Opinions on Bastian?

Hi everyone,

We're due in a few weeks and whilst we have a potential girls name sorted, we're really struggling with boys names.

My DP suggested Bastian yesterday and I quite like it. I believe it is ok to use it in it's own right rather than being short for Sebastian - which oddly enough I don't like at all.

My questions are:

Do you think it would be weird to use Bastian as the full name (maybe Bas as a nn?)
What do you think of it as a choice in general?
And, are there any middle names you think would go well with it?

Don't like it - immediately thought of Bastion (see Stellan's post) or short for Sebastian.

Ps sonnie I know a German Bastian too. I don't think it's that unusual in other countries...

Nah it just looks like you're misspelling Sebastian to be different.

Also all the military associations already covered.

And it's just not nice (I also dislike Sebastian but this is much worse).

Well I like it. And my first thought was The Neverending Story as that's the name of the boy in it. One of my favourite films as a kid!

It's totally dire. The worst name I've heard yet. I think I prefer Ptolemy Cuthbert.

also sounds like 'bastion' - as in it was a bastion of colonialism.

Don't Do It.

There's a famous German football player (Bayern Munich and National Team) called Bastian Schweinsteiger. It really is not an unusual name (outside of England) and there is nothing 'poncy' or 'different' about it.

Is moving to the continent an option ?

What girls names do you like?

My friend has a Sebastian... and he is called 'Buster' by pretty much everyone.

I think I may have to pesto, as I'm not wanting to sound poncy or different..!

The girl's name we've chosen is Evelyn Rose or Evelyn May. As you can see, very English, non-poncy names.

I'm very happy with these names, so don't really want any rude responses about them being too common or whatever...

But, if it helps with boys name suggestions then I'll throw them out there to the lions

worse than Camp Bastion, it makes me think of Ali Bastian, the toothy actress from Hollyoaks / reality tv.

Nooooo. Rarely would I baulk at any name but Bastian is yuck in too many ways. The kid would have to be so super-cool to be able to carry it off it would be too big a burden and pressure to be fair for any except the most exceptional child.

Crackers can you give us a few names you have rejected and any still in the frame so we can think of ideas to suggest you might like? :)

Well, there's no list as such. Ones that have come up: Russell, Archie, Adam, Zain/Zane, Edward...

I don't love any of these, including Bastian, as much as the girl's names. And that is what I want really.

My DP is threatening Ghenghis if we can't find something we love. So, for those that thought Bastian was bad, I'm sure you would have a field day with that!

I used to work with a Bastian. He is German. I think it may be popular there.

Just makes me think of Camp Bastian, really.

Boys names are such a problem, we had exact same with ds, joked it would be a boy just because we had no idea what to call him. It was! He remained nameless for 4 days while we frantically scoured books and internet for one we could both vaguely agree on.

I was holding out for Bruce at one point. There are lots of cool Bruces. But everyone including DH hated it! I can see their point but I still secretly have a soft spot for that name - against all logic.

We are expecting again and having the exact same conversation - it's gonna be a boy isn't it!

It is a real name as others have said it's the name of the boy in The Neverending Story, which I remember well from my youth - yes and the Limahl theme song too pandawatch!

I like it.

Slightly different but not 'out there' alternatives:

Wyatt, Reuben, Fraser, Rafferty, Jasper, Asher, Caspar, Oscar, Milo, Ian (I love this name and there seem to be no little Ians these days).

Having similar difficulties coming up with boys names too OP, my current favourite is Reuben.
