Poncetastic, but I think some poncey names are still quite nice. I'd have to know & respect lots about the famous Greek Ptolemy to pull it off.

BlueChampagne · 04/05/2012 16:13

Probably best if you have Greek heritage.

nocluenoclueatall · 05/05/2012 16:04

I once didn't buy a house because I spotted the name "Ptolemy" on a banner in the poor child's bedroom. I thought, "I really couldn't live here, these are just not my people". The house was also bland, unimaginative and a bit damp. Just about summed it up really.

Badgerina · 05/05/2012 18:18

That is one of the wankiest things I've ever heard.

Knew someone who had a cat called Ptolemy and thought it was ridiculous, only thing worse would be to curse a child with it!

tammytoby · 05/05/2012 19:45

Badgerina, what is the wankiest thing - nocluenoclueatall's rejection of a house based on a child's name label or the name itself?

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 05/05/2012 20:15

I have a Ptolemy. Just about to turn 1 and he's lovely . Mainly gets called Tolly. We thought long and hard about it and argued for 3 weeks but I wouldn't change it now. There are plenty of unusual names at nursery so he doesn't stand out. The spelling is no more strange that ones of Irish derivation. He has a "sensible" middle name so if he wants to use that in the future he can do. DS1 is called Milo and everyone thought that was odd when we used it but as he has grown up everyone has got used to it and now it is just his name. The same will happen to Tolly.

TheGrandOldDuke · 05/05/2012 20:18

Good on you spiffy and Tolly is very cute!!

IslaValargeone · 05/05/2012 20:20

I adore unusual names although I can't quite make up my mind, I am leaning towards a bit too pretentious (no wish to offend spiffy at all)
It isn't as try to hard as Araminta, and I don't care who I offend if they've called their child that quite frankly.

suburbandream · 05/05/2012 20:23

I think it's nice for a cat

IslaValargeone · 05/05/2012 20:25

Oh god no, calling your pet something like that is even more pretentious.

Booette · 05/05/2012 20:37

I love it spiffy I've never actually met a Ptolemy!

I love Araminta too, it was in one of my favourite childhood books (Moondial)

nocluenoclueatall · 05/05/2012 20:50

Sorry spiffy I'm sure your Tolly is lovely Blush. It was the house that was a bit crap really, not the name, but I got a bit carried away with the thread...

Note to self: refrain from voicing objectionable opinions on the internet. My grandpa used to say, if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all and I usually follow that. Apologies.

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 05/05/2012 21:10

S'alright noclue. If I took offence easily I wouldn't have called my child Ptolemy Grin.

We might have to work harder on being a pretentious, poncetastic family though. I don't think we quite live up to the image...

Badgerina · 05/05/2012 22:32

spiffy Yay! I bet he really suits it too Smile

P.s the "wanky" thing I was going on about was the rejection of a house based on a name label Grin

Badgerina · 05/05/2012 22:35

I see noclue got carried away. Perhaps me saying "wanky" was a bit carried away too Blush

I am never probably going to name another child, but this is why I hang around in baby names topic quite a lot, you lot are really nice and normal. Grin There is not the AIBU attitude here.

Back to the Ptolomey subject. As much as I am now used to the name (DD was best friends with Ptolemy in nursery for a while) the name does conjure up assumptions. Next year when DD goes to the local school I have already warned her that it is unlikely that Ptolomey will be there. I assume, entirely based on his name, that he will be going to a private school. Unfortunately, it is a name that causes prejudice.
