Arabic yet 'English sounding' boys names

Just found out dc2 is a boy.

My partner is of north African decent and very loosely follows Islam.

Basically he wants an 'English sounding' name as much as I do as he is English born and bred. However he does want to give our children names recognised under Islam.

So far we have Zachary and Noah on our very small shortlist. Does anyone have any others we could use? (aside from Adam, that's been vetoed!)

TIA

David is a prophet in Islam.

Joshua is another form of Jesus who is also an Islamic prophet.

A lot of the names suggested are slightly different in English and Arabic. Isaac is Ishaq, Noah is Nuh, Abraham is Ibrahim, Solomon is Sulyiman. I also didn't know that Zachary was Arabic, have heard Zakinthos, Zakir, Zakiriyya.

Samil - shortened to Sam for every day.

What's wrong with Adam? It ticks all boxes.

chipsandmushypeas · 10/10/2012 09:47

I like Karim

DoIgetastickerforthat · 10/10/2012 09:57

We have the same cultural mix and would throw my vote in for Faris. I'm biased because I have one but I've always had really positive comments from my British friends and family.

Also, how about Malik or Idris? Both easily pronounceable and 'known' (Idris Elba, Art Malik).

exairhostess · 24/10/2013 16:04

My suggestions would be:

Sami
Yousef (Joseph)
Karim
Zain/Zane/Zayn
Rafi
Raif
Isa (Jesus)
Zachariah
Imran
Omar
Ziad
Daniyal

  • Asiel for a boy, Pronounced a-Scil with an emphasis on the S, in Arabic it means Original or of known origin. In hebrew its a combined word: Asa would mean to do and El an abbreviation of Elohim meaning God, the name in hebrew means God Has made or created of God.
  • Dani is a name fairly common in Saudi arabia, and sounds fairly english.
  • Jacob, which in German is pronounced Yaqob and sounds exactly like the Arabic pronunciation Yaqoob also a prophet.
  • Rais, pronounced Ra-iese in arabic means Chief or leader.
  • Yunus, pronounced U-nes, which is the arabic form of Jonah.
  • Yusef, pronounced U-sef, which is the arabic form of Joseph.

-Zayn, which in arabic means, beauty and grace.

  • Zaki, means pure in arabic, however, Egyptians pronounce the word Smart the same way, so its a 2 in 1 package ;)
  • Zakaria or Zacharia, which in hebrew means God remembers, fairly common among muslims as well.

Same siutation here
Jacob
Soloman
Ibrahim
Ali
Adam
Sami

Adil will get said as Adeel. Adel will get said as Adele. They are nearer a sort of Ah-dl.
OP wants a name that sounds English but is a recognized Arabic/Islamic name. Adam is the obvious choice, but that's out.

I'd have a look on the Arabic boys' names and pick one you and your husband like. Some of the Islamic names have OT equivalents - Joseph, David, Solomon, Elias...
I think Ilyas (ILL-yas) is nice but I'm not keen on Elias (El-eye-as)
Would something like Zayn do?

autumnkate · 23/01/2019 22:23

Raif is gorgeous

OPs son will be 7 this year, I’m sure he’s got a name already.

Aahme · 09/03/2021 19:41

Harris means guard or guardian in Arabic

KirstenBlest · 09/03/2021 20:48

@ripsishere

Adil, pronounced Ardel. Lovely name, lovely man who owns it. When I had DD in Oman, the boy next door was called Adaham. Slightly different to Adam. Any use?
I know an Adel of north african descent and he says it as Addle. A friend's son is Adil and she says it with the arabic pronunciation. The A is a transcription, and the arabic name starts with a ghayn not an alif.

I'd use the Adil spelling because Adel got called Adele by some, but Adil will get Ad-eel.
I'd choose something easier.

Haris afaik has one r.

Dowed is probably Daoud.

Other north africans I know have sons called Ilyas and Adam.

Idris?
