I think Maggie and Dolly are my favourites...

OP posts:

Dolly - No!! Imagine a grown woman trying to have herself taken seriously, both professionally and in personal life. Plastic, helpless, twee, unintelligent. Cloned. (Sorry.)

Kristen, Pearl, Renee... not a fan. Renee is a popular name in Australia for women in their 20s to 40s now! (French pronunciation.)

Maggie and Alice are by far the best.
Good luck!

Happilymarried155 · 04/05/2012 13:39

Maggie and dolly are the best!!! :)

Haberdashery · 04/05/2012 13:44

Maggie is actually a great name. Pearl is OK. Kristen is dated. Alice is nice but dull. Renee and Dolly are absolutely awful.

PercyFilth · 04/05/2012 13:50

Maggie - yes, as long as you give her a full version of the name, be it Margaret, Margarita, Marguerite. People need options.

Dolly - as above, must be Dorothy or Dorothea in full

Renée - yes, unusual and chic

Alice - pretty and classic, can't go wrong with this.

Kristen - I think of Kristin Scott Thomas. Yes, it's nice, there are lots of variations. It is a version of Christina, isn't it.

Pearl - I'm not very keen, nice meaning but I don't like the sound of it much.

StealthPolarBear · 04/05/2012 13:52

Cornish doll and hill I think did the original research into smoking and cancer. Assume that was a surname though :o

Lexiesgirl · 04/05/2012 13:53

Cornish, that's my marker for names too. "Hello, I'm your consultant, Dolly..." Grin

I also try and imagine how the name will work depending on how dc turns out - for example, DP always wanted a boy called Douglas. I vetoed it because I think Doug would work if a ds grew up to be a rugby player, but not as well if ds is a little chubby and into Dungeons & Dragons... (just like dp Wink)

I sometimes wonder if people remember they are naming an adult as well as a baby.

CornishMade · 04/05/2012 13:55

"I sometimes wonder if people remember they are naming an adult as well as a baby." So true!

Mama1980 · 04/05/2012 13:59

Love pearl, my nan was called dolly-doll for short, she always hated it said it wasn't a name for a grown up.

BBQJuly · 04/05/2012 14:54

Kristen or Pearl.

Kristen - very pretty and underused :)
Maggie - a bit harsh
Renee - OK if you're French
Dolly - a toy's name
Alice - OK, a bit dull
Pearl - lovely :)

minipie · 04/05/2012 15:01

I like Maggie or Kristen

Alice is ok.

Not keen on Dolly, Pearl or Renee - they're all a bit "Deep South" for me.

DaisyMaisyJessicaEmily · 04/05/2012 15:03

Alice and Kristen only.

MarySA · 04/05/2012 15:05

I like Pearl and Alice best from that list. I also like Pandora. Shame it's not very popular. Or maybe that's a good thing!

Kikithecat · 04/05/2012 15:07

Kristen. I'm surprised so may MNers don't like it. Kristen S-T is cool.

EssentialFattyAcid · 04/05/2012 15:12

Maggie is too close to Maggot for me
Dolly is a toy's name
I think Alice and Pearl are the best

What about Kirsten instead of Kristen?

squoosh · 04/05/2012 15:18

Kristen Scott Thomas lift the classy factor of Kristen by 100%

Without being followed by Scott-Thomas though it sounds a bit 90's.

Asand aside, I think she is one of the most beautiful actresses.

LiteraryMermaid · 04/05/2012 15:26

My preferences in order:
Alice
Pearl
Maggie
Dolly
Kristen
Renee

Only really like Alice (or Alys?) and Pearl though.

hatebeak · 04/05/2012 15:52

As Maggie and Pearl are both nicknames for Margaret, your friend could go for that and then decide later. Think they are the nicest two here, anyway - although you can't go wrong with Alice.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 04/05/2012 15:55

IMO Kristen would have to be spelled Kristin, like Ms Scott-Thomas, otherwise I agree with squoosh; it's a bit 90s. Also the surname makes a big difference.

poppy283 · 04/05/2012 15:57

I like Alice best, then Pearl.

Maggie would be acceptable if it's short for Margot :)

BlueChampagne · 04/05/2012 16:14

Kristen by a mile

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 04/05/2012 16:14

Ooooh, Margot. Love it. In an ironic 'Good Life' kind of way.

CupOfBrownJoy · 04/05/2012 16:16

Alice. Pretty and classic.

I have never met a nasty Alice Smile

tummytickler · 04/05/2012 16:31

Kristen - not keen, a little bit 80's to me
Maggie - love as nn for Magnolia, Margaret.
Renee - not keen
Dolly - love, love, love - but only as a nn for Dorothy
Alice - ok
Pearl - love - my nearly 7 year old dd is called Pearl.

NadiaWadia · 04/05/2012 16:56

Alice is the only really nice one IMO - classic name.

Dolly is cute, but only as a short form of Dorothy/Dorothea

Kristen has quite a nice sound but slightly dated and seems very American.

Dislike Maggie and Pearl.

Rene
