 19/05/2012 13:46

Basically- we have a twee girly surname. Think Peter Pan! (don't want it to be in the search)...so yeah, I don't want a clash. Ever since I saw Ferris Beuller I adored the character Sloane, I just thought she was so sassy and gorgeous and I've loved the name ever since. Grin

Jesus some people are so rude!!! I think Sloane is lovely. And I really like unisex names.
I love:

Harper
Avery
Addison
Hadley
Kendall ( the only reason I prop wouldn't use this is that I would go crazy if she got called Ken!)

mixedberrymilkshake · 19/05/2012 13:57

Avery is lovely!

Sloane is a great name! So is Rowan! I love boyish girls names like Georgina shortened to George or Georgie

"I am sure your daughter won't thank you later for giving her a surname instead of a proper name."
actually I'm very grateful to have a strong name that can be taken seriously, you can always have a shortened frilly nickname if you have a strong serious name, but you can't butch up the current favourites like Ellie wellie if no longer version is given can you?

When choosing a girls name I like names that can be girly or butch or a ball breaking manager or an engineer or a beautician or whatever, the name should grow into the person not the other way round. I think you can do this with unisex or masculine girls names because they can be shortenend, you can't do it with the current trend of giving shortened girly foofoo names with no long option given

Kayano · 19/05/2012 14:17

Joss
