Its at the moment between Hector, Dexter or Rudy.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think Hector is better than Dexter in the up-itself-stakes, but that is personal prejudice no doubt. I like Rudy, went to school with one.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 03/05/2012 23:19

It is a bit, but I quite like it.

DioneTheDiabolist · 03/05/2012 23:20

Definitely Hector. I love Hector.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 03/05/2012 23:20

It is a bit, but I quite like it.

mummybare · 03/05/2012 23:24

Another vote for Hector here. I had a friend who had it as a nn at school (no idea why...) and he was lovely, so good associations for me.

BrightnessFalls · 03/05/2012 23:26

Im just thinking of that fab series/book The Slap!! Hector wasnt a nice person. I guess you could say that about Dexter.....

Possibly, but I quite like it (a good, strong name - I studied Classics so good associations for me)! Not keen on Dexter and certainly not Rudy (that's what we referred to as a fart when we were growing up!)...

shoobidoo · 04/05/2012 10:17

Hector is awful - it means 'bully' or 'tormentor' and to hector is to bully.
Also, would you shorten to Heck Hmm.

Rudy is to 'rude'y imo.

Dexter is a great, strong name.

shoobidoo · 04/05/2012 10:18

A fart is a Rudey, as is a burp!

Stellan · 04/05/2012 11:08

Hector, n.

  1. Name of a Trojan hero celebrated in the Iliad; hence transf. A valiant warrior like Hector.
  1. (Now usu. with lower-case initial.) A swaggering fellow; a swash-buckler; a braggart, blusterer, bully.
  1. Name of a species of butterfly (Papilio Hector).

Number 2 would dissuade me from using it.

squoosh · 04/05/2012 11:11

A bit up itself?

Yes, a lot up itself.

supernannyisace · 04/05/2012 11:21

Hector? The kids have a supersized teddy bear called Hector.Grin

I like Rudy- I know a little girl named Rudy.

But I have heard it used for boys too.

YY to Hector.

Achillies! GrinGrinGrin

PandaWatch · 04/05/2012 11:45

I have a DN called Hector (his mum is Greek). He's a beautiful, sweet, intelligent, sporty, fun-loving little boy (can you tell I'm a proud auntie?!) so I would definitely go for Hector! Smile

PandaWatch · 04/05/2012 11:46

Also, Rudy is short for Rudolph, no?

rachel234 · 04/05/2012 11:58

I would not name my son a name that literally means 'bully' or 'tormentor'. The word is too commonly used imo to avoid that association (sometimes as a verb 'to hector').

I do like Dexter very much though. HAs a nice meaning too:
"Dexter is a Latin adjective meaning "on the right hand side, skillful, fortunate, favourable, proper, fitting". I guess that is where dexterity comes from Smile.

Not keen on Rudy - too rude.

Migsy1 · 04/05/2012 12:04

Hector always reminds me of a programme I used to watch when I was very small called Hector's House. It was great but I associate the name with a puppet dog

ripsishere · 04/05/2012 12:18

I like Hector. DD had a friend called that. He was a lovely boy.
i wouldn't think of hectoring someone, although I did call his mum Kiki.

Psammead · 04/05/2012 13:41

Love Hector!

mejon · 04/05/2012 14:24

rip Grin. Hector's House for me too but in a good way. Not many people will be familiar with The Slap so don't let that put you off. Much nicer than Dexter or Rudy.

BBQJuly · 04/05/2012 15:23

Hector definitely the best of the three.

MamaBlues · 04/05/2012 15:35

I have always liked Hector, it's on our name list also but not sure if I am brave enough to use it
what about for a middle name?

WithACherryOnTop · 04/05/2012 16:00

Rudy.

Hector is horrid, and Dexter almost as bad.

GoPoldark · 04/05/2012 19:59

I know a Hector, brilliant name.

Hector in the Iliad is a TOTAL HERO.
