Opinions on Bastian?

Hi everyone,

We're due in a few weeks and whilst we have a potential girls name sorted, we're really struggling with boys names.

My DP suggested Bastian yesterday and I quite like it. I believe it is ok to use it in it's own right rather than being short for Sebastian - which oddly enough I don't like at all.

My questions are:

Do you think it would be weird to use Bastian as the full name (maybe Bas as a nn?)
What do you think of it as a choice in general?
And, are there any middle names you think would go well with it?

Can't wait to hear what you think, good or bad!

*Apologise for the random apostrophe on it's!!

Yes it would be weird. Everyone would think it short for Sebastian.

smother · 14/05/2012 11:21

Apologies in advance, I'm going to be harsh....it's really really BAD!

I think it's too similar to the word bast* and so would be open to bad nicknaming/teasing potential. And Bas... hmm, isn't this what blokes call their, erm, you know...

I don't know if others would agree, but I think this makes it a definite no-go name.

Sorry but you did ask!

smother · 14/05/2012 11:22

lost the stars... mean it's too similar to the word bastxxx

And agree with belgo, just sounds like a shortened version of the (much nicer) name Sebastian.

CrackersandCheese · 14/05/2012 11:47

Thanks for replies.

Don't worry about honesty... That's what I was after.

I'm not in love with the name so I don't mind really.

Gosh I hope we have a girl!!

It does sound like bastard.

typicalvirgo · 14/05/2012 11:53

No No NO ...I really think you should rethink this.

and if you come up with any other really really odd names please post here and we can set you straight again

Stellan · 14/05/2012 11:56

Not sure why you would want to name your son 'bastion':

  1. a projecting portion of a rampart or fortification that forms an irregular pentagon attached at the base to the main work.
  2. a fortified place.
  3. anything seen as preserving or protecting some quality, condition, etc.: a bastion of solitude; a bastion of democracy.

And spell it wrong. It's not got a horrendous meaning but it's no Faith, Hope or Charity, is it?

Not one for me - but then I'm in two minds about Sebastian too.

Spartak · 14/05/2012 11:59

Isn't the name of the camp in Afghanistan where the forces live?

EdithWeston · 14/05/2012 12:04

Spartak: you beat me too it! Although spelt differently, it's the name of the main British camp, so military families and news hounds will make that connexion. It's only a couple of years now until UK is meant to withdraw, so it may be only a short-term association.

I'd use it as a nn, not a free-standing name.

Amapoleon · 14/05/2012 12:06

Yup reminds me of Camp Bastion too.

saffronwblue · 14/05/2012 12:06

I know a cat called Bastion, Bas for short, I don't think it works for a human.

What about Basil? Caspian? Crispin?

Wildwaterfalls · 14/05/2012 12:06

Bas is quite a common (nick)name in Holland and I quite like it in Dutch, but it really doesn't work well in English unfortunately. I think it sounds too much like 'bus'...

Vicky2011 · 14/05/2012 12:06

Yes Afghan was my first thought.

Then of course the closeness to bastard. Not good on a number of levels.

pinkmagic1 · 14/05/2012 12:09

I immediately thought Camp Bastian too.

sonniebonnie · 14/05/2012 12:10

I know a German Bastian - it sounds great in German imo. In fact I prefer it to Sebastian too.

But in English it is too close to bastard, I'm afraid. Even the nickname Bas or Basty would lend itself to teasing with bastard.

How about Quentin? Or Tristan? Or Fabian? They all have a similar feel imo.

outyougo · 14/05/2012 12:20

Cons

Camp Bastion
Bastard
"Is it short for Sebastian?' "No?" "Is it a nickname then?" "No its my real name. "Really?"
Baz as is Barry as in Baz/Shaz/Daz/Kaz. To 80s for words.

Pros

You like it.

saffronwblue · 14/05/2012 12:22

What is your girl's name if you don't mind revealing it?

NovackNGood · 14/05/2012 12:27

Well if you are a military family then I could understand it more as in Camp Bastion.
However it does bring to mind cruel nicknames very quickly if you think about it and teenage boys will be teenage boys about it.

Bellaholland · 14/05/2012 12:29

Bastion is a popular Dutch name and Bas too! It doesn't work in English though (my opinion)

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 14/05/2012 12:37

Oh My Good God.

I am all for unsual names, and I love a bit of ponce but Bastian is A BAD THING.

Sorry.

EdithWeston · 14/05/2012 12:41

Perhaps OP or DH is in the military, and this baby is a celebration of a safe return?

In which case, perhaps there are names of other bases to consider: Wolf, Joyce, Boris, Clark, Connolly, Hunter, Jackson, Fenty, Lindsey, Ripley, Sharana, Todd, Wilson? (But please not Leatherneck!)

Floggingmolly · 14/05/2012 12:46

That is not a name Hmm
Is it that important to you to be "different" that you'd choose something like that?

GoPoldark · 14/05/2012 12:48

Not good.

How about Plinth?

CrackersandCheese · 14/05/2012 13:12

Hi

Ok. Thanks for the continued negative responses. I get the message lol.

I will have a think about other options.
