Arabic yet 'English sounding' boys names

Just found out dc2 is a boy.

My partner is of north African decent and very loosely follows Islam.

Basically he wants an 'English sounding' name as much as I do as he is English born and bred. However he does want to give our children names recognised under Islam.

So far we have Zachary and Noah on our very small shortlist. Does anyone have any others we could use? (aside from Adam, that's been vetoed!)

TIA

we got through this by giving DS a very English name and a VERY Arabic Middle name.

Our surname is very Arabic.

ripsishere · 05/05/2012 08:50

Adil, pronounced Ardel. Lovely name, lovely man who owns it.
When I had DD in Oman, the boy next door was called Adaham. Slightly different to Adam. Any use?

sassytheFIRST · 05/05/2012 08:54

Variations on Joseph?

Thistledew · 05/05/2012 08:57

Elias
Ali
Adan (with an 'n'. alternative spelling, which is more Anglicised, Aidan, or Aiden)

I used to know a Muslim guy called Haris. I have also seen the spelling Harris used by Muslims.
Faris is also an Arabic name that sounds quite international (and pretty modern).

Firawla · 05/05/2012 13:56

Sami
Zaki
Elyas
Daniel
Omar
Ali
Binyamin

dreamingofcalm · 05/05/2012 14:36

Ayman.

Love the name Haris too

tunaday · 05/05/2012 17:39

Also know a Harris and a Faris and a Dowed (not sure that's the right sp.)

rockinhippy · 05/05/2012 17:44

DHs lovely friend with the same cultural mix & is a Farris, which IMHO is a great name for a DS, sounds sort of modern English, but isn't :)

quitcomplaining · 05/05/2012 17:48

Thank you! I love Harris! Have not come by it before. Anyone know what it means?

My cat is called Harris....

Firawla · 05/05/2012 22:14

haris means a guard

badtime · 05/05/2012 22:21

The internet says it means 'guardian'.

badtime · 05/05/2012 22:24

So not 'cat'.

pinkmagic1 · 05/05/2012 22:31

Congratulations! My children have the same cultural mix. DS has a very Arabic first name but Sami as a middle name. Other suggestions are:

Tarik
Omar
Zane
Adham
Kamran
Shariff

I really love Ayman which someone else mentioned too, DS was very nearly called this.

pinkmagic1 · 05/05/2012 22:33

Sorry, didn't notice you didn't want Adham.

sashh · 06/05/2012 12:54

Adam, sorry just noted the veto
Samir (shorten to Sam)
Abraham

Are all the 'old testament' / 'tamuld' names valid? What about a David?

I have the same issue and have just got all excited at the sight of Daniel on the list above - but just been informed by DP that is is Arabic, but not Muslim - so back to the drawing board!
Out list, also very short is
Ali
faris
I love Solomon, but DP says it is very old fashioned, and won't even consider it :(

Britsy · 06/05/2012 14:03

Daniel is a Muslim name, but usually spelt 'daniyal'.

abbypumpkin · 06/05/2012 22:20

Sami

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 07/05/2012 09:11

arf badtime! I didn't say it meant 'cat', just that it's the name of our cat :)

myrlabelle · 08/10/2012 17:44

I thought we'd have a boy after two girls but its Another girl... But I had picked the name "raif" for a boy I think it's super cool and it also means wolf in German.
Others I considered were Zane, Zachary, Dean, Ryan, Laith and Caden
Congrats :)

myrlabelle · 08/10/2012 17:45

By the way "Raif" in arabic means "the merciful"

Japple · 08/10/2012 18:05

...Ferran
...Alvan
...Sami
-These are Arabic.Jill
